The best website header image is the one that clarifies the page, leaves a reliable area for live HTML text, and still works when the layout narrows or a visitor zooms in. Choose the visual from the page purpose first, then test its crop, contrast, loading behavior, and alternative text at the actual breakpoints your site uses.

What counts as a website header image?

“Header image” can mean several related patterns:

  • Hero image: a prominent, often full-width visual near the top of a page, usually paired with a heading and call to action. The National Science Foundation describes hero components as full-width images that help set a site’s tone.
  • Banner: a shallower strip used to announce a section, campaign, or status.
  • Background image: a visual placed behind content through CSS. It may be decorative or may carry information that users need.
  • Image header: a graphic that includes the heading itself. This is usually the least maintainable option because text inside a bitmap cannot reflow, resize, translate, or be selected like webpage text.

The recommendations below focus on hero and banner treatments, while keeping the heading, supporting copy, and buttons as normal HTML whenever possible.

Choose the image by page purpose

Start with the message and main action, not with a visually impressive photograph. A useful header makes the subject recognizable and gives the first action enough attention.

Page type Header idea Composition guidance Accessibility decision
Product or service Product in use, a meaningful interface detail, or a restrained environment shot Reserve uncluttered space for a short heading and action. Keep the product’s important edge or control out of likely crop zones. If the image explains the product, describe that contribution. If it merely establishes mood and nearby text says the same thing, it can be decorative.
Portfolio or agency One representative project detail or a carefully selected work montage Use one focal project rather than a collage of tiny, unreadable examples. Keep key work away from the area where mobile text will appear. Describe the project detail that matters to the page; do not list every color or background object.
Editorial or nonprofit Contextual documentary photograph tied to the story or cause Choose a scene that adds context without competing with the headline. Check that a narrow crop does not remove the people or object that makes the image meaningful. Provide a concise description when the photograph adds information. Use an empty alternative when it is only atmosphere and the text already conveys the point.
Software or abstract product Simple illustration, diagram-like shape, or cropped interface detail Prefer a quiet visual field with predictable contrast. Do not put a feature claim, price, or instruction only inside the artwork. Describe an informative illustration; mark a purely decorative flourish as decorative.

These are design ideas, not claims that one style universally improves conversion or engagement. Compare candidates on message fit, text legibility, responsive crop, accessibility role, and content maintainability.

Design the composition for cropping

There is no universal “website header pixel size.” A header is rendered inside a particular layout, device pixel ratio, and content-management system. Instead, create a source image large enough for the largest display you support, then define how it behaves at each breakpoint.

Protect the focal subject

  • Identify the subject that must remain visible: a person’s face, a product, a location, or a diagram.
  • Keep that subject away from the edges that may be clipped by an object-fit: cover crop.
  • Leave intentional negative space where the heading will sit. Do not rely on a random dark patch appearing behind text.
  • Prepare an alternate crop or alternate image when the desktop composition cannot survive a narrow layout.

Test real viewport states

Check the rendered header at your desktop and mobile breakpoints, an intermediate tablet width, and a zoomed view. W3C WAI guidance treats viewport changes and changes to the presentation of main elements as design requirements, not optional polish. Confirm that the focal subject, heading, button, and navigation remain visible without horizontal scrolling.

Choose a fitting implementation

  • Use a normal <img> when the image conveys information. Supply dimensions or an aspect-ratio rule to reduce layout shift.
  • Use a CSS background when the image is decorative and content should remain independent of it. Make sure an equivalent text alternative is available if the visual carries meaning.
  • Use a responsive <picture> source when a mobile-specific crop materially improves the composition.

Make text readable over a hero image

Text over photography must remain readable against the pixels behind it at every crop. W3C contrast guidance addresses text on images and the use of background gradients; an attractive desktop overlay is not proof that the mobile crop is accessible.

Use the WCAG contrast thresholds

WCAG 2.0 Success Criterion 1.4.3 specifies a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text, subject to the criterion’s exceptions. Treat these as requirements to verify, not as a visual guess.

Practical treatments

  • Add a solid or translucent panel behind the heading when the photo has unpredictable detail.
  • Apply a gradient that is strongest beneath the text, then verify the actual rendered pixels rather than assuming the gradient is sufficient.
  • Move the heading outside the image on mobile if the crop creates busy or low-contrast backgrounds.
  • Shorten the overlaid heading. Put supporting details and the primary call to action in live content below or beside the image.
  • Do not place essential words, prices, dates, or instructions only in the bitmap. W3C tutorial guidance recommends avoiding text in images except for logos; NSF likewise flags non-decorative text in hero images as an accessibility issue.

