In WebdriverIO, browser is the active session object for controlling a browser or mobile device. Use it for session-level tasks such as navigation, reading the current URL or title, managing windows, setting timeouts, and running scripts. For page-element interaction, use element-level commands; for deliberately composed keyboard, pointer, or wheel input, use browser.action() and finish with perform().
The examples below follow the current WebdriverIO API documentation, which labels its scope as version 8.x and later. Exact commands and capabilities can vary with the selected driver backend and environment.
What the WebdriverIO browser object represents
WebdriverIO exposes two broad command layers: protocol bindings that map to the underlying automation driver, and higher-level convenience commands available on objects such as browser and element. The browser object represents the active session; it is not the browser application itself or a browser installation. The command set available in a session can depend on its backend.
In a test-runner project, the runner initializes and ends the session. You can use its global browser or driver, or import the globals from @wdio/globals. In standalone usage, create a session with remote and use the returned browser object.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Standalone session example
import { remote } from 'webdriverio';
const browser = await remote({
capabilities: {
browserName: 'chrome'
}
});
try {
await browser.url('https://example.com');
console.log(await browser.getTitle());
} finally {
await browser.deleteSession();
}
This standalone example assumes a compatible WebDriver service or driver is available and configured for the environment. Do not manually create or delete a session that the test runner manages for you.
Navigate to a page and inspect it
For straightforward navigation, browser.url() is the convenient method. The protocol reference also documents navigateTo(), getUrl(), and getTitle().
await browser.url('https://example.com');
const currentUrl = await browser.getUrl();
const pageTitle = await browser.getTitle();
if (currentUrl !== 'https://example.com/') {
throw new Error(`Unexpected URL: ${currentUrl}`);
}
console.log({ currentUrl, pageTitle });
Checking the URL or title is useful for confirming navigation reached an expected point, but it does not prove that every asynchronous page task has finished. If the test depends on content loading or a particular state, wait for that condition rather than assuming navigation alone is sufficient.

Use browser history, refresh, and windows
Browser-level commands cover navigation history and browsing contexts. The WebDriver reference documents back(), forward(), refresh(), window handles, and switching between windows.
await browser.back();
console.log('After back:', await browser.getUrl());
await browser.forward();
await browser.refresh();
const handles = await browser.getWindowHandles();
console.log('Open browsing contexts:', handles);
When a workflow opens more than one window or tab, identify the intended handle before making assertions. Do not assume that a particular handle corresponds to a particular page unless your test establishes that mapping.
const handles = await browser.getWindowHandles();
if (handles.length < 2) {
throw new Error('Expected another browsing context');
}
await browser.switchToWindow(handles[1]);
console.log('Active page:', await browser.getUrl());
Window availability and behavior can depend on the driver and whether the session is a browser or mobile session. Check the relevant backend documentation when a command is unavailable.

Choose the right command for input
For ordinary page interactions, use the higher-level APIs exposed by the relevant element or browser object. Use the low-level action builder when the interaction requires a deliberate sequence of keyboard, pointer, or wheel input. Build the action chain and call perform() to dispatch it.
await browser.action('pointer')
.move({ x: 100, y: 200 })
.down()
.up()
.perform();
This is a composed pointer sequence; it is not a substitute for a simple element interaction. Action types and support can differ by environment, so confirm that the selected driver supports the input you need.

A navigation command, URL check, or title check is not a general signal that a page is ready for every next step. Prefer a condition-based wait for the element or state the test actually needs. The current protocol reference includes session timeouts, but WebdriverIO’s current timeout documentation does not recommend implicit timeouts because they can affect other WebdriverIO commands.

Use the current API documentation for the exact wait method and syntax in your installed WebdriverIO version. Older v5 and v6 documentation results can show signatures that are not appropriate for current projects.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know whether a command belongs to the browser or an element
Think in terms of scope: browser commands operate on the session or browsing context, while element commands operate on a particular page element. The API also exposes commands on other objects, including mocks. When unsure, look up the object that owns the command instead of assuming every command is available on browser.
- Use browser-level operations for navigation, window context, session timeouts, and script execution.
- Use element-level operations for interacting with a selected page element.
- Use action commands for composed input sequences when the environment supports the required input type.
For advanced projects, the browser object also documents addCommand for custom commands and overwriteCommand for replacing a command. Treat these as extension points rather than prerequisites for writing a basic test.

Capture a page screenshot without managing a browser session
For automated screenshots, a WebdriverIO session gives you control over the browser, but you must have the driver environment and session setup working. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server: a GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot handling removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off.
Or skip the browser setup
Use a single request to capture a page. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo and get 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common browser-command problems
browseris undefined: Confirm the code is running in a WebdriverIO test-runner context where the global is initialized, or import the appropriate global. In standalone code, obtain the object fromremote.- Session creation or a command fails: Check that the session’s driver backend supports the command and capability, and that the required service or driver is configured. Browser and mobile environments do not necessarily expose identical commands.
- Navigation completes but the page content is missing: A URL or title check only confirms a limited aspect of state. Wait for the page condition your test depends on.
- An action sequence is not dispatched: Confirm the action chain ends in
perform()and that the input type is supported by the environment. - A window switch targets the wrong page: Retrieve the available handles, establish which one represents the intended context, and switch before asserting page state.
- Timeout behavior affects unrelated commands: Avoid relying on implicit timeouts; use a condition-based wait tailored to the state required by the test.
