Choose a browser library when your team needs direct control of rendering and test infrastructure; choose a hosted screenshot API when your application should submit a URL and receive an image without managing browsers. Playwright is a practical library for screenshots and visual comparisons. Browserless, ScreenshotOne, and Urlbox document hosted capture APIs with different option sets. The right choice depends on control, repeatability, security, and how much browser operations your team wants to own.
Two ways to capture a website
A screenshot system usually follows one of two architectures:
- Self-hosted browser automation: your code launches and controls a browser, navigates to a page, waits for it to settle, and saves the image. You own browser binaries, runtime isolation, scaling, and environment consistency.
- Hosted screenshot API: your application sends a URL and options to a remote service. The provider runs the browser and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or another documented output. You manage authentication, request handling, and the provider dependency rather than the browser fleet.
These are not interchangeable products. A library exposes browser-level control; an API exposes only the controls its provider implements. Confirm current options, limits, retention, geographic coverage, pricing, and browser versions in each vendor’s live documentation before committing.
Playwright: direct browser control in your environment
Playwright documents browser screenshot capture through its MCP screenshot tools and provides screenshot-based visual comparisons in its test runner. See the screenshot documentation and visual comparison documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Basic capture
The following Node.js example launches Chromium, waits for the page to load, and writes a full-page PNG. Install Playwright first with npm install -D playwright, then install its browser binaries with npx playwright install chromium.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'example.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
networkidle is useful for pages that finish loading their requests, but analytics, chat, advertising, or long polling can prevent a true idle state. For such pages, use a bounded wait for a meaningful selector or a short delay instead of waiting indefinitely.
Element, clipping, and format options
Playwright can capture a locator rather than the entire page, or capture a rectangle. It can also write JPEG output with a quality value.
const card = page.locator('[data-testid="pricing-card"]');
await card.screenshot({ path: 'card.png' });
await page.screenshot({
path: 'hero.jpg',
type: 'jpeg',
quality: 85,
clip: { x: 0, y: 0, width: 1440, height: 700 }
});
For a reliable element capture, wait until the locator is visible and stable. CSS animations, web fonts, lazy images, and layout shifts can otherwise produce different pixels from run to run.
Visual regression comparisons
Playwright’s snapshot assertions compare a new screenshot with a stored baseline:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png', {
fullPage: true,
animations: 'disabled'
});
});
Do not treat a pixel diff as proof that application code changed. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep those conditions stable: pin the browser version, run comparisons in the same container or CI image, use identical viewport and device-scale settings, freeze or disable animations, and control fonts and test data. Review intentional baseline changes rather than increasing a tolerance until real regressions disappear.
When Playwright is the better fit
- Visual regression tests need to run beside your application and test fixtures.
- You need arbitrary JavaScript, authentication flows, network interception, or custom browser contexts.
- Your team can maintain browser binaries, sandboxing, concurrency, and CI images.
- Data must remain inside an environment you control, subject to your own security and retention policies.
Hosted screenshot APIs
A hosted API is often simpler for a product that needs occasional or scheduled captures. Your service sends a request, handles an image response, and retries according to the provider’s documented behavior. The following examples show documented patterns, not a claim that the providers expose identical controls.
Browserless
The Browserless Screenshot API documents a POST /screenshot endpoint with a URL, token authentication, and optional Puppeteer-style screenshot settings. Its documentation describes PNG, JPEG, and WebP output, full-page mode, and selector or clip capture. Check the current request schema before using an option in production.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsScreenshotOne
ScreenshotOne documents a hosted API with GET and POST requests, access-key authentication, language libraries, and multiple capture options. Its getting-started guide explicitly recommends HTTPS: unencrypted HTTP can expose access keys, headers, cookies, and other sensitive request data in transit. Its exact quote is, “Always call the Screenshot API over HTTPS.”
Urlbox
Urlbox’s screenshot documentation describes full-page and element-specific screenshots. Its documented default full-page behavior scrolls first, helping lazy-loaded content appear and helping the service determine the final scrollable height. Verify how that behavior interacts with your page’s scroll handlers and consent flows.

ScreenshotNeo: a hosted API with clean-shot billing
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. It accepts one GET request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is the first hosted API to try when you want clean output, because it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets, and bills only clean shots.
Each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. You can turn individual cleanup steps off when a page requires the original behavior.

