1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo convert a webpage or HTML document to JPG, render it in a browser (or an HTML renderer), then save a JPEG screenshot. For one-off work, use a browser’s print or screenshot workflow. For repeatable results, Playwright or Puppeteer provide JPEG quality, full-page, viewport, clipping, and scale controls. Chrome Headless supplies a command-line screenshot path, while wkhtmltoimage can render an HTML file directly but has older-engine compatibility limitations.
Choose the conversion route
The right method depends on your input and how often you convert it. A URL needs a browser that can execute JavaScript and load fonts, images, and CSS. In-memory HTML or a local file can use the same browser APIs, or a command-line renderer when the document is simple.
| Route | Input | JPEG control | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright | URL, HTML in a page, or local file | JPEG, quality, full page, clip, device scale | Reliable scripted conversion across browsers | Dynamic pages need an explicit readiness strategy |
| Puppeteer | URL or HTML loaded in Chromium | JPEG, quality, full page, filename-derived format | Node.js and Chromium automation | Capture timing and page state remain your responsibility |
| Chrome Headless | URL or local page | Screenshot and window size; cited example is PNG | Minimal command-line capture | The documented example does not establish a JPG-specific flag |
| wkhtmltoimage | HTML input file or URL | Image output and local-path permissions | Older, simple HTML workflows | Its old manual does not prove modern JavaScript compatibility |
| Browsershot | URL or HTML | Delegates to Puppeteer and headless Chrome | PHP applications | Check current project dependencies before setup |
Convert a webpage to JPG with Playwright
Playwright’s Page screenshot API documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. JPEG quality defaults to 80. Full-page capture includes the scrollable page; a clip captures a rectangular CSS-pixel region. Device scale controls the resulting pixel density. JPEG does not preserve transparency: Playwright’s omitBackground option does not apply to JPEG.
Install
npm install playwright
npx playwright install chromium
Capture a URL as a JPEG
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({
path: 'page.jpg',
type: 'jpeg',
quality: 85,
fullPage: true
});
await browser.close();
Replace the URL and output path. waitUntil: 'networkidle' is useful for pages that finish loading network resources, but it is not a universal guarantee that late JavaScript, web fonts, animations, or lazy images have settled.

- Convert Between All Key Image Format
- Preserve Vector Graphics When Converting
Capture only an element or region
const card = page.locator('.invoice');
await card.screenshot({
path: 'invoice.jpg',
type: 'jpeg',
quality: 90
});
await page.screenshot({
path: 'hero.jpg',
type: 'jpeg',
quality: 90,
clip: { x: 0, y: 0, width: 1200, height: 650 }
});
An element screenshot waits for the locator’s element state and is preferable when the required output is a component rather than an entire document. A clip uses page coordinates, so confirm the viewport and responsive breakpoint first.
Improve deterministic output
- Set the viewport and device scale explicitly so dimensions do not depend on the machine running the script.
- Wait for a meaningful selector, such as
await page.locator('.report-ready').waitFor(), instead of relying only on a fixed delay. - Disable motion in a test-only stylesheet if an animation can change the captured frame.
- Scroll through a lazy-loaded page before a full-page screenshot when content appears only after scrolling.
- Use a higher JPEG quality for text-heavy images; JPEG remains lossy, so PNG is usually better when exact edges or transparency matter.
Convert HTML content or a local file with Playwright
Render an HTML string
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const html = `<!doctype html>
<html><body style="margin:0;background:#fff">
<h1>Monthly report</h1>
<p>Rendered from an HTML string.</p>
</body></html>`;
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1200, height: 800 } });
await page.setContent(html, { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'report.jpg', type: 'jpeg', quality: 88 });
await browser.close();
Open a local HTML file
import path from 'node:path';
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto(`file://${path.resolve('report.html')}`);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'report.jpg', type: 'jpeg', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
Local pages often reference relative CSS, images, or fonts. Keep those files in the expected directory and check browser security restrictions when a page tries to fetch resources from another origin.
Convert a webpage to JPG with Puppeteer
Puppeteer documents JPEG among its supported screenshot formats, along with a quality setting and full-page capture. The format can be inferred from the filename extension, but specifying it removes ambiguity.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({
path: 'page.jpg',
type: 'jpeg',
quality: 85,
fullPage: true
});
await browser.close();
For HTML input, call page.setContent(html) before page.screenshot(). For one element, use page.locator('.invoice').screenshot({ path: 'invoice.jpg', type: 'jpeg' }) in current Puppeteer versions, or obtain the element’s bounding box and pass a clip when your installed version does not expose locator screenshots.

