Choose a managed website builder if you want hosting and routine platform maintenance handled in one service. Choose self-hosted WordPress if you want to choose your host and control more of the setup—and are willing to take on more operational work. WordPress.com is a third option: it runs WordPress as a hosted service, so it is not the same thing as installing WordPress yourself.
First, clarify what “WordPress” means
WordPress.org provides open-source software that you install with a web host. You select the hosting arrangement and manage more of the site’s operating setup. By contrast, WordPress.com is a hosted service that uses WordPress; its hosting and maintenance model is closer to that of a managed builder.
That distinction matters in any comparison. A hosted builder and WordPress.com both bundle infrastructure, though their features and terms differ. Self-hosted WordPress offers a different balance of choice and responsibility. Even Wix’s comparison guide focuses on WordPress.com because it considers that service more similar to Wix; as a vendor-authored comparison, it should be read in that context.
How the options compare
| Decision | Managed builder or WordPress.com | Self-hosted WordPress |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting and maintenance | Hosting is part of the service. WordPress.com says plans include hosting and automatic updates; technical features vary by plan. | You choose a separate host and take responsibility for more of the operating setup. The host needs to meet WordPress’s recommended requirements. |
| Control and features | The provider operates the platform. Check that your particular plan supports the features you need. | You choose the host and manage the WordPress installation, themes, and plugins. Actual capabilities and costs depend on the implementation and extensions. |
| Moving elsewhere | Portability depends on the provider and platform. Wix sites must run on Wix servers; Squarespace can export certain content for WordPress, but not every feature transfers. | You can choose among hosts, but moving a site still takes planning and may require migration work. |
| Cost | Compare the current plan, billing term, domain, and paid add-ons you need. | Include hosting, domain, and any paid extensions over the same period. It is not automatically cheaper. |
What you take on with self-hosted WordPress
Self-hosted WordPress needs a web host. WordPress.org recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS. WordPress may still run on older software, but the project warns that end-of-life versions can expose a site to security vulnerabilities. Check the current WordPress hosting requirements when choosing a host.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The trade-off is operational as well as technical: you decide where the site runs and manage more of its setup. Managed hosting can cover technical tasks such as backups, security, and caching, but what is included depends on the service. WordPress.com says hosting and automatic updates are included in its plans, while available features vary by plan. Review the WordPress.com plan features for the plan you are considering.
Understand the portability trade-off
Wix
Wix says its sites must run on Wix servers because of its SaaS architecture. It also says users own the content they build and can manage a domain through another provider. Those statements distinguish content and domain control from moving the working Wix site itself; see Wix’s export and embedding guidance.

Squarespace
Squarespace supports exporting certain content for WordPress, but says some features do not export because they depend on its platform code. Treat an export as a partial transfer, not a promise that the entire site will work identically elsewhere. Its export guide was last updated February 12, 2026.
How to compare costs fairly
There is no meaningful universal price comparison without the location, billing term, and feature requirements. Build a like-for-like total for the same period rather than comparing a builder’s headline plan price with only the base cost of WordPress hosting.

Which option fits your situation?
Choose a managed builder if
- You want hosting included rather than choosing a separate host.
- You prefer the provider to handle routine platform operations.
- The provider’s features and portability limits suit the site you plan to make.
Choose self-hosted WordPress if
- You want to choose the hosting arrangement and manage the WordPress installation.
- You are prepared to oversee more of the site’s operating setup.
- You have checked that the host and any required extensions meet your needs and budget.
Consider WordPress.com if
You want to use WordPress through a hosted service rather than manage a separate host yourself. Compare the features of the specific WordPress.com plan with the builder you are considering; plan features differ.

A practical decision checklist
- List the features your site needs. Verify them against the exact builder or hosted WordPress plan, rather than assuming every plan includes them.
- Decide who should manage hosting. If you do not want to choose a host and take on more operating work, favor a managed service. If control over the hosting arrangement matters, investigate self-hosted WordPress.
- Check what can move. Read the platform’s export documentation if you may change services later, and identify content or features that will need rebuilding.
- Calculate the full cost. Compare the plan or hosting bill, domain, required features, and paid extensions for the same billing period and region.
- For self-hosting, check the technical baseline. Confirm the host supports the requirements listed by WordPress.org.
