Set up monitoring alerts by checking your public production URL over HTTPS from more than one region, then alerting only after a sustained failure, high-latency window, or approaching certificate expiry. Start with a baseline, route notifications to the channel your responders actually watch, and test the complete notification path before relying on it.
What website monitoring alerts check
An uptime monitor periodically sends a probe to an endpoint and records whether it is reachable, what HTTP status it returns, how long it takes to respond, and whether its TLS certificate is healthy. For a normal public website, an HTTPS check is the best starting point because it tests reachability and exposes certificate problems at the same time.
Basic uptime checks are not full browser tests. Google Cloud’s documented uptime checks follow redirects and evaluate the final response, but do not load page assets or execute JavaScript by default. A page can therefore pass an HTTP check while a JavaScript checkout, image, API call, or client-side login is broken. Use transaction or browser monitoring when the requirement is a complete user journey.
Set up your first check
1. Choose a production endpoint
Use the canonical, publicly reachable URL that customers depend on, such as https://www.example.com/ or a health endpoint designed for monitoring. Do not begin with a staging URL, an admin page, or a URL that requires a browser session unless your monitoring service supports the required authentication.

HTTPS checks should normally treat successful 2xx responses as healthy. DigitalOcean’s HTTPS guidance treats responses outside the 200–299 range as outages. Decide separately whether a redirect is acceptable; services that follow redirects generally assess the final response, so monitor the final canonical URL when redirect behavior itself matters.
2. Select the check type
- HTTP or HTTPS: Reachability, status code, response time, and (on supported services) response content and certificate health.
- Ping: Basic network reachability, useful for hosts but insufficient for proving that a web server returns the right page.
- API, DNS, transaction, or page-speed checks: Use these when availability depends on an API response, name resolution, a multi-step workflow, or browser performance.
3. Configure request details
Set the method, expected status or body text, timeout, and any required headers. Authentication is provider-specific. Google Cloud documents Basic Authentication and service-agent authentication options for HTTPS checks, with configuration constraints; do not put credentials in a URL or body unless the provider explicitly protects them.
4. Pick monitoring regions
Choose locations that reflect your users and infrastructure. A check from one region cannot distinguish a global outage from a routing or provider problem affecting only that region. DigitalOcean documents Asia East, Europe, USA East, and USA West, plus regional latency graphs and a global metric. Google Cloud can require failures from multiple regions before opening an alert.
Create the three baseline alerts
Downtime alert
Notify when the endpoint cannot be reached or returns an unhealthy status for a sustained period. Configure a failure duration, retry count, or multi-probe agreement rather than paging on the first failed request. Google Cloud’s documented default policy notifies when at least two regions report failures for at least one minute, and its duration can be changed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLatency alert
Alert when response time remains above a threshold for a defined window. First collect a baseline during normal traffic, then set a threshold that represents user impact for this endpoint. There is no universal latency number in the referenced provider guides: a static page, API, and checkout step have different tolerances. Use a warning route for degradation and reserve urgent escalation for sustained, severe impact.
SSL certificate-expiry alert
Set a warning window for the certificate’s expiration date and make sure the monitor validates the certificate name and chain. DigitalOcean documents an SSL-expiry alert with a configurable expiry window. Google Cloud documents failures for expired, self-signed, or hostname-mismatched certificates. Alert early enough to cover certificate-authority delays, deployment approval, and rollback.

Reduce false alerts without hiding outages
Use retries and duration
A single failed probe can be a transient network event. Configure retries and require the condition to persist for a period that matches the damage a real outage would cause. Uptime.com documents both retry settings and “sensitivity,” the number of probe servers that must report an outage.
Require agreement across probes or regions
For a globally important site, require more than one region to fail before paging. Keep regional alerts or dashboards so a single-region path problem is still visible without waking the global on-call engineer.

