Choose a scraping API when you need more than a different IP. A basic proxy API routes HTTP requests through provider-managed addresses. A web-scraping or web-unblocking API may also rotate IPs, target a country or city, execute JavaScript, adapt fingerprints, retry failures, handle anti-bot challenges and return structured data. For geo-sensitive collection, validate the exact location granularity, proxy type, session behavior and target-site response before committing to a provider.

This guide explains the difference, compares Zyte, Oxylabs and Bright Data using their documented capabilities, shows a provider-neutral implementation pattern, and covers reliability, cost, compliance and troubleshooting.

Proxy API or scraping API: what are you buying?

The term proxy API is used for two different products. A proxy-only service gives your code an HTTP endpoint or proxy gateway. You send a URL, credentials and proxy settings; the service supplies an exit IP and returns the target response. Your application remains responsible for JavaScript, cookies, retries, pacing, browser fingerprints, CAPTCHA outcomes and parsing.

A scraping API adds some or all of those functions. It can render a page, discover an unblocking strategy, rotate addresses, retry requests and extract fields into JSON. “API” does not guarantee that every target works, nor that every plan includes every capability. Read the provider’s target, location, rendering and billing documentation for the endpoint you intend to use.

Layer What it normally does Work left to your application
Proxy-only API Routes a request through a selected or rotating IP; may expose country or session controls. Rendering, browser behavior, challenge handling, parsing, retries, rate control and data validation.
Web-unblocking API Combines proxying with adaptive retries, fingerprint or request-pattern changes and often JavaScript execution. Choosing fields, validating content, respecting target rules and handling cases the service cannot solve.
Web-scraper API May add browser rendering, site connectors and structured extraction on top of proxying and unblocking. Schema checks, downstream storage, deduplication, monitoring and legal review.

How geo-targeting actually works

Geo-targeting asks the provider to make a request appear to originate from a specified place. The supported precision differs by product.

Country targeting

Country selection is the most common control. It is useful when a site changes currency, language, catalog or availability by national IP ranges. Country selection does not guarantee that the page will use that language or show the same inventory: sites can also use account, cookie, browser-language or address signals.

City and coordinate targeting

Oxylabs documents country, city and coordinate targeting for Web Unblocker, and location parameters for its Web Scraper API. City or coordinate controls are valuable for local search, delivery estimates and regional offers, but ask whether the inventory is residential or datacenter and how the provider maps coordinates to an actual exit address.

Residential versus datacenter exits

Datacenter addresses are generally easier to provision and can be efficient for permitted public collection. Residential addresses may more closely resemble consumer traffic but can have different availability, controls and pricing. Treat the proxy type as a separate comparison field; “country available” alone is not enough.

Sticky sessions and rotation

Rotation changes the exit address between requests. A sticky session keeps an address for a period so that cookies, carts or multi-step pages remain consistent. Confirm the session key, maximum duration and failure behavior in the selected API. Switching addresses mid-workflow can invalidate a login-free session or produce mixed regional results.

Unblocking and JavaScript rendering

Managed systems attempt to absorb operational work that a do-it-yourself scraper would otherwise implement: request pacing, retries, IP rotation, fingerprint adaptation, CAPTCHA or anti-bot handling and browser execution. Zyte describes dynamic adjustment of request patterns, proxies and fingerprinting. Oxylabs describes AI-powered unblocking and support for JavaScript-heavy sites. These are vendor descriptions, not an independent cross-provider benchmark; test representative URLs before promising coverage or a success rate.

When rendering is necessary

  • Use a browser-capable product when the initial HTML is only an application shell and content appears after JavaScript runs.
  • Use a non-rendering request when the target exposes complete server-rendered HTML or a documented data endpoint; it is usually simpler to validate and less resource-intensive.
  • For infinite scroll, wait for a selector or a network-idle condition and cap the wait so one broken page cannot consume a worker indefinitely.