Example structure

<section class="hero">
  <img src="/images/team-at-work.webp" alt="">
  <div class="hero__content">
    <p class="eyebrow">Analytics for small teams</p>
    <h1>See which work moves your business forward</h1>
    <a class="button" href="/demo">Book a demo</a>
  </div>
</section>

In this example the image is atmospheric and the adjacent HTML supplies the message, so an empty alternative is appropriate. If the photograph itself communicates an important fact, replace the empty value with a concise equivalent.

Write the right alternative text

W3C WAI’s Images Tutorial states: “Images must have text alternatives that describe the information or function represented by them.” The correct wording depends on the image’s role, not on how prominent it looks.

Informative hero

Briefly state the relevant information: alt="Technician inspecting a solar panel on a commercial roof". Omit decorative details that do not affect the page’s meaning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decorative background

Use an empty alternative (alt="") for an image that adds atmosphere while the nearby heading and copy provide the complete message. Do not repeat the heading in the alternative.

Linked or button image

Name the destination or action, such as alt="View the 2026 project portfolio". The function matters more than a visual inventory.

Logo

Use the organization or product name as the alternative when the logo is the link or identifies the site. Text in a logo is an allowed exception to the general advice against baking copy into images.

Header ideas you can adapt

Product-in-context split hero

Place a short value statement and button in one column and a product-in-use image in the other. On mobile, stack the text before the image if the action is the priority. This avoids placing every word over unpredictable photographic detail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Documentary story banner

Use a contextual image across the top of an article, with the headline in a solid content panel below or beside it. This preserves the subject when a narrow crop removes the original focal point.

Implementation checklist

  1. Write the page’s one-sentence purpose and identify the primary action.
  2. Select an image whose subject supports that purpose rather than merely filling space.
  3. Mark the focal point and define a desktop and narrow-screen crop.
  4. Keep the heading, body copy, and button as editable HTML.
  5. Render the header at each breakpoint, with browser zoom increased, and inspect the actual crop.
  6. Measure text contrast over the rendered image; meet 4.5:1 for normal text or 3:1 for large text under WCAG 2.0 Success Criterion 1.4.3.
  7. Assign the alternative according to role: informative description, empty decorative alternative, or function-focused control label.
  8. Set intrinsic dimensions or an aspect ratio, compress an appropriate modern format, and check the page’s loading experience on a slower connection.
  9. Test keyboard focus, visible button states, and whether overlays obscure navigation or consent controls.

Common header problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Headline disappears on phones Desktop crop or fixed positioning was reused at a narrow width Change the focal position, supply a mobile source, or move text outside the image.

Performance, reliability, and cost decisions

Performance

Large photographic heroes can dominate transfer size. Export a correctly cropped modern image, avoid shipping desktop pixels to a small phone when a responsive source will do, and reserve layout space before loading. Lazy-load below-the-fold banners; a first-viewport hero normally deserves a deliberate loading priority instead of indiscriminate lazy loading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reliability

Assume images can fail, be blocked, or load slowly. The page’s purpose and action must remain understandable without the visual. Test consent overlays, animated content, delayed fonts, and client-rendered headers in the environment used for your screenshots or monitoring.

Cost and maintainability

Keep source images, crops, and focal-point rules documented in the content system. A single editable HTML heading is cheaper to translate and update than several text-baked image variants. If automated captures are part of a build or QA pipeline, caching with an intentional TTL and bulk capture can reduce repeated work; validate that the cached version is acceptable for the page’s update frequency.

Frequently asked questions

Should a header always be full width?

No. Full width is one hero treatment, not a requirement. A split layout, contained banner, or text-first header may preserve the message better, especially on narrow screens.

Can I use a video instead of a header image?

You can, but the same principles apply: the page must work with the motion paused or unavailable, text must remain readable, and meaningful visual information needs an equivalent accessible description. A still image is often the more robust fallback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much text belongs in a hero?

Only what a visitor needs to understand the page and choose the next action. Put qualifications, proof, and detailed explanation in normal content below the hero instead of shrinking the overlay until it becomes hard to read.

Is an empty alt attribute the same as omitting alt?

No. alt="" explicitly marks an image as decorative for assistive technology. Omitting the attribute can cause a screen reader to announce the filename or other unhelpful substitute.
