There is no single best size or format for every web thumbnail: start with the destination, then make an appropriately sized, crop-safe version for each place it will appear. For YouTube, use a 16:9 image at 3840 × 2160 pixels for a standard video thumbnail, or a 9:16 image at 2160 × 3840 for a Short; for web pages, use a representative, crawlable image with suitable metadata and responsive delivery.
Choose the thumbnail size for its destination
A thumbnail can appear as a small card, a large video preview, a mobile feed image, or a search result. Those surfaces do not necessarily use the same dimensions or crop. Pick the destination first, create the master artwork at the largest relevant size, then export derivatives for the other placements. Do not assume that one image will display uncropped everywhere.
YouTube standard video thumbnails
YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels in a 16:9 aspect ratio for standard video thumbnails. The minimum width is 640 pixels. The documented upload limit is 2 MB for mobile uploads and 50 MB for desktop uploads. The limit is therefore not just a matter of pixel dimensions: export a file that meets the limit for the upload method you use.
YouTube Shorts thumbnails
For Shorts, YouTube recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels in a 9:16 ratio, with a minimum height of 640 pixels. The documented upload limits are 2 MB on mobile and 50 MB on desktop. Keep the important subject and any text clear of the outer edges, since a vertical asset may be shown in contexts that do not display the entire frame.

YouTube podcast playlists
YouTube recommends a square 1:1 thumbnail for podcast playlists rather than the 16:9 format used for standard video thumbnails. Treat this as a separate destination: design or crop a square version instead of relying on a landscape image to remain legible in a square frame.
Google video search thumbnails
Google’s video SEO documentation lists BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG, and AVIF as supported formats for video thumbnails. It specifies a minimum size of 60 × 30 pixels and says larger images are preferred. The image must also be reachable by Googlebot. These are documented requirements for Google video thumbnails, not universal specifications for every thumbnail on the web.
How to choose the right dimensions and crop
- List the placements. Write down where the image will appear: for example, a video listing, a Shorts feed, a podcast playlist, a web-page card, or a search result.
- Record each aspect ratio and constraint. Use the destination’s documented ratio, minimum dimensions, and file-size limit. Keep each surface’s requirements attached to that surface; do not transfer a YouTube upload limit to an unrelated website.
- Build the largest master you need. Compose at the largest target dimensions, then export smaller derivatives. Starting with a small image and enlarging it can make fine details and text less clear.
- Protect the crop. Keep faces, logos, and essential words away from edges that may be cut off. If a destination has a different ratio, make a deliberate crop or alternate composition rather than stretching the original.
- Inspect at actual display sizes. Preview the image at its smallest expected size and on both narrow and wide layouts. If the focal subject or text is not immediately understandable, simplify or recompose it.
YouTube’s Data API documents thumbnail variants named default, medium, high, standard, and maxres. Typical video variants include 320 × 180, 480 × 360, 640 × 480, and 1280 × 720; which variants are available depends on the resource and the original upload. These are returned variants, not a reason to design your upload at one of those smaller sizes when YouTube recommends a larger source image.
Choose JPG, PNG, or another format
For a YouTube thumbnail upload, JPG and PNG are the safest choices documented by YouTube Help. Pick the format that gives you the visual quality you need while staying below the applicable upload limit. In practice, compare the exported file at its intended size: a technically supported format is not useful if the image looks poor or exceeds the destination’s byte limit.
Rank #2
Google’s video thumbnail format list is broader: BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG, and AVIF. That list applies to Google’s video thumbnail handling. It should not be read as a guarantee that every video platform, content management system, social network, or image editor accepts every listed format. When upload compatibility is uncertain, check the destination’s own requirements and use a supported raster format such as JPEG or PNG.
For a web page, consider the format supported by your delivery stack and the image’s role, but do not trade away accessibility or reliable delivery for a format choice. Ensure the final image is reachable at a stable URL when it is used for video search features.
Make the image clear when it is small
A thumbnail is a visual label, not a poster with room for every detail. YouTube advises keeping thumbnails simple rather than overly complex, choosing readable fonts, and combining composition, color, branding, and descriptive text carefully. The image may be rendered at many sizes and on different devices, so a design that only works at full resolution is not finished.
Prioritize one focal point
Choose one subject or action that communicates the video’s premise. Use contrast and composition to make that subject easy to find at a glance. Too many competing objects, decorative elements, or lines of text make the thumbnail harder to parse when reduced.

