First determine whether the monitor failed to produce the right screenshot or produced an image that differs from its baseline. A missing or wrongly framed image usually points to capture setup; an unexpected visual difference points to page rendering, a stale or mismatched baseline, or changing content. Work through the checks below before changing a comparison threshold or accepting a new baseline.
Identify the failure before changing settings
“Not working” can describe several different problems. Separate them before troubleshooting:
- No screenshot or a failed run: Check the monitor’s run status, configured URL, schedule, credentials, and whether its artifacts are retained. These checks are service-specific; dashboard labels and behavior vary by provider.
- A blank or incomplete image: Check that the page and the content being monitored had time to render before capture.
- The wrong part of the page: Check whether the job is set to capture the viewport, a selected element, or the full page.
- An image exists but comparison fails: Check the baseline, rendering environment, and changing page content before adjusting tolerance.
Playwright’s documentation is useful for understanding browser screenshots and visual assertions, but its behavior should not be assumed to describe an unnamed hosted monitoring service.
Check what the monitor is capturing
Viewport, element, and full-page screenshots are different capture scopes. Confirm that the job uses the scope you intended. Playwright documents these as distinct screenshot choices in its screenshots guide.

- Viewport: Captures the visible browser area. Verify the viewport dimensions and that the target content is inside it.
- Element: Captures a specific page element. Verify the selector identifies the intended element and that it exists when capture runs.
- Full page: Captures the scrollable page rather than only the initial viewport. Check that the monitor is configured for a full-page capture.
For a code-based capture, double-check the requested URL and selector, and verify that the expected content is present before saving the image. A screenshot shows rendered appearance; inspecting page structure or accessibility information can help distinguish missing document content from a capture-framing problem.
Wait for the page and monitored content to settle
A page can respond successfully before all of its visual content has appeared. If a screenshot is blank or incomplete, check when capture occurs and whether the relevant content has finished rendering. For Playwright visual assertions, the documented behavior waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing against the expected image; that can help with settling visuals, but it does not establish that another monitoring service waits the same way. See Playwright’s PageAssertions documentation.

When using browser automation, wait for a meaningful condition—such as the monitored element becoming visible—rather than relying only on a short fixed delay. A delay may be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one. If your hosted service does not expose a wait condition, consult its documentation for the available capture timing options.
Verify the baseline and keep the rendering environment consistent
A visual comparison needs a reference image for the same test. Playwright creates a baseline on the first visual comparison run and compares later runs against it. Confirm that the baseline exists and belongs to the current test, rather than another page, viewport, or test case.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Also compare the environment that made the baseline with the one making the current screenshot. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Its visual comparisons guide recommends using the same environment that generated the baseline. If the environment changed, first reproduce the comparison under consistent conditions to see whether that explains the difference.
Do not update a baseline just to make an unexplained failure disappear. Review the image and confirm that the visual change is intentional; then update the approved reference through your tool’s documented workflow.

Isolate dynamic or personalized page regions
Animations, rotating content, timestamps, personalized modules, advertisements, and other changing regions can produce noisy diffs even when the page is healthy. Identify whether the changed pixels reflect a real regression or ordinary variation. Playwright’s visual comparison guidance supports a custom stylesheet to hide dynamic content during screenshot comparison. Apply hiding or masking narrowly: excluding too much can conceal a genuine layout or content defect.
Adjust comparison tolerance only after diagnosis
Playwright provides comparison options such as maxDiffPixels and a per-pixel color threshold. These can accommodate known rendering noise, but they do not fix a wrong capture scope, a missing baseline, or a page that has not settled. First make the capture and environment consistent, then decide whether the remaining difference is harmless. Record why a tolerance is appropriate for that test so future changes are not silently overlooked.

If you need a direct screenshot capture rather than a browser-monitoring workflow, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

| Symptom | First checks | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| No image or failed run | Service run status, URL, schedule, credentials, artifact retention | Assuming a visual-diff threshold will fix a failed capture |
| Blank or incomplete image | Page readiness, target content visibility, capture timing | Accepting a blank image as a new baseline |
| Wrong region or clipped page | Viewport, element selector, or full-page setting | Changing comparison tolerance before confirming capture scope |
| Unexpected visual diff | Baseline identity, rendering environment, dynamic content | Updating the baseline before reviewing the change |
| Intermittent diffs | Animations, rotating or personalized modules, environment consistency | Broad masking that could hide real defects |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright’s screenshot-waiting behavior apply to every screenshot monitoring service?
No. The documented wait for two consecutive matching captures applies to Playwright visual assertions; other services may use different timing and readiness rules.
Should I regenerate a baseline whenever a visual test fails?
No. Review the screenshot and confirm that the change is intentional before replacing an approved baseline.
