The fastest way to optimize website images is to send no more pixels or bytes than a visitor needs. Resize sources to their rendered dimensions, compress them at a visually acceptable quality, serve modern formats with fallbacks, and use responsive markup so each device receives an appropriate file. Reserve eager loading for the critical above-the-fold image, lazy-load images below it, reserve layout space with intrinsic dimensions, and verify the result with Core Web Vitals—especially Largest Contentful Paint (LCP).
Why image optimization matters
Images are often the heaviest and most prevalent resource on a web page. A single oversized hero image can add more transfer time than the rest of the HTML and CSS combined, particularly on mobile networks. Image optimization improves loading speed, reduces bandwidth and hosting costs, and can make pages easier to use on slower devices.
Google’s good LCP target is within 2.5 seconds of navigation starting. Image work cannot guarantee that result—server response, fonts, scripts and layout also matter—but the LCP image is frequently the most important asset to fix first.
A practical image-optimization workflow
1. Inventory the largest and most important images
Run the page through PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse, then inspect the browser’s Network panel sorted by transferred size. Identify:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- the LCP or above-the-fold image;
- large files that are rendered in small slots;
- duplicate variants downloaded for different breakpoints;
- off-screen images that load before they are needed.
Measure representative pages, not just the home page. Product listings, articles, galleries and landing pages often have different image problems.
2. Resize to the largest rendered width
Do not send a 3,000-pixel master to a 320-pixel mobile slot. Create a candidate no wider than the largest size the design actually displays, allowing for high-density screens. If a card is 360 CSS pixels wide and may display at 2× density, a 720-pixel candidate is usually more appropriate than a 4,000-pixel original.
Keep the original source for future edits, but generate delivery files for real layout widths. A typical set might be 320, 640, 960, 1,280 and 1,920 pixels; the correct set depends on your breakpoints and content.
3. Choose a format by content
| Format | Best use | Important considerations |
|---|---|---|
| AVIF | Photographs and graphics where very small files justify extra processing | Can compress very efficiently and supports HDR/WCG; check browser support and encoding/decoding cost. |
| WebP | Photos, illustrations, transparency and many general-purpose images | Broad support; supports lossy, lossless and alpha transparency. |
| JPEG | Photographs and legacy fallback delivery | Widely supported and often practical when modern formats are unavailable. |
| PNG | Images needing lossless detail, sharp text, line art or transparency | Can be much larger than lossy formats for photographs. |
| SVG | Logos, icons and other suitable vector artwork | Scales cleanly; do not use it as a substitute for photographic formats. |
There is no universal “best” format. Compare files at the visual quality your readers need, and retain fallbacks when browser or platform support requires them.
4. Compress with a quality target
Lossy compression is usually effective for photographs because it removes detail people rarely notice. Lossless compression is preferable for exact pixels, screenshots containing small text, diagrams and line art. Quality numbers are encoder-specific, so inspect faces, text, gradients, foliage and fine edges at actual display size.
Squoosh is useful for browser-based conversion and visual comparison. ImageOptim provides a desktop workflow. Keep an uncompressed master and document the settings used to create delivery assets.

5. Generate responsive candidates
Use srcset to list intrinsic widths and sizes to describe the rendered slot. The browser can then choose an appropriate file for viewport width and device density:
<img
src="/images/article-960.webp"
srcset="/images/article-320.webp 320w,
/images/article-640.webp 640w,
/images/article-960.webp 960w,
/images/article-1280.webp 1280w"
sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw,
(max-width: 1100px) 80vw,
960px"
width="960"
height="640"
alt="A team reviewing a design on a laptop"
>
The sizes value must reflect the actual CSS layout. If it says an image is 50vw when it occupies 100vw, browsers may select a file that is too small and blur it. If it says 100vw when the image is a narrow card, visitors download unnecessary bytes.