Anti-bot outcomes are not binary

A response can be a normal page, a consent wall, a login page, a challenge, an empty result, a timeout or a provider-generated error. Store the HTTP status, final URL, response length, content markers and provider verdict where available. A 200 response is not proof that the requested data was returned.

Provider and product Documented strengths Questions to answer before purchase
Zyte API Adaptive unblocking, automatic proxy rotation, extraction, browser or rendering choices and compliance guardrails. Does your target and data type fit Zyte’s restrictions? Is usage pricing predictable at your required volume? Which browser and extraction options are included?
Oxylabs Web Scraper API / Web Unblocker Country, city and coordinate targeting, automatic rotation, JavaScript support and public-web collection tooling. What location precision, success reporting, session behavior and billing model apply to your endpoint?
Bright Data Web Scraper API / SERP / Unlocker APIs Structured extraction, SERP data, automated proxying and geo-targeted retrieval across many sites; its product page states coverage of more than 800 sites. Is pay-per-result economical for your workload? Which target connectors, output schemas and compliance controls are included?

No independent cross-provider benchmark establishes a universal winner for success rate, latency or total cost. A provider that works well for one target can fail or cost more on another.

Decision framework for a geo-targeted project

  1. Define the result. Record the exact URL patterns, fields, freshness, acceptable stale data and whether you need HTML, rendered DOM, screenshots or structured JSON.
  2. Define geography. Specify country, city or coordinates; required language and timezone; residential or datacenter preference; and whether one IP must persist across a session.
  3. Classify the target. Note JavaScript rendering, consent dialogs, login requirements, rate limits, challenge pages and robots.txt instructions.
  4. Run a representative pilot. Use URLs from each country and page type, including known empty, redirected and challenge cases. Measure valid-result rate, not merely HTTP success.
  5. Calculate cost per successful result. Include failed attempts, rendering time, retries, bandwidth, extraction charges and your own browser or queue infrastructure. A low request price can be expensive if many responses are unusable.
  6. Check observability and contracts. Confirm request IDs, response headers, usage reporting, retention, authentication, privacy terms, support escalation and permitted targets.

Provider-neutral implementation pattern

Each vendor uses its own endpoint and parameter names. The examples below are deliberately explicit about the values you must map to the provider’s current documentation. Set SCRAPER_API_URL and SCRAPER_API_KEY in your environment; do not hard-code secrets. Replace parameter names such as country, city and render_js if your account uses different labels.

cURL request

curl --fail-with-body -G "$SCRAPER_API_URL"
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SCRAPER_API_KEY"
  --data-urlencode "url=https://example.com/catalog"
  --data-urlencode "country=de"
  --data-urlencode "city=berlin"
  --data-urlencode "render_js=true"
  --data-urlencode "session=product-check-001"
  -o response.json

If the service expects an access-key query parameter, use that documented authentication method instead of the Authorization header. Never put a live key in a public repository or client-side browser code.

response.raise_for_status()
content_type = response.headers.get("content-type", "")
if "json" in content_type:

else:

    if len(body) < 200:
        raise RuntimeError("Unexpectedly short response; inspect for a challenge or error")
    print(body[:500])

Node.js with an abort timeout

const apiUrl = process.env.SCRAPER_API_URL;
const apiKey = process.env.SCRAPER_API_KEY;
if (!apiUrl || !apiKey) throw new Error('Set SCRAPER_API_URL and SCRAPER_API_KEY');

const u = new URL(apiUrl);
u.searchParams.set('url', 'https://example.com/catalog');
u.searchParams.set('country', 'de');
u.searchParams.set('city', 'berlin');
u.searchParams.set('render_js', 'true');
u.searchParams.set('session', 'product-check-001');

const controller = new AbortController();
const timer = setTimeout(() => controller.abort(), 90000);
try {
  const res = await fetch(u, {
    headers: { Authorization: `Bearer ${apiKey}` },
    signal: controller.signal
  });
  const text = await res.text();
  if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}: ${text.slice(0, 300)}`);
  console.log(text);
} finally {
  clearTimeout(timer);
}

Production safeguards

  • Use a bounded queue and exponential backoff for provider 429 and transient 5xx responses.
  • Keep idempotent request IDs so retries do not duplicate stored records.
  • Record requested and observed geography, final URL, status, latency, response size and a content-quality verdict.
  • Cache only when the target's freshness requirements and terms permit it. Cache keys should include URL, location, session and relevant language or device settings.
  • Separate challenge, empty and timeout outcomes from valid zero-result pages; they require different retry or review policies.

