For a complete webpage in Chrome, install a full-page screenshot extension such as GoFullPage, FireShot, Full Page Screenshot, or Webpage Screenshot. These extensions scroll through the page, stitch the viewport images together, and let you save an image or PDF. The best choice depends on whether you need simple one-click capture, PDF workflows, annotation and redaction, OCR, sharing, or stronger privacy controls.
What a Chrome webpage screenshot extension does
A normal screenshot captures only the pixels currently visible in the browser window. A full-page extension automates a longer process: it scrolls the document, captures successive sections, and combines them into one result. Some tools also capture a selected element, a scrolling region, every open tab, or only the visible viewport.
Most extensions let you export PNG or JPG files. PDF export is useful when a capture is going to a client, support ticket, archive, or documentation system. Very tall pages may be split into several images or PDF pages because Chrome and image formats have practical size limits.

Store ratings, user counts, permissions, and feature sets can change after an update. Treat figures shown in a listing as a snapshot, not a permanent specification.

How to capture an entire webpage in Chrome
Install and review an extension
- Open the current Chrome Web Store listing for the extension you are considering.
- Read the requested permissions and open the linked privacy policy.
- Select Add to Chrome, confirm the installation, and pin the extension from Chrome’s Extensions menu if you want it always visible.
- Open the target page in a normal tab. Wait for the page’s important content, images, and embedded components to finish loading.
Run a full-page capture
- Click the extension icon and choose its full-page or entire-page command. The exact label differs by extension.
- Keep the tab active while the tool scrolls. Do not click, type, or navigate until processing finishes.
- Review the resulting image or editor preview. Look for repeated headers, missing lazy-loaded images, cut-off sticky elements, or blank sections.
- Download PNG or JPG for an image-based record. Choose PDF when the recipient needs a document or print-style handoff.
Capture only what you need
Use visible-area mode for a quick proof or bug report. Use selected-element mode when a page contains unrelated navigation. A scrolling-region option is useful for an embedded panel, table, or chat window that has its own scrollbar. If the extension supports all-tab capture, confirm that sensitive tabs are not included before exporting.
Saving a Chrome screenshot as a PDF
Choose the extension’s PDF export after the page has been stitched. Check whether it creates one long page or a conventional multi-page document; the difference matters for printing and accessibility. FireShot specifically lists PDF export and printing, while GoFullPage lists image and PDF downloads. If the extension has no PDF export, Chrome’s built-in print dialog can create a PDF from the page, but print CSS may omit backgrounds, overlays, or content that appears in a stitched screenshot.
Annotations, blur, redaction, and OCR
For a tutorial or support ticket, arrows and callouts identify the relevant control faster than a paragraph of explanation. Blur, pixelation, or redaction should be applied to account numbers, email addresses, tokens, and personal information before a file is shared. Redaction is safer when it permanently removes pixels rather than placing a movable shape over them; inspect the exported file to verify.

OCR can make text in a screenshot searchable or copyable, but recognition errors are possible with small fonts, unusual typefaces, and low contrast. Keep the original capture when the screenshot is being used as evidence, and label any OCR-derived text as a convenience rather than the authoritative record.
Is a webpage screenshot extension safe?
Safety depends on permissions, processing, and sharing behavior—not on a star rating alone.
Check permissions before installing
- Read the current Chrome Web Store permission prompt and listing.
- Determine whether the extension can read data on all websites or only when activated.
- Open the publisher’s privacy policy and look for statements about collection, retention, and third-party sharing.
- Find out whether captures are processed locally or uploaded when you create a share link.
Control what you share
A screenshot can contain passwords, customer information, internal URLs, or hidden page data. Do not capture a logged-in administration page unless that is the purpose, and remove sensitive information before uploading or emailing the file. For a sharing feature, assume the image leaves your computer unless the policy clearly says otherwise. Recheck the listing and policy after major updates because extension behavior and distribution can change.

Pages that may not capture correctly
Chrome restricts extensions from reliably reading some browser-controlled surfaces. Extension-store pages, chrome:// URLs, new-tab pages, and built-in PDF viewers may be unavailable or behave differently. Test the exact page type before relying on it for a production record.
Dynamic sites introduce additional failure modes:
- Lazy loading: images appear only after scrolling. Wait for them or use a tool that explicitly loads lazy images.
- Sticky headers: a fixed navigation bar may be repeated in every stitched segment.
- Infinite scroll: there may be no final page height, so capture a defined region instead.
- Animations and video: frames can differ between segments. Pause moving content when consistency matters.
- Cross-origin frames: an embedded frame may be blocked or captured as an empty area.
- Very tall documents: the extension may split output or hit browser memory limits.
Troubleshooting checklist
The extension icon does nothing
Reload the ordinary webpage, confirm the extension is enabled at chrome://extensions, and check whether the page is a restricted Chrome surface. Try the capture in a new tab with the same URL if the original tab has unusual navigation state.

Wait for network activity and lazy images to finish, disable aggressive content blockers for a test, and retry with visible-area mode. A page protected by a bot check or CAPTCHA may intentionally prevent automated capture. Capture after completing the check as a normal visitor, provided that doing so is allowed by the site’s terms.

Sections are duplicated or missing
Sticky headers, infinite-scroll code, and layout changes during scrolling commonly cause stitching errors. Disable animations, wait for the layout to settle, select a specific element, or capture shorter scrolling regions.
The PDF is unreadable or split unexpectedly
Use the extension’s editor or export settings to choose a conventional page format where available. For a very long page, accept multiple pages rather than shrinking everything onto one sheet. Open the exported PDF in a second viewer before sending it.
A share link exposes sensitive information
Delete the shared item if the service provides a removal control, revoke access where possible, and create a redacted replacement. Do not assume that closing the browser removes a server-side copy; consult the service’s current policy.

When an extension is the wrong tool
Extensions are convenient for an interactive, human-reviewed capture. They are less suitable for scheduled monitoring, bulk URL lists, reproducible API jobs, or an AI agent that needs screenshots without a browser window. In those cases, use a screenshot service with explicit options for waiting, authentication, output format, and failure reporting.

Can Chrome capture a full page without installing an extension?
Chrome DevTools includes a full-page screenshot command in many desktop versions: open DevTools, use the command menu, and run “Capture full size screenshot.” Availability and behavior can vary, so test it on the page type you need.
Why is my full-page screenshot much taller than expected?
The page may use an expanding feed, an off-screen component with its own scroll area, or content that keeps loading. Capture a selected element or fixed scrolling region when the document has no stable end.
Should I keep the original screenshot after redacting it?
Yes. Keep the original in restricted storage when it is needed as evidence, and distribute only a separately exported redacted copy.