Use Chrome Headless from the command line
Chrome’s official Headless command-line reference documents --screenshot and --window-size. Its quoted example saves screenshot.png in the current directory. The same reference documents --timeout, which sets the maximum wait before capture even if loading continues; it does not guarantee that every script, font, or image has finished.
google-chrome --headless --disable-gpu
--window-size=1440,900
--timeout=10000
--screenshot
https://example.com
Because the cited command-line example is PNG-oriented, use Playwright or Puppeteer when you need directly documented JPEG output and quality control. If your Chrome build offers additional output options, verify them against that build’s current help and documentation rather than assuming the flags are portable.
Use wkhtmltoimage for an HTML file
The Debian wkhtmltoimage manual describes converting an HTML page into an image and documents --allow for permitting access to local paths.
wkhtmltoimage --allow /path/to/assets report.html report.jpg
This is useful for straightforward documents that depend on local assets. The manual is old, so treat it as evidence of documented functionality—not proof that the renderer supports modern CSS, JavaScript frameworks, web components, or current browser security behavior. Test representative pages before adopting it for production.

Settings that determine JPG dimensions and quality
Viewport versus full page
A viewport screenshot records what fits in the browser window. Full-page mode expands the capture to the page’s scrollable height. A very long page can produce an unusually tall JPEG and may expose layout bugs that are hidden at normal viewport height.
Scale and pixels
CSS dimensions and output pixels are separate. A 1,440-pixel CSS viewport at device scale 2 can produce roughly twice as many output pixels in each dimension. Larger images improve detail but consume more memory and storage.
Quality and format
Playwright’s documented JPEG quality default is 80; Puppeteer exposes a quality setting as well. Raise quality for small type, diagrams, or repeated editing, and lower it when transfer size matters. JPEG has no usable alpha transparency in these screenshot APIs. Choose PNG when transparent backgrounds or perfectly sharp UI text are more important than file size.
Timing and dynamic content
Pages can continue changing after navigation resolves. Wait for a selector that signals application readiness, wait for critical images to complete, or use a bounded delay for a known animation. A timeout protects the job from hanging; it cannot predict when an arbitrary site is visually complete.

Automate repeated captures with ScreenshotNeo
If you need a hosted converter rather than maintaining browsers, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the shot was billed.
Or skip the browser setup
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. This cURL request saves a JPEG/WebP response using the supplied URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper settings and page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, blocking ads/trackers/requests/resource types, custom headers/cookies/user agents/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, selectable cache TTLs, signed public-image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, up to 100 URLs per bulk call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and compatibility with parameter names used by other screenshot APIs.

Troubleshooting
The JPG is blank or mostly white
- Wait for a readiness selector rather than capturing immediately after navigation.
- Check that the URL is reachable without authentication, a bot challenge, or a required cookie.
- For local files, verify relative asset paths and permissions.
Images or fonts are missing
- Wait for image completion and web-font readiness.
- Confirm the renderer can reach the asset host and that requests are not blocked by CORS, mixed-content rules, or an ad/tracker filter.
- For wkhtmltoimage, add the required local directory with
--allow.
The page is cut off
- Use full-page capture instead of a viewport screenshot.
- For a component, wait for its final dimensions before taking an element or clipped screenshot.
- Check responsive breakpoints: changing viewport width can alter both content and height.
The output is blurry or too large
- Adjust JPEG quality and device scale independently.
- Use PNG for line art or text that shows compression artifacts.
- Resize after capture only when the target dimensions are known; repeated JPEG recompression reduces quality.
The process hangs
- Set navigation and overall job timeouts.
- Investigate requests that never resolve, infinite scroll, or scripts waiting for user interaction.
- Use a bounded wait and log the final URL, response status, and page errors.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Launching a fresh browser for every image is slower and uses more memory than reusing a browser process with isolated pages. Reuse workers for trusted workloads, but close pages and contexts to prevent leaks. Limit concurrency so CPU, RAM, and network bandwidth remain predictable. Cache stable pages when freshness is not required, and record the URL, viewport, scale, quality, renderer version, and readiness condition alongside each image so a later capture is reproducible.
Best Value
- Convert JPG, JPEG & PNG to PDF
- Select multiple images
For public pages, respect access controls and terms. Do not put API keys in client-side HTML or public image URLs unless you use a signed-link mechanism. When converting private pages, supply credentials through protected headers or cookies and store output where its access policy matches the source.
Which method should you use?
- One image now: use a normal browser screenshot or Chrome Headless.
- Repeatable JPEGs in code: use Playwright or Puppeteer.
- HTML strings in a PHP application: evaluate Browsershot after checking its current Puppeteer and Chrome requirements.
- Simple legacy local documents: test wkhtmltoimage, including its local-path permissions.
- Many URLs, cleanup, or AI-agent workflows: use ScreenshotNeo first for clean shots, billing only for successful captures, and its MCP tools.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I rename a PNG file to .jpg?
No. Renaming changes the extension, not the encoded pixels. Decode the rendered image and export it as JPEG with a quality setting.
Will a JPG preserve a transparent HTML background?
No. JPEG does not carry an alpha channel in the documented Playwright workflow; choose PNG when transparency is required.
Does full-page capture include content loaded only after scrolling?
Not necessarily. Trigger scrolling or otherwise cause lazy content to load, then capture after the page reaches its intended final state.
Is wkhtmltoimage suitable for every modern website?
No. Its manual documents the conversion command and local-file permissions, but the old documentation does not establish compatibility with modern site features.
