These are different artifacts, and none should be assumed to preserve a website’s live functionality. Match the tool to the job, then test it on the pages you actually need to capture.
Choose by what you need to keep
| Need | Good fit to investigate | What it saves or does |
|---|---|---|
| Save a complete page as one offline-readable file | SingleFile | Its site describes saving a page and its resources in one HTML file that can be opened offline in a browser. |
| Keep a visual record you can mark up | OpenCapture | Its product page describes full-page PNG or PDF capture, plus local cropping, drawing, text, and blur tools. |
| Save clips in different formats and organize them locally | TagSpaces Web Clipper | It describes HTML, MHTML, Markdown, PNG, and URL files, with tags and full-text search in TagSpaces. |
| Submit URLs to an archive you operate | ArchiveBox Browser Extension | It sends tabs or matching URLs to an ArchiveBox instance; the extension is a way to submit captures, not the archive server itself. |
These are workflow examples, not a controlled head-to-head ranking. Product feature descriptions do not establish that one extension captures every site more reliably than another.

Save an entire web page for offline viewing
SingleFile: one HTML file with page resources
SingleFile is the clearest fit when the desired result is a page file rather than a picture. Its official site says it saves resources such as images, stylesheets, fonts, and frames into a single HTML file for offline viewing. Its site lists Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. The Chrome Web Store listing also describes capturing selected content, frames, links, and multiple tabs, as well as highlighting, notes, and removing content. Optional destinations listed there include Google Drive, Dropbox, GitHub, and WebDAV. Those destinations are optional workflows, so “save as a file” does not necessarily mean every copy remains only on the computer.
A saved HTML page can retain more of the page’s structure and styling than a screenshot, but it is still a saved copy, not a working clone of the original web application. Pages dependent on scripts, logins, live data, or services may not behave offline as they did online. For pages that matter, open the saved file after capture and check the parts you need.

TagSpaces: browser-dependent complete-page output
TagSpaces documents a “Save Complete Page” action whose format depends on the browser: MHTML in Chromium-based browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Opera, and PDF in Firefox. The formats are not interchangeable. MHTML is a packaged web-page format; PDF is a document representation. If you require a specific format, confirm what your browser’s workflow produces before capturing a large set.
TagSpaces says clips remain on the device by default and describes copying them to USB, NAS, or cloud folders. These are vendor-described product capabilities, not an independent privacy audit or a guarantee about every storage destination you choose.
Capture a full-page screenshot or PDF
OpenCapture: visual capture with annotation
OpenCapture describes full-page capture to PNG or PDF, with crop, drawing, text, and blur tools performed locally. Its site says its free capture workflow requires no account and that captures are rendered and edited locally; treat those privacy statements as the maker’s description. Choose this type of tool when the visible appearance matters more than retaining page resources—for example, when you need a marked-up visual reference.
TagSpaces: stitched tall PNG
TagSpaces’ separate full-page screenshot action scrolls through the page in viewport-sized steps and stitches the sections into one tall PNG. Its documentation says fixed and sticky elements are hidden after the first capture to avoid duplicate copies. Long captures can take several seconds because of browser capture limits. A stitched image is useful as a visual record, but it is not a searchable, editable web page.
A screenshot captures appearance; a PDF presents content as a document. Neither is the same as a self-contained HTML page. Choose based on what you need to read, share, annotate, or retain later.
Organize clips or build an archive
TagSpaces for searchable local organization
TagSpaces describes its clips as ordinary HTML, MHTML, Markdown, PNG, or URL files, and its product page describes local full-text search and tags in TagSpaces. This makes it worth considering when the task is not just capturing a page but finding saved material later. Tags and full-text search are organization features of TagSpaces, rather than properties automatically added to every file by the browser extension.
ArchiveBox when you already want a server-based archive
The ArchiveBox browser extension describes sending individual tabs or URLs matching patterns to an ArchiveBox instance. It lists screenshots, Chrome/Edge MHTML copies, optional SingleFile HTML copies, and export options. Consider it when you already intend to use an ArchiveBox instance and want a browser-side way to submit pages. Installing the extension alone does not provide the archive server.
Check browser support, storage, and capture behavior
- Confirm browser and output together. A feature name such as “save complete page” does not guarantee the same file type in every browser. TagSpaces specifically documents MHTML for Chromium-based browsers and PDF for Firefox.
- Decide where the copy should live. Check whether a workflow saves locally, uploads to an optional destination, or submits a URL to a server you operate. SingleFile’s Chrome listing describes optional cloud and WebDAV destinations; TagSpaces describes on-device clips by default; ArchiveBox submits to an instance.
- Test the page types you care about. Authenticated pages, virtual scrolling, dynamic content, and restricted browser pages can be edge cases for capture. No controlled comparison establishes how the named extensions handle all such pages.
- Inspect the result, not just the success message. Open the offline file, scroll the full image, or review the PDF. Confirm that essential images, text, and sections are present before relying on the capture.
Extension store listings and browser behavior can change. GoFullPage’s Chrome Web Store publisher page listed version 8.9 on September 24, 2026, and version 8.8 on September 10, 2026; it also listed a January 2026 capture improvement for chat interfaces. That indicates active maintenance, not proof of comparative reliability. Check the current store listing and browser compatibility before installing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse a screenshot API instead of a browser extension
If you need code-driven captures from an application or workflow rather than a button in a browser, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it accepts a URL in one API request, removes known consent banners and other overlays before capture, and bills only clean shots. Its API returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, and it also offers an MCP server for AI agents.
Or skip the browser setup: the following cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of the target URL. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python equivalent:
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js equivalent:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.
Common capture problems and what to check
The saved page is incomplete or looks different offline
Different capture formats preserve different things, and an offline copy is not a functioning web application. Check whether you saved HTML, MHTML, PDF, or an image; then open the artifact in the intended viewer. For a page that depends on a login, live data, or scripts, test the exact content you need rather than assuming it will remain available offline.

Stitched captures may need to scroll through the page and process each viewport. TagSpaces documents that long captures take several seconds and that it hides fixed and sticky elements after the first capture to avoid duplication. Review the resulting image for missing or repeated content.
The output format is not the one you expected
Verify the browser-specific behavior in the extension documentation. For TagSpaces’ documented complete-page action, Chromium-based browsers save MHTML while Firefox saves PDF; its full-page screenshot action is a separate PNG workflow.
A saved URL is not showing up in an archive
If using the ArchiveBox extension, verify that it is configured to submit to an ArchiveBox instance and that the URL was submitted. The extension is not itself the server that stores and organizes the archive.
A dynamic or protected page does not capture as expected
Try the extension on the specific page while it is open and in the state you need to retain. Pages involving authentication, virtual scrolling, dynamic updates, or browser restrictions are potential edge cases; available product descriptions do not establish a universal success rate.

Which kind of capture should you pick?
- Choose SingleFile when one offline-readable HTML file with page resources is the goal.
- Choose a screenshot or PDF workflow when a visual record or document is what you need to share or annotate.
- Choose TagSpaces when local clips plus tags and full-text search in its organizer fit your workflow.
- Choose the ArchiveBox extension when you want to submit browser tabs or URLs to an ArchiveBox instance.
- Choose an API such as ScreenshotNeo when captures belong in code or an AI-agent workflow rather than a browser toolbar.