Cost, performance and reliability

Compare successful data, not raw requests

Ask each provider how a rendered request, failed request, retry and extracted result are billed. Compute total spend ÷ validated records for each target and geography. Include your own engineering time and browser capacity when comparing a proxy-only API with a managed scraper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control latency deliberately

Rendering, residential routing, retries and distant geographic exits add time. Use the shortest wait that reliably exposes the required selector, avoid rendering for server-rendered pages, and run independent URLs concurrently within the provider's limits. Set separate connect and overall read timeouts so a stalled browser does not occupy a worker forever.

Design for regional drift

IP geolocation databases change. A city request can resolve to a nearby locality, and a target can change its regional rules without notice. Periodically verify the apparent region using a harmless target-controlled check, then sample the actual business page you care about.

Troubleshooting common failures

HTTP 401 or 403 from the provider

Check the key, account status, authorization scheme and allowed source IPs. A target-site 403 is a different event; preserve the provider request ID and inspect the returned body before retrying.

The page is in the wrong country

Confirm that the location parameter is supported for the exact product, that the selected city is available, and that cookies, language, timezone or account settings are not overriding IP-based localization. Test the final URL and page content, not only an IP lookup.

HTML contains a challenge or consent wall

Enable the provider's documented browser or unblocking mode, allow enough wait time for JavaScript, and detect challenge markers before parsing. Do not loop indefinitely; classify the result and escalate or stop according to your target policy.

JavaScript data never appears

Wait for a stable selector or network-idle event, verify that required resource types are not blocked, and check whether the site needs a session cookie. If the endpoint is proxy-only, move to a browser-capable product or supply your own controlled browser.

429, timeouts or intermittent empty responses

Reduce concurrency, add jittered exponential backoff, reuse a sticky session where appropriate and cap retries. Compare response length and content markers so an empty successful response is not silently stored as data.

Parsing breaks after a site change

Version your selectors and schema, retain a small redacted sample for regression tests, and alert on field-level completeness. A proxy provider can deliver the page successfully while your extractor still fails.

Compliance and responsible use

RFC 9309 defines the Robots Exclusion Protocol and requests that crawlers honor rules published at /robots.txt. The standard also states: “These rules are not a form of access authorization.” A robots file is therefore one operational signal, not a complete legal answer.

Review laws and contracts applicable to your location, the target, the data and the people represented in it. Oxylabs advises legal review where collection could violate applicable rules. Zyte describes compliance guardrails that restrict login mechanisms and exclude personally identifiable and copyrighted data points from automatic extraction. Obtain permission for authenticated or non-public areas, minimize personal data, secure credentials and provide deletion or retention controls where required.

If your actual deliverable is a clean screenshot or PDF rather than extracted records, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API. It accepts a URL, handles consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a proxy API guarantee a specific city's content?

No. City precision depends on the provider's available exit addresses and the target's own localization logic. Validate the page result, not just the requested city parameter.

Should I use one rotating IP per request or a sticky session?

Use rotation for independent pages when address diversity matters; use a sticky session for multi-step, cookie-dependent workflows. Follow the provider's documented session limits.

Is a 200 status code proof that scraping succeeded?

No. A challenge, consent page or empty shell can also return 200. Check content markers, expected fields and response quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do robots.txt rules make collection legal?

No. RFC 9309 says robots rules are not access authorization. They belong in your compliance process, alongside contracts, privacy obligations and applicable law.

When is a screenshot API preferable to a scraping API?

Use a screenshot API when the output is a visual PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Use a scraping API when you need structured fields or page data for downstream processing.