Use text sparingly
If text is essential to the image, use a short phrase, a readable font, and strong contrast against its background. Test it at the smallest expected display size; if it cannot be read there, shorten it or remove it. Do not use image text as a substitute for the actual video title or page content.
Match the audience and the title
Familiar visual features may help a thumbnail resonate with existing subscribers. For casual viewers, a clear action or emotion can be easier to understand without prior context. In either case, the title and thumbnail should tell a consistent story, and the title should accurately represent the video. A dramatic image that promises content the video does not contain is misleading, not effective design.
Implement web thumbnails with metadata and responsive images
For a web page, use a relevant, representative og:image and provide descriptive alternative text. Google Search Central recommends a high-resolution image where possible and cautions against an extreme aspect ratio. If the page participates in video search features, use a stable, crawlable image URL. A thumbnail can be visually correct and still fail its purpose if crawlers cannot retrieve it.
Serve an appropriate image for each viewport
Use srcset or <picture> so the browser can choose a suitable asset for the viewport and pixel density. For example, a site can provide a smaller card image and a larger version without forcing every visitor to download the largest file:

Replace the example paths and alternative text with files and descriptions that match the actual page. The sizes value should reflect the rendered layout, not simply the source image dimensions. When aspect ratios differ by layout, use <picture> with appropriate sources and test that the crop preserves the intended focal point.
Write alternative text for the image’s purpose
W3C guidance supports purpose-appropriate alternative text and advises against embedding text in images when equivalent HTML can preserve accessibility and searchability. Describe what matters in context, rather than listing visual details that add no useful information. If branding or recognition requires text inside the artwork, repeat its essential meaning in nearby HTML or metadata so the information is not available only to people who can see the image.
Test thumbnail changes with useful metrics
Use analytics to assess whether a design works for its audience rather than treating a general click-through-rate figure as a universal target. YouTube recommends reviewing thumbnail performance in Analytics. For broad discovery, compare Home and Suggested click-through rate during the first 24 hours on videos with above-average impressions. For subscribers, review Subscriptions Feed CTR. These are experiment metrics and contexts, not guaranteed benchmarks.
- Change a thumbnail only when you can identify what you are trying to improve, such as subject clarity or consistency with the title.
- Use the relevant traffic surface and audience when reviewing results; broad discovery and subscriber-feed performance are different contexts.
- Compare like with like and record the change and the period observed. A single result does not establish that one design will work for every topic or audience.
- Keep the image accurate and representative even when testing more attention-grabbing compositions.
YouTube Help also makes the undated statement, “Fun fact: 90% of the best-performing videos have custom thumbnails.” The page does not state a publication year, so treat this as YouTube’s undated statement, not as a dated or independently measured benchmark for a particular channel or video.
Generate a website image for thumbnail planning
A screenshot can help you inspect a web page, capture a visual reference, or create an image asset from HTML or CSS. It is not automatically a finished thumbnail: you still need to choose the target ratio, compose for small display sizes, crop safely, and meet the destination’s format and size limits.
Do it yourself in a browser
- Open the target page at the viewport and device scale that match the reference you need.
- Wait for the relevant content and images to finish loading, then capture the viewport or full page as appropriate.
- Crop or recompose the result for the destination ratio; do not stretch it to fit.
- Export in a format and file size accepted by the destination, then inspect the result at the smallest expected display size.
- For a web page, publish the image at a stable URL and provide relevant metadata, responsive markup, and descriptive alternative text.

ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot from one GET request. Its clean-shot steps accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. A screenshot still needs to be composed and exported for the thumbnail destination.
Install your access key as appropriate for your environment, then run this cURL example (replace the target URL as needed):

Troubleshoot common thumbnail problems
The upload is rejected
- Check the format first. For YouTube uploads, use JPG or PNG, the safest documented choices.
- Check the upload method’s byte limit. YouTube’s stated limit is 2 MB for mobile and 50 MB for desktop video-thumbnail uploads. Re-export or compress without making the image visibly unclear.
- Check dimensions and ratio. Standard videos and Shorts use different recommended ratios, and podcast playlists use a square recommendation. Make a destination-specific version rather than stretching the image.
The image looks blurry or the text disappears
- Inspect the source dimensions and avoid enlarging a small image beyond what it can support.
- Preview the actual small rendering, simplify the composition, and increase subject contrast or text size.
- Ensure the browser is selecting the expected
srcsetcandidate and that the chosen file exists.
The crop cuts off a face, logo, or key phrase
- Move essential elements inward from the edges and create a separate crop for each substantially different aspect ratio.
- Check narrow and wide previews, not only the original canvas.
A search or video surface does not show the intended image
- Verify that the image URL is stable, public, and reachable by the relevant crawler. Google specifically says its video thumbnail image must be reachable by Googlebot.
- Confirm that the page metadata points to the representative image and that it is not blocked or replaced by a broken URL.
- Allow for destination-specific processing and availability: YouTube’s API variants depend on the resource and original upload.
Thumbnail design checklist
- Choose the destination and its ratio, dimensions, format, and file-size limit before designing.
- Create destination-specific exports from a sufficiently large master; do not stretch one crop to cover every surface.
- Keep one clear focal point, readable type, and important content inside crop-safe areas.
- Check the smallest likely rendering on mobile and desktop.
- Keep image, title, and actual content consistent and accurate.
- For web pages, use representative metadata, responsive image delivery, a stable crawlable URL where needed, and purpose-appropriate alt text.
- Assess performance in the relevant analytics context rather than against a universal CTR target.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same thumbnail on YouTube and my website?
You can reuse the artwork if it suits both placements, but check each destination’s ratio, crop, file limits, and display size before publishing.
Does a custom thumbnail guarantee more views?
No. Thumbnail performance depends on the audience, topic, title, and placement; use the relevant analytics to evaluate changes.
