Web services protocols and related standards let software systems exchange messages, describe how to interact with a service, and—in some cases—help clients discover services. They do different jobs: SOAP packages messages, WSDL describes an interface and its bindings, HTTP can carry interactions, and UDDI supports service discovery. REST is an architectural style, not a wire protocol or message format.

What is a web service?

A web service is software designed for machine-to-machine interaction over a network. The W3C Web Services Architecture Working Group Note defines it as “A Web service is a software system designed to support interoperable machine-to-machine interaction over a network.” The definition appears in the W3C Web Services Architecture Note, published 11 February 2004.

It helps to distinguish the service from its agent: the service is the functionality being offered, while the agent is the particular software or hardware that sends and receives messages to provide it. A client and service must agree on what an exchange means and how it is structured, but that agreement can be expressed in different ways.

What do SOAP, WSDL, UDDI, HTTP, and REST each do?

Term Role What to remember
SOAP Message framework Packages and exchanges XML messages; it is not itself the network carrier.
WSDL Interface description Describes messages and operations and can specify bindings, formats, and endpoints.
UDDI Discovery standard Addresses describing and finding providers, services, and technical interfaces.
HTTP Protocol that can carry interactions It can transport web-service messages; it is distinct from SOAP message structure and WSDL description.
REST Architectural style Organizes interactions around resources, representations, a uniform interface, and statelessness.

These roles come from separate standards and architecture descriptions: the W3C architecture note, the W3C WSDL 1.1 Note, published 15 March 2001, and the OASIS UDDI Version 3.0.2 specification. Their traditional grouping does not mean every web API requires all of them.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What is SOAP, and is it the same as HTTP?

SOAP is an extensible framework for packaging and exchanging XML messages. HTTP is one possible protocol for carrying an interaction. In other words, SOAP concerns the message framework; HTTP concerns how an exchange can be carried over a network. Calling an interaction “SOAP” does not, by itself, establish that it uses HTTP.

The W3C architecture note discusses SOAP messages carried over different network protocols and identifies HTTP as common in its description. Keep the layer distinction clear: a SOAP message can be transported using HTTP, but SOAP and HTTP are not synonyms.

How does WSDL describe a web service?

WSDL, the Web Services Description Language, describes the messages and operations a service exposes and connects those abstract descriptions to concrete protocols, formats, and endpoints. It is a description of how to interact with a service, not the message carrier or the interaction itself.

The WSDL 1.1 Note describes bindings for SOAP 1.1, HTTP GET/POST, and MIME. This illustrates why WSDL should not be treated as synonymous with SOAP: WSDL can express different bindings. A client can use a WSDL description to understand the expected interface and how it is bound to a particular endpoint.

What is UDDI used for?

UDDI specifies services for describing and discovering service providers, the services they offer, and technical interfaces for accessing them. It addresses the question of how a provider or service interface can be found. It does not define a message format or carry a client’s request, and the cited specification does not make UDDI a requirement for every web service.

What does REST mean in web services?

REST is an architectural style centered on resources identified by URIs, representations of those resources, a uniform interface, and stateless interactions. A representation is the information exchanged about a resource; REST is not itself a particular serialization such as JSON, nor is it a transport protocol.

SOAP and REST describe different aspects of a design and are not necessarily mutually exclusive labels in every implementation. The W3C architecture note says SOAP can be used in a REST-consistent way or in a way that is not REST-consistent. So the useful question is not only “SOAP or REST?” but also what interaction model, message framework, interface description, and transport a system uses.

How do the pieces fit together?

In a traditional standards-based design, WSDL can describe the messages and operations; SOAP can package a message; HTTP or another protocol can carry it; and UDDI can help with discovery of a provider or interface. A REST-style design instead emphasizes resource identifiers, representations, and uniform interaction semantics. These are possible roles in an architecture, not a mandatory stack every web service must adopt.

How should you compare web-service designs?

For a specific system, compare the actual requirements and choices across these dimensions rather than treating SOAP and REST as complete, directly interchangeable stacks:

  • Interaction model: Does the design invoke named operations, or work with resources through uniform semantics?
  • Message framework and representation: Does it use SOAP, and what representation or serialization does it exchange?
  • Interface description: Is the interface machine-described, and does that description specify protocol and format bindings?
  • Transport: Does the interaction use HTTP or another carrier?
  • Discovery: Must clients locate providers or interfaces through a discovery mechanism?
  • Operational needs: Assess security, reliability, compatibility, scale, and available tooling for the concrete deployment. The cited standards sources explain concepts; they do not establish a current performance comparison or a best choice for a new system.

The W3C and OASIS documents cited here are foundational standards and architecture references, published in 2001, 2004, and as UDDI Version 3.0.2. They explain the concepts but do not establish present-day adoption levels, product support, or which design is preferable for a particular project.