Capture options
ScreenshotNeo documents 63 options, including full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size and margins, landscape mode and page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, blocking ads, trackers, requests or resource types, custom headers, cookies, user agent and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can reduce migration changes.
Runnable requests
Get an API key, then replace YOUR_API_KEY. The complete parameter reference is in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const buffer = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', buffer));

Decision framework
| Need | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Visual regression in CI | Playwright | Browser and test code run together, with snapshot assertions and controlled fixtures. |
| Remote rendering without browser operations | Hosted API | Your service submits a URL and processes an image response. |
| Clean images for pages with consent UI | ScreenshotNeo | Consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture. |
| Unusual browser behavior or private test environments | Playwright | Local contexts allow custom scripts, interception, and network access rules. |
| Bulk or asynchronous product captures | Provider with documented jobs or bulk support | Compare each provider’s current limits; ScreenshotNeo supports up to 100 URLs per bulk call and signed webhooks for async jobs. |
Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
Control versus operations
Self-hosting avoids a third-party rendering request, but it makes browser lifecycle, memory use, parallelism, crashes, patching, and CI image maintenance your responsibility. A hosted API removes that browser fleet from your service, but introduces network latency, credentials, provider limits, and dependency on an external endpoint. The available documentation does not establish that one approach is universally faster, cheaper, or more reliable.
Repeatability
For visual tests, pin browser and OS images, viewport, device scale, fonts, locale, timezone, and data. For hosted captures, record the provider, option set, requested URL, response headers, and date so a later diff can be explained. Caching can improve repeatability and latency, but use a short or zero TTL when freshness matters.
Security
Use HTTPS for every API request. Keep access keys in a secret manager, never in client-side JavaScript or public image URLs unless you deliberately use a signed-link feature. Treat cookies, Authorization headers, and private URLs as sensitive; verify the provider’s retention and regional-processing terms before sending them.

The image is blank or incomplete
Confirm the URL is reachable from the execution environment, increase the documented timeout, wait for a meaningful selector, and check whether the page requires authentication or geolocation. For lazy content, scroll or use the provider’s full-page behavior; verify that images are not blocked by a resource policy.

Full-page height is wrong
Wait for late layout changes, fonts, and lazy images. Remove infinite-scroll behavior from the capture path or define a bounded clip. Compare the resulting document height in the same browser version used by the test.
Visual diffs appear on every run
Stabilize OS, browser version, headless mode, hardware or container image, viewport, fonts, timezone, and animation state. Use deterministic test data and disable blinking cursors, rotating carousels, and timestamps.
API authentication or transport fails
Check the key, URL encoding, HTTP method, and current endpoint path. Use HTTPS, inspect the status code and response body, and avoid logging headers that contain cookies or Authorization values. For ScreenshotNeo, inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed to distinguish a clean billed capture from a failed or non-billed result.
Consent UI obscures the page
With Playwright, implement an explicit consent interaction or hide the known selector in your test fixture. With ScreenshotNeo, leave its consent and popup cleanup enabled unless your use case requires the original page state.
A practical rollout plan
- Define the artifact: viewport screenshot, full page, element, PDF, or visual baseline.
- List dynamic content and secrets: authentication, cookies, geolocation, animations, lazy loading, and private endpoints.
- Prototype one representative page in Playwright and one hosted API if outsourcing browser operations is under consideration.
- Record exact options, browser or provider version, output format, and failure behavior.
- Run repeated captures in CI or a staging environment and review diffs, latency, and quota usage.
- Choose the smallest operational surface that still provides the controls and data handling your application requires.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a browser library and a hosted API together?
Yes. Teams commonly keep Playwright for visual regression and use an API for customer-facing or scheduled captures; keep their baselines and rendering assumptions separate.
Should screenshots be stored as build artifacts or committed to source control?
Store the policy that matches your review process. Commit small, intentional baselines when code review benefits from them; use build artifacts or object storage when images are numerous or generated per run.
What should I verify before sending an authenticated page to a provider?
Confirm HTTPS, secret handling, retention, regional processing, access controls, and whether request headers, cookies, and captured images are logged or retained.
