If the API only captures another format, use its documented export or conversion step instead. These are different workflows, and the provider’s response format, authentication, and parameter names determine which one applies.
What “website screenshot to WebP” can mean
A screenshot API renders a web page in a browser and returns or stores an image of the rendered result. WebP is the image encoding you want at the end. The phrase can describe either of two paths:
- Direct WebP output: ask the screenshot endpoint to return WebP. A successful response may contain raw image bytes with a WebP content type.
- Capture, then convert: capture in a format such as PNG, then send that image to a separate export endpoint or convert it with an image-processing library.
Use the path the chosen provider documents. A screenshot endpoint that returns PNG does not become a WebP endpoint just because you save its response with a .webp filename. Renaming changes the filename, not the encoded image.
What WebP does—and does not—tell you
WebP supports lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency, and animation. The IETF describes it in RFC 9649, published in November 2024; the RFC is informational, not an Internet Standards Track specification. Those capabilities describe the format, not what a screenshot API implements: a page screenshot is generally a still image, and each service determines which encodings and options it exposes.

Do not assume a specific file-size reduction or visual result from the format name alone. Lossy quality settings, if offered, trade image detail for a different encoded result; lossless mode, if offered, preserves the input image data through encoding. Providers do not necessarily expose the same controls or use the word “quality” in the same way.
Choose the right response-handling flow
When the endpoint returns image bytes
Check the HTTP status and Content-Type. If the successful response is image/webp, write the response body directly to a binary file such as page.webp. Do not attempt to parse that success body as JSON. A binary image response is not an error simply because it is not JSON.
When the endpoint returns JSON
Some APIs return a JSON object that contains a hosted image URL rather than the image itself. Parse the documented field, then use that URL as the provider directs—often by making a second request to download the image. Do not treat a JSON response as image bytes or assume the URL field has a standard name.
When a separate export is required
If the screenshot endpoint cannot output WebP, look for a documented conversion or export operation. One documented service workflow captures a PNG and then submits it to an export endpoint with WebP selected. That is a service-specific flow, not a required step for every screenshot API. If there is no suitable export endpoint, a local image-processing library can convert the captured image, provided you can retrieve it and the library supports the needed encoding.

Make a WebP screenshot request
The provider-neutral sequence is simple, but its exact request is not universal. Confirm the API’s endpoint, authentication method, method (such as GET or POST), parameter spelling and accepted values, and response shape in its own documentation before using code from any example.
- Choose an API that documents WebP output, or a documented capture-plus-export workflow. Confirm that WebP applies to the output you need.
- Send the target page URL and select WebP using the provider’s documented format control. Include only the capture options you need.
- Check the result: handle a successful image response as bytes, or parse JSON if the contract says the response contains a URL. Treat non-success status codes according to that API’s error documentation.
- Verify the saved artifact: make sure the response content type and actual file are consistent with WebP. A filename extension alone does not verify the encoding.
Do not combine one provider’s endpoint with another provider’s authentication header, parameter casing, or response-handling code. For example, ScreenshotEngine documents GET query parameters and POST JSON, with case-sensitive names and some differences between GET and POST option names. Capture options that affect the result
Options change what the browser renders before encoding, or how the rendered pixels are encoded. The following are examples exposed by the documented services in this guide’s source material; availability, parameter names, defaults, and valid values vary by API.

Capture conditions matter as much as encoding: a smaller or larger viewport can trigger a different responsive layout, and a capture taken before page content finishes rendering can omit it regardless of output format. Tune the browser capture first, then use a quality control only if the provider documents one.

Authentication, request styles, and limits are provider-specific
The cited screenshot API documentation includes API-key authentication, while Screenshot Studio’s developer portal describes an unauthenticated public API governed by per-IP limits. Neither policy can be generalized to all screenshot services. Check current authentication instructions, quotas, error responses, and any request restrictions for the endpoint you actually use. Never place a secret API key in client-side code or a public page unless the provider explicitly documents a safe mechanism for that use.
Likewise, APIs can offer GET query parameters, POST JSON, or both. Advanced options may be restricted to one method. Parameter casing can matter, and similarly named options can have different accepted values or meanings. Follow a single provider’s current examples from request through response parsing.

The file has a .webp extension but will not open as WebP
Cause: The API returned a different encoding and the response was only renamed. Fix: inspect the successful response’s Content-Type and select a documented WebP output option, or convert the captured image through a documented export step.
Your JSON parser reports an error on a successful response
Cause: The endpoint returned raw image bytes rather than JSON. Fix: branch on status and content type; save an image response as bytes, and parse JSON only when the API contract says the response is JSON.
The request succeeds but the page looks incomplete
Cause: The capture may have started before the relevant content appeared, or the chosen viewport changed the page layout. Fix: use a documented delay or wait strategy, confirm the viewport, and check whether the API supports full-page capture or the specific element you need.

The server rejects an option that works in another example
Cause: Parameter names, capitalization, methods, and accepted values differ by provider and sometimes by request method. Fix: use the same provider’s reference for the endpoint and method in your request; do not transplant options from a different API.
The request is unauthorized or rate-limited
Cause: The service may require a key, the key may be missing or invalid, or its documented quota or per-IP limit may apply. Fix: check that provider’s authentication and error documentation, inspect the status code and response body, and verify current account or rate-limit conditions.
Cost and reliability considerations
A screenshot API’s documentation establishes how that vendor says its endpoint behaves; it is not an independent comparison of image quality, latency, reliability, or service guarantees. The available information here does not establish a best provider on those grounds, nor does it establish comparative pricing. Before building around a service, confirm its current quotas, retention behavior, pricing, and legal terms directly with that provider.
For implementation reliability, handle non-success responses, network failures, and timeouts separately from successful image output. Keep the API key on a server-side component, set a request timeout appropriate to the provider’s documented behavior, and avoid assuming every request produces a downloadable image. Where the API documents billing or cache semantics, account for those explicitly rather than estimating cost from the number of requests alone.

Can a screenshot API make an animated WebP of a web page?
A screenshot is a capture of rendered page content, ordinarily a still image. WebP’s support for animation does not mean a screenshot endpoint records page motion; verify an API’s documented output capabilities if you need animation.
Can I use WebP for an image with transparency?
WebP supports alpha transparency, but whether a screenshot endpoint preserves a transparent background depends on that service’s capture and output options.
