Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Choose the tool by the copy you need: SingleFile is the direct fit for saving one page and its resources as a portable HTML file; ArchiveBox is better suited to a self-hosted collection with multiple capture formats and recurring imports. Neither format guarantees a perfect replay of every dynamic or authenticated page, so test important sites and retain more than one representation when preservation matters.
Choose the output before choosing the tool
“Save this page” can mean several different things. A self-contained HTML file is convenient for reading or sharing one page offline. A screenshot or PDF records how a page looked at a moment in time. A collection archive can keep multiple representations, metadata, and a repeatable import history.
| Need | Best match from these tools | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| One portable offline HTML copy | SingleFile | One HTML file that can include page resources such as images, stylesheets, fonts, and frames. |
| A growing, self-hosted collection | ArchiveBox | A per-URL snapshot folder with multiple documented capture artifacts and collection-management options. |
| A visual record without browser-extension setup | ScreenshotNeo | A screenshot or PDF returned by an API; it is not a replacement for an HTML archive. |
SingleFile’s project documentation describes browser extensions for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari, as well as a command-line interface for Windows, macOS, and Linux. ArchiveBox documents CLI, REST API, browser extension, web interface, and Python API access. These tools solve related but different problems: a one-file page copy is not the same as a managed archive of many URLs.
Save one page as a single HTML file with SingleFile
SingleFile is the straightforward choice when the goal is to open a saved page later without keeping a separate folder of assets. Its documented capture gathers resources including images, stylesheets, fonts, and frames into one HTML file. The resulting file can be stored, shared, and opened offline in a browser.

Browser-extension workflow
- Install the SingleFile extension for a supported browser: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari.
- Open the page you want to preserve and let its visible content finish loading.
- Use the extension to save the current page. For pages that load images or iframes lazily, enable SingleFile’s documented option to load deferred images and frames before saving.
- Choose a destination and keep the resulting HTML file. Open that file offline in a browser to check that the important content appears as expected.
Exact menu labels and extension behavior may differ by browser and extension version; consult the current SingleFile project documentation for the version you install. SingleFile also documents batch-saving URLs and destinations including GitHub, Amazon S3, Google Drive, and WebDAV.
Command-line and repeat use
SingleFile CLI is the project’s route for command-line capture on Windows, macOS, and Linux, avoiding the need to trigger the browser extension manually for every capture. The project documentation describes the capability, but the supplied product information does not establish current installation commands, package names, flags, or version-specific syntax. Use the official CLI documentation for those exact commands rather than copying an unverified example into an automation job.
For batch work, test a small set of representative URLs first. Pages with delayed media or frames can take longer than a static page, and a saved HTML document should be checked for the specific content you need—not merely for successful file creation.
Build a self-hosted collection with ArchiveBox
ArchiveBox is aimed at collecting and organizing URLs rather than producing only one portable page file. Its documentation describes a self-hosted application with CLI, REST API, browser extension, web interface, and Python API access. It accepts URLs and supports scheduled imports, which makes it relevant when pages need to be captured repeatedly or gathered from browser activity.

What a snapshot can contain
ArchiveBox documents a snapshot folder for each added URL and an index, page metadata, SingleFile output, wget clone, headless-Chrome PDF, screenshot and DOM output, article text, and WARC output. Extracted media or source code may also be present when available. Not every representation is interchangeable: use a PDF or screenshot for a visual record, a single-file output for convenient offline reading, and metadata-rich or WARC output when the collection workflow calls for those forms.
Ways to add pages
- CLI or API: useful for scripted imports and repeatable pipelines.
- Scheduled imports: useful for recurring capture workflows.
- Browser extension: submits pages or URLs to an ArchiveBox server; its documented use depends on an accessible instance and API-key configuration.
- Web interface or Python API: additional documented access routes for managing the collection or integrating it with a Python workflow.
The ArchiveBox browser extension also describes saving the current page, importing browser history and bookmarks, and configuring local screenshots and MHTML copies. Its documentation says local capture artifacts are held in extension-local storage and are removed after 30 days by default unless that behavior is changed. That local extension storage behavior is distinct from a durable collection stored by an ArchiveBox server.
Understand HTML, screenshots, PDFs, and WARC
Single HTML is portable, not a full browser session
A self-contained HTML copy is handy for reading and sharing. SingleFile can include many page resources and can load deferred images and iframes before saving. That does not establish that every interactive behavior, server-only response, or content revealed only after later user interaction will be preserved.
ArchiveBox keeps multiple representations
Keeping several outputs can help when one representation is insufficient: for example, a single-file page for reading, a screenshot for appearance, and metadata or WARC for an archive workflow. More outputs also mean more stored material to manage. ArchiveBox describes storage in ordinary files and folders; plan storage and backups based on the actual size of your captures and how long you intend to retain them. There is no universally appropriate drive size established here.

