That is a recommendation, not a command: Google and social networks select and crop previews automatically, so no metadata can guarantee that one exact image will appear everywhere.
What a website preview image actually is
A website preview image is the picture a search engine or link-sharing service displays to represent a page. People may call it a “website thumbnail,” but the image is normally chosen from signals on the page rather than uploaded into one universal thumbnail field.
Google Search Central states: “Google’s selection of an image preview is completely automated and takes into account a number of different sources to select which image on a given page is shown on Google (for example, a text result image or the preview image in Discover).” Google may use an Open Graph image or an image declared in structured data as a signal. The platform still makes the final selection and rendering decision.
That distinction explains why a correctly written tag can still produce a different crop, a different image, or no image in a particular result. Treat metadata as a strong suggestion and design the source image so it remains useful when a platform changes its crop.

Choose the image before you write the metadata
Make it specific to the page
Use an image that represents the article, product, report, or landing page being shared. A generic site logo gives a platform little context and is specifically discouraged by Google’s image guidance. A page-specific variation helps a reader distinguish one result from another.
Use a sensible shape and a crop-safe layout
Platforms do not all display the same aspect ratio. Keep the subject, headline, and important branding away from the extreme edges so a square or narrow crop does not remove the meaning. Avoid panoramas or extremely tall artwork unless the destination is known to preserve that shape.
For Facebook link shares, Adobe’s undated guidance recommends 1200 × 630 pixels, approximately a 1.91:1 ratio. Treat that as Facebook-specific guidance, accessed September 29, 2026, rather than a universal requirement for search or every social service. Adobe also cautions that visible cropping can vary by device.
Keep text readable at small sizes
- Use one clear subject and a short, high-contrast title.
- Leave a safe margin around faces, logos, and text.
- Do not put information only in the far left or right edge, where a crop may remove it.
- Export a high-resolution file in a format accepted by your publishing system, then check it at the small size used in feeds and search results.
Create a page-specific preview image
Build a repeatable design
- Write down the page’s single promise or subject.
- Select one relevant photograph, illustration, chart, or product view.
- Add a short title that still makes sense without the page’s headline.
- Apply the same typography and color system used by your site, but vary the central image or title for each page.
- Export a version that meets the destination’s recommended dimensions and inspect it in both a wide and a narrow crop.
You can create the artwork yourself, use reusable templates, hire a designer, or use a design application such as Adobe Express. Compare tools by whether they let you control dimensions, protect a crop-safe area, make page-specific variants, and export a high-resolution result. A template is useful only if it preserves those controls; a repeated logo-only card is not a substitute for relevant artwork.

Add Open Graph and structured-data signals
Place the Open Graph image in the document head
Add an absolute, publicly reachable image URL to the page’s <head>. The other tags give a sharing service useful context, while og:image identifies the preferred image.

</head>Generate a distinct value for each canonical page. Do not point every article to the home-page logo merely because the tag is present. Make sure the image URL does not require a login or a browser interaction that a crawler cannot perform.
Declare the image in existing structured data
If the page already uses schema.org structured data, add the same page-specific image URL to the appropriate image property for its type, such as an Article or product entity. Google documents both Open Graph and structured-data image properties as signals. Keeping the URLs consistent reduces ambiguity, but neither method forces a particular result.
Write useful alt text and preserve image rights
Alt text is for the page, not the share card
Write concise, contextual alt text for images that appear in the page content. Describe what the image communicates to someone who cannot see it, rather than listing search keywords. Google says alt text helps it understand an image and improves accessibility for screen-reader users. For example, “Dashboard showing a week of checkout failures by browser” is more useful than “checkout errors image website thumbnail.”

The Open Graph tag does not replace HTML alt text. A social crawler may read the metadata while an assistive technology user encounters the image in the article itself; serve both audiences deliberately.
Record creator, credit, copyright, and license information
Keep permission and attribution details with the asset. Google documents structured-data and IPTC fields for creator, credit, copyright, and licensing information. These fields help communicate provenance, but Google does not guarantee that the metadata will be displayed in search results. A metadata field is not a license: publish only artwork you have permission to use.
Inspect the result before publishing
Check the page source
- Open the rendered page and view its HTML source, not only a client-side preview in your CMS.
- Confirm that the intended
og:imageappears once with the correct URL. - Open that URL directly in a private browser window and verify that it returns the intended image without authentication.
- Check that the image still communicates its subject when the sides or top and bottom are cropped.
Use a preview checker, but treat it as a simulation
OpenGraph.io describes a checker that inspects Open Graph tags and shows simulated previews across platforms. Such a tool is useful for finding a missing tag, malformed URL, or unexpected title. A simulation is not proof that every live service will render the same result; the real platform may recrawl later, choose another source, or apply a different crop.
Troubleshoot the common failures
The share card has no image
- Confirm that
og:imageis in the initial HTML head and not added only after a browser-side script runs. - Check the image URL directly without a session cookie or login.
- Look for a typo, redirect loop, blocked request, or a page-level security rule that prevents crawlers from fetching the file.
- Run the URL through a metadata checker and then allow the destination service to recrawl the page.
A logo or unrelated photograph appears
Remove competing generic images from the head and make the page-specific image the clear Open Graph and structured-data signal. Google’s selection remains automated, so a corrected tag is a recommendation rather than a guarantee.

The right image is cropped badly
Recompose the source with a central subject and wider safe margins. Keep essential words away from the edges, and make a variant for a platform whose crop is known to be substantially different. Do not assume that the Facebook recommendation is a universal canvas.
Alt text is present but unhelpful
Replace keyword strings with a short description of the image’s meaning. If an image is purely decorative and conveys no information, use the accessibility pattern appropriate to your HTML rather than stuffing it with search terms.
Rights or credit are unclear
Pause publication until the creator, license, and required attribution are documented. Add creator, credit, copyright, and license fields where your structured data or asset workflow supports them, while remembering that search results may not display those fields.

- The image is specific to this page, high-resolution, and composed for more than one crop.