For art direction—such as a tightly cropped mobile hero—use <picture> with media conditions. For format negotiation, provide modern sources and a fallback:
<picture>
<source type="image/avif" srcset="/hero-640.avif 640w, /hero-1280.avif 1280w" sizes="100vw">
<source type="image/webp" srcset="/hero-640.webp 640w, /hero-1280.webp 1280w" sizes="100vw">
<img src="/hero-1280.jpg" width="1280" height="720" alt="...">
</picture>
6. Prevent layout shifts
Include accurate width and height attributes, or reserve an equivalent aspect ratio in CSS. The browser can allocate space before the file arrives, preventing text and controls from jumping as images decode.
7. Load images according to priority
Images below the initial viewport should normally use loading="lazy". Do not lazy-load the principal above-the-fold image when it is the LCP candidate; doing so can delay its discovery. Use eager loading sparingly and avoid competing high-priority images.
<img src="/hero.webp" width="1280" height="720" alt="..." fetchpriority="high">
<img src="/story-card.webp" width="640" height="426" loading="eager" alt="...">
Lazy loading is not a substitute for responsive sizing. A lazy-loaded image that is several megabytes still costs those bytes when the reader reaches it.

Manual compression and delivery checklist
- Record the image’s rendered width, height and aspect ratio at each breakpoint.
- Export candidates around the largest real slots, including a high-density option where needed.
- Try WebP and, where support and encoding costs are acceptable, AVIF.
- Keep JPEG or PNG fallbacks for compatibility and image-specific requirements.
- Compare quality at 100% and at the actual CSS display size.
- Add
srcset, an accuratesizesexpression, intrinsic dimensions and descriptive alternative text. - Lazy-load below-the-fold images; prioritize only the genuinely critical image.
- Deploy, then retest LCP, total image bytes, request count and layout stability on mobile and desktop.
When an image CDN is worthwhile
Manual variants work well for a small site. A managed image service becomes useful when you have many assets, multiple breakpoints, frequent uploads or a need to negotiate formats automatically. Cloudflare documents automatic compression, WebP/AVIF conversion, on-the-fly resizing, responsive delivery and lazy loading.
Before adopting a service, verify transformation limits, cache behavior, quality controls, URL syntax, origin protection and current pricing. A CDN does not fix incorrect dimensions or poor sizes values automatically; inspect the generated requests and confirm the browser receives the intended width.
Performance, reliability and cost considerations
Encoding and decoding
More efficient formats can require more CPU to encode or decode. For high-volume publishing, measure build time and device behavior as well as transfer size. A slightly larger WebP may be a better operational choice than an expensive AVIF pipeline for a low-traffic page.
Caching
Give generated files stable, versioned URLs and long-lived cache headers. When an image changes, change its filename or URL so stale edge and browser caches cannot serve the old bytes. Confirm that query-based transformations produce cacheable responses.
Quality and accessibility
Do not compress away text that must be read, meaningful facial detail or information conveyed by an image. Write useful alt text for informative images and empty alt text for decorative ones. Captions and surrounding text should carry context that cannot be recovered from pixels.
Troubleshooting common failures
The page is still slow after converting to WebP
Check dimensions first. A 2,000-pixel WebP can still be far larger than a 640-pixel JPEG. Inspect the LCP request, server response time, render-blocking resources and whether the browser selected the intended srcset candidate.

The browser downloads the largest candidate everywhere
An inaccurate or missing sizes attribute is the usual cause. Describe the image’s CSS width at each breakpoint, then verify the selected request in DevTools with device emulation and different DPR values.
Images look blurry on phones
Provide a candidate large enough for the rendered CSS width multiplied by device pixel ratio, without sending the desktop master to every device. Check that a CDN or build step has not capped the requested width.
Images jump while loading
Add correct intrinsic dimensions or an aspect-ratio reservation. Also check that responsive candidates share the same intended ratio unless art direction deliberately changes the crop.
AVIF is missing or fails on a device
Retain a WebP and/or JPEG/PNG fallback in <picture>, and test the complete chain in browsers and embedded web views your audience uses.
Lazy loading hurts the hero image
Remove loading="lazy" from the LCP candidate and avoid delaying its discovery behind client-side code. Lazy-load only images that begin outside the initial viewport.
Or skip the browser setup
