In one 2026 benchmark on an M4 Mac, WebGPU ran the tested ONNX models 1.4× to 9.4× faster than four-thread WASM in steady state—but the advantage depended sharply on the model and input size. Those figures come from a single author’s test, not a general performance guarantee. For your application, measure both providers with your actual model, browser, device, and data path.

What the benchmark measured

NullPointerZen reported the results on September 29, 2026, using ONNX Runtime Web 1.27.0 on an M4 Mac with Chromium 149 and 16 GB of memory. Each configuration ran in a fresh browser process; the reported steady-state figure was the median of runs two through six. The principal comparison used four WASM threads. The author ran three repeats, but the report does not provide uncertainty intervals or independent replication. Read the benchmark and its setup details.

The reported timings were:

Model and input WebGPU Four-thread WASM Reported ratio
ISNet INT8, 1024×1024 359 ms 2,133 ms 5.9×
ISNet FP16, 1024×1024 209 ms 1,960 ms 9.4×
Real-ESRGAN x4v3, 184×184 tile 331 ms 485 ms 1.5×
Real-ESRGAN x4v3, 120×120 tile 150 ms 211 ms 1.4×

These are the author’s measurements and ratios for those model configurations on that setup. The report did not test Windows, discrete GPUs, phones, Safari, or Firefox, so the numbers do not establish what those devices or browsers will achieve.

Why the speedup is not a universal multiplier

The results vary from 1.4× to 9.4× across the reported models and inputs. That is enough to show why a single “WebGPU is X times faster” claim can mislead: a provider comparison is tied to a particular model, precision, input shape, browser, device, and timing method.

The benchmark author suggests that larger convolution workloads may expose more GPU parallelism, while smaller workloads may feel fixed overhead more strongly. That is an interpretation, not a measured explanation: the report did not profile individual operators. Treat it as a hypothesis to investigate, not a rule for predicting your own result.

When to try WebGPU—and when WASM remains sensible

Measure WebGPU for compute-heavy inference

ONNX Runtime recommends considering WebGPU for more compute-intensive models or when you want to use the client’s GPU. The documented setup imports onnxruntime-web/webgpu and requests the provider with executionProviders: ['webgpu']. See the WebGPU execution provider tutorial.

Keep WASM in consideration for lightweight models

ONNX Runtime says WASM can remain appropriate for very lightweight models when a small binary size matters. Its performance guidance also recommends WASM for very small models or when a GPU is unavailable. A GPU provider is not automatically the best choice for every workload; compare the end-to-end result that matters to your application. See Performance Diagnosis.

Check support and operator execution, not just provider selection

WebGPU support depends on browser and platform. ONNX Runtime’s web JavaScript getting-started guide and support matrix lists WebGPU for Chrome and Edge on macOS and WASM across its documented browser columns, with version requirements for some platform combinations. Check the current matrix for the browsers and devices you actually deploy to; support can change.

Requesting WebGPU does not prove that every model operation runs on the GPU. Execution providers claim supported nodes or subgraphs, and ONNX Runtime’s web tutorial describes broader operator coverage for WASM than for WebGPU and other GPU providers. Unsupported operations may fall back to CPU and change performance. Consult the execution-provider documentation and web tutorials when interpreting provider behavior.

Make the measurement match your application

Separate startup from steady state

The benchmark reported first-run WebGPU times above its steady-state results. Record cold-start and warmed-up inference separately: an application that runs inference once may care more about startup, while one that repeatedly processes inputs may care more about sustained latency. Do not compare a cold run for one provider with a warmed-up run for the other.

Use the real model, shape, and thread settings

Benchmark the deployed model at the input dimensions, tile size, batch size, and precision your application uses. Record the WASM thread count and test the browser and device mix you support. The reported comparison used four WASM threads on one Mac; it does not establish how another thread configuration or device will compare.

Include transfers and downstream work

With ordinary WebGPU session inputs and outputs, tensors reside in CPU memory and are copied to GPU memory and back. If your application already has GPU-resident inputs or continues processing outputs on the GPU, ONNX Runtime’s IO binding guidance describes keeping data on the GPU to avoid those transfers. Consequently, an isolated inference timing may differ from end-to-end application latency.

Check whether graph capture fits

The WebGPU tutorial describes graph capture as a possible optimization when the model has static shapes and all kernels run on WebGPU. Dynamic inputs or CPU fallback can make those conditions unsuitable. Treat it as an option to evaluate only after checking the model and execution path, not as a guaranteed speedup.

Use runtime diagnostics to investigate surprises

If measured performance differs from expectations, ONNX Runtime’s performance-diagnosis guide recommends using runtime diagnostics to investigate. Check provider assignment and the full application path rather than inferring GPU execution from the provider name alone.

How to report a WebGPU-versus-WASM result accurately

  • Name the model, precision, input dimensions, browser, operating system, and device.
  • State the WASM thread count and whether the timing is cold-start, steady-state, or end-to-end.
  • Say whether input/output transfers and downstream processing are included.
  • Describe the result as measured on that setup, not as a general multiplier.