WARC is a format, not a completeness promise
The Internet Archive’s WARC Documentation, Release 0.1, dated February 7, 2017, describes WARC as an extension of ARC that adds flexibility for metadata and named headers. WARC is a container format for web-archive records; choosing it does not guarantee that every site can be captured or replayed completely.
Capture limits, privacy, and reliability
Modern pages may depend on scripts, APIs, login state, delayed content, or interaction. Official feature descriptions establish what these products offer, not a universal level of fidelity across every site. For pages that matter, test your own targets and verify the output. If a record is important, keep more than one representation where practical—for example, the page copy plus a screenshot or PDF.
- Authenticated pages: verify that the capture includes the view you intended and that account-specific material is not unintentionally stored in a shared archive.
- Dynamic or delayed content: allow the page to reach the state you need; deferred images and iframes may require explicit loading before capture.
- Collection durability: keep a separate backup of important local archives. ArchiveBox’s ordinary file-and-folder storage makes backup planning relevant, but the right schedule and medium depend on your retention needs.
- Extension/server boundary: the ArchiveBox extension’s server workflow requires a reachable ArchiveBox instance and API-key configuration; local extension artifacts are not the same as a server archive.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot or PDF rather than an offline HTML file, ScreenshotNeo is an API and MCP server alternative to try first: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; and its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. Its API returns a screenshot or PDF, not a self-contained HTML archive.
For example, a GET request can capture a page as WebP:

Troubleshooting common capture problems
The saved HTML is missing images or frames
Some resources load only after scrolling or waiting. For SingleFile, use its documented option to load deferred images and iframes before saving, then inspect the saved file offline. If a resource remains absent, it may not have been available to the capture or may depend on site behavior that a static saved copy cannot reproduce.
The archive does not include the page I expected
Check the URL submitted, the ArchiveBox server’s accessibility, and—when submitting through its extension—the API-key configuration. Then inspect the snapshot folder and index for the available outputs; a capture attempt does not imply that every output was successfully produced.
Local extension captures disappear
ArchiveBox’s extension documentation says local capture artifacts are removed after 30 days by default unless changed. If the page needs to be retained longer, adjust that behavior as documented or submit the page to the ArchiveBox server workflow and verify that the server-side snapshot exists.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA dynamic page looks different from the live site
Compare the capture with the exact page state you intended to preserve. Login state, delayed requests, and interaction-triggered content can affect what is available at capture time. Try another representation, such as a screenshot or PDF alongside HTML, and verify that it records the relevant content.

Which workflow should you use?
- Choose SingleFile for a one-click or command-line-created single HTML page that you want to open offline.
- Choose ArchiveBox for a self-hosted collection, multiple output formats, browser-history or bookmark imports, and recurring URL intake.
- Choose ScreenshotNeo when the deliverable is an image or PDF and an API or AI-agent workflow is more useful than a stored HTML page.
Before committing to a workflow, consider the offline reader, number of pages, automation needs, comfort maintaining a server, retention period, and whether multiple representations are necessary. Test with pages that resemble your real workload, including pages with deferred content or sign-in, rather than assuming one successful capture predicts every site.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does WARC guarantee that a page can be replayed exactly as it appeared?
No. WARC is an archival record format, not a guarantee of complete capture or exact replay.
Can ScreenshotNeo replace SingleFile for offline HTML pages?
No. ScreenshotNeo returns screenshots or PDFs; SingleFile is the relevant option here for a page saved as one HTML file.
