A website screenshot API turns a URL or HTML document into an image or PDF by loading it in a browser on a remote service. Your application sends an authenticated HTTP request with the page and capture settings, then saves or streams the result. For JavaScript-heavy pages, the decisive detail is whether the service runs JavaScript and gives the page enough time to render before capture.
What a website screenshot API does
A screenshot API is a hosted browser-rendering service, not simply an image endpoint that fetches a page’s source. The service opens the supplied URL—or, for some APIs, supplied HTML—in a browser, applies capture options, and returns a file or encoded image. Cloudflare documents HTML and JavaScript processing for its screenshot endpoint; Site-Shot describes its service as running a real Chromium browser with JavaScript execution. Cloudflare Browser Run screenshot documentation · Site-Shot API documentation
This matters because many modern sites construct their visible content after the initial HTML arrives. If the renderer does not execute JavaScript, or the capture happens before client-side rendering finishes, the image may show a loading state, an empty shell, or incomplete content instead of the page a visitor sees.
A typical request includes a target URL, credentials such as an API key or bearer token, and optional rendering parameters. The API returns image bytes or, depending on the provider and response mode, an encoded result or PDF. Your code is responsible for handling errors, choosing where to store the output, and deciding when to retry.

How to choose an API for your page
Start with the page you need to capture and the way the result will be used. A product screenshot, a visual-regression test, a PDF report, and a thumbnail pipeline can have very different requirements. Feature lists alone do not establish which service is fastest or most reliable: the provider documentation cited here does not supply a neutral, cross-vendor reliability benchmark.
Browser and JavaScript fidelity
Check that the service executes JavaScript if your target includes a single-page application, client-rendered content, or dynamic widgets. Then look for controls to wait for a selector, a delay, or another readiness condition. A generic delay may be adequate for a stable page, but a selector-based wait can make the capture depend on the element you actually need.
Capture area and viewport
Confirm whether the API supports the capture shape you need: a fixed viewport, an entire page, a clipped region, or one element selected by CSS. For responsive pages, set viewport width and height explicitly; otherwise changes in defaults or device emulation can change layout and therefore the screenshot.
Element capture is useful when only a chart, card, or receipt is needed. Full-page capture is useful for long documents, but content loaded only during scrolling may require a provider feature that triggers lazy-loaded images or other content before taking the shot.

Formats and downstream use
PNG is generally a practical choice for crisp UI text and graphics; JPEG can suit photographic imagery where smaller files matter, and WebP is another option where downstream systems accept it. Do not assume every endpoint accepts every format. For paginated documents or printable reports, confirm whether PDF output is supported and whether paper size, margins, orientation, and page ranges can be set.
Documented format coverage differs by service. Screenshot API lists PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF; Website Screenshot API documents PNG, JPG, WebP, and PDF, with separate animation endpoints; Site-Shot lists PNG, JPEG, WebP, or JSON/base64 responses. Authentication, workflow, and operations
Read how the provider expects credentials to be sent and keep secrets on a server, not in browser-side code. Cloudflare documents bearer-token API access; specialist services document API-key or user-key workflows. For a single capture, a synchronous request is straightforward. For many URLs or long-running captures, investigate batch or asynchronous options, response timeouts, caching, retention, and retry behavior.
Before adopting a service, establish how it treats failures, whether returned files persist and for how long, what quota applies to your plan, and whether its processing region or data handling meets your requirements. A published feature list is not a substitute for a contractual guarantee or a measured test on your own target pages.

How to make a screenshot request
The general integration pattern is to send an authenticated GET or POST request containing a URL and rendering options, then save or stream the response. Exact parameter names and authentication differ, so use the relevant provider’s current documentation rather than copying a request between vendors unchanged.
- Choose the input. Provide a publicly reachable URL, or HTML if the endpoint explicitly supports HTML input. For Cloudflare’s endpoint, the request requires either a
urlorhtmlfield. - Authenticate. Supply the API key or bearer token using the provider’s required header or parameter. Avoid logging credentials or exposing them in a client application.
- Set rendering options. Specify viewport dimensions, output format, and full-page, clip, or selector behavior as needed. Add a readiness wait for dynamic content.
- Handle the response. Check the HTTP status and provider-specific error details before treating the response as an image. Save binary output as bytes; if the API returns JSON or base64, decode it according to the documented response format.
- Test representative pages. Include a JavaScript-rendered page, a long page, and a page with the relevant responsive layout or authentication needs before relying on the integration in production.

The screenshot is blank or shows a loading shell
The page may depend on JavaScript, or the capture may occur before the important content appears. Confirm that the chosen renderer executes JavaScript, then wait for a meaningful selector or use a documented delay. If the page is blocked by authentication or a bot check, determine whether the service supports the required cookies or headers; do not assume an API can bypass access controls.
Images or content are missing on a long page
Lazy-loaded assets may not exist until the page is scrolled. Use a full-page mode that handles lazy-loaded images if available, or identify the missing content’s loading condition and wait for it. Check whether the page uses cross-origin resources or client-side errors that prevent the content from rendering.
The layout differs from the browser you expected
Set viewport width and height explicitly and check device emulation, scale, timezone, and geolocation where relevant. Responsive breakpoints can substantially alter a page at different widths. Compare the API capture with the same viewport and state, not with an unrelated desktop or mobile browser view.
The request fails or returns an unexpected file
Verify the endpoint, credential placement, target URL encoding, and exact format parameter supported by that service. Check HTTP status and provider error payloads before writing the body to a file with an image extension. For PDF output, use the provider’s PDF-specific options rather than assuming image settings apply unchanged.

Captures are slow or costly at scale
Rendering a browser page requires more work than downloading a static image. Limit capture dimensions and page area to what the task needs, avoid unnecessarily long waits, and use caching when a fresh capture is not required. For large jobs, compare batch or asynchronous workflows and include failed requests and retries in your cost model. Provider documentation describes different quotas and workflows, but it does not establish a neutral latency comparison.
Cost, reliability, and production planning
Compare pricing by billable successful captures and the provider’s definition of success, not by a headline quota alone. A useful estimate starts with captures per day, retries, cache behavior, format or rendering needs, and how often pages must be refreshed. If a vendor specifies retention, establish whether your application must download the result before it expires.
Operationally, record the target URL, capture options, request ID if provided, status, and duration without recording secrets or sensitive page contents. Retry only failures likely to be transient, and use bounded retries with backoff so an unavailable target does not create a request storm. Where correctness matters, keep a small set of representative URLs and inspect image dimensions and content as part of integration testing.
Cloudflare documentation was last updated September 26, 2026. Website Screenshot API’s documentation lists 100 free screenshots per month and gives an example response describing 24-hour retention; both are plan or service details that should be rechecked directly before purchase. No cross-vendor reliability figure is established by these provider materials.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot API capture a page that requires JavaScript?
Yes, if the service renders the page in a JavaScript-capable browser and you allow time or use a readiness condition for its dynamic content. Confirm this in the endpoint documentation for the specific service.
Can I capture only one element instead of the whole page?
Some APIs support CSS-selector element capture. Confirm that the endpoint you use offers selector capture and how it behaves when the selector is absent.
Does every website screenshot API return a PDF?
No. Output formats vary by provider and endpoint; verify PDF support and its print settings before building a workflow around it.