Send latency warnings to email or a team chat. Route sustained downtime and imminent certificate expiry to the incident channel or paging system. DigitalOcean documents email and Slack; Uptime.com documents email, SMS, voice calls, and third-party push providers; Google Cloud uses notification channels configured in its monitoring system.
Exclude expected maintenance carefully
If your provider supports maintenance windows, suppress notifications only for a documented deployment interval and keep the check running where possible. A broad permanent mute can conceal an incident that begins during the window.
Notification channels and ownership
Every alert should identify the service owner, URL, severity, observed region, threshold, and a link to the runbook. Email is easy to start with but can be missed in a busy inbox. Slack or another team channel gives shared visibility. SMS or voice is appropriate for a genuinely urgent, sustained outage, not for every latency fluctuation.
Assign one owner for the check and one backup. Record who can renew the certificate, change DNS, roll back the last deployment, and contact the hosting provider. Without ownership, a technically correct alert still fails operationally.

Verify that alerts work
- Save the check and confirm that the provider shows a healthy baseline from the selected regions.
- Use the provider’s built-in test or verification control. Google Cloud includes a test step while creating an uptime check.
- Confirm delivery to every intended recipient and verify that the message identifies the correct URL and severity.
- Run a controlled failure in a non-production endpoint, or temporarily use a test URL that returns an unhealthy status. Do not deliberately break a customer-facing service.
- Write a short runbook: expected status, owner, first diagnostics, rollback action, and escalation contact.
Diagnose a firing alert
Check whether the failure is global
Compare regions first. If only one probe location fails, investigate routing, a regional firewall, DNS propagation, or a provider path issue before declaring a worldwide outage. If several regions fail with the same status, inspect the origin, load balancer, deployment, and DNS records.
Check the final response
Follow redirects manually and inspect the final status code, headers, and body. A redirect loop, authentication challenge, maintenance page, or application error can look different from a connection failure. Remember that a basic check may not load the assets or JavaScript that users see.
Check TLS separately
For certificate alerts, verify expiration, hostname, intermediate certificates, and whether every load-balanced edge serves the new certificate. A certificate can be valid on one node and stale on another.
Check monitor configuration
Confirm the URL, method, expected status, timeout, authentication, user agent, and selected regions. A recently changed firewall or bot-control rule may block monitoring probes while allowing normal browsers.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Short intervals provide faster detection but create more probe traffic and more opportunities for transient failures. Match the interval and alert duration to your recovery objective. Critical checkout or authentication endpoints deserve tighter observation than a rarely visited brochure page.
Use a lightweight health endpoint when the homepage performs expensive rendering. Make that endpoint prove the dependencies you actually need; a health check that always returns 200 without testing its database can create false confidence.

When screenshots help—and when they do not
Uptime alerts tell you that an endpoint responded; a screenshot can show what a visitor actually saw. Use visual capture for incident evidence, landing-page checks, or a browser-rendered page whose failure is not visible in the HTTP status. It does not replace uptime, certificate, or API monitoring, and it cannot prove that every interactive step works.
Or skip the browser setup:
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, with options for full-page capture, lazy-loaded images, CSS selectors, dark mode, device presets, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, geolocation, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, and more. Its consent step accepts cookie banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled.
Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

FAQ
How do I get notified when my website goes down?
Create an HTTP or HTTPS check for the production URL, choose representative regions, set a sustained-failure condition, and connect email, chat, or paging notifications. Test delivery before depending on it.
What is the best way to monitor uptime and SSL expiry?
Use an HTTPS check with certificate validation, a separate expiry window, and retries or multi-region agreement. Add transaction monitoring if availability depends on browser actions.
Should I use email, Slack, or SMS?
Use email for routine notices, Slack or a team channel for shared triage, and SMS or voice only for sustained incidents that require immediate action.
Can a screenshot monitor replace an uptime monitor?
No. A screenshot shows rendered output, while uptime monitoring measures reachability, status, latency, and certificate health. They answer different operational questions.
