A quotes scraper is a good first project: Scrapy’s official tutorial uses the practice site Quotes to Scrape to collect quote text, authors, and tags, then demonstrates following pages and exporting records. Once that works, try a book catalogue, a public table, an RSS digest, or an API-backed weather logger.
Choose a project that teaches one new skill
These ideas are ordered from straightforward page extraction to projects involving more sources, history, or monitoring. They are suggestions, not promises about how long a project will take. For each one, define a small output before adding features: a few useful fields, a file you can inspect, and a README documenting what you collected.
1. Quotes and tags scraper
Use the practice site in Scrapy’s official tutorial, Quotes to Scrape. Extract the quote text, author, and tags into structured records, then count the most common tags. This exercises selectors, loops, data structure, and—after the first page works—pagination.
Keep the first version to one page. Check that each record has the fields you expect, then follow the next-page link and compare the combined output. Scrapy’s tutorial demonstrates this progression, including recursively following a next link and exporting items.

2. Book catalogue to CSV
Collect a small set of catalogue fields from a practice site, such as title, price, rating, and stock status. Normalize the values rather than saving whatever text happens to appear: prices should be numeric values in a consistent currency representation, and ratings should use a consistent scale. A useful next step is a grouped summary or chart.
3. Public table to chart
Pick one public HTML table and turn it into a chart. Before interpreting the chart, record who produced the table, what its units mean, and when it was last updated. The extraction may be simple; understanding the provenance and limitations of the data is part of the project.

4. RSS headline digest
Combine permitted RSS feeds into a daily or weekly digest. Parse publication dates, deduplicate items, and save or display the results. If a feed provides the information you need, use it instead of scraping page markup: feeds are intended to expose updates in a structured form.
5. Weather history logger
Use an appropriate public API to collect dated weather observations, store them, and plot a short time series. This is a data-ingestion project rather than necessarily a web-scraping project; labeling it accurately helps you choose the right techniques and describe what you built.

6. Stretch: change monitor or reusable crawler
For a change monitor, work on a site you own or are explicitly allowed to monitor. Record a modest set of changes and avoid turning the project into frequent public alerts. Another stretch goal is a multi-page Scrapy spider that validates records and writes to persistent storage.
Pick the lightest tool that fits the source
First ask whether the data is already available through a suitable API, open-data source, or RSS feed. If not, choose a tool based on how the page delivers its content and how much crawling the project needs.

Scrapy is not necessary just because a project involves scraping. For a single static page, a small Requests and Beautiful Soup script may be enough; use a crawler framework when following pages, reusing spiders, exporting structured data, or controlling request behavior is valuable.
Build the project in small, verifiable steps
- Define the question and fields. Write down what you want to learn and the exact fields needed to answer it. Avoid collecting unrelated data.
- Choose a suitable source. Check the site’s terms and stated crawling preferences. Look for an API, open dataset, or feed that provides the information directly.
- Fetch one page and test extraction. Inspect the page structure, select the fields, and verify a few records before adding pagination or more sources.
- Normalize and handle missing values. Make dates, numbers, whitespace, and categories consistent. Decide explicitly how an absent value will be represented.
- Export and validate. Save a small CSV or JSON file, then check row counts, duplicate records, and missing fields. Scrapy supports feed exports in JSON, CSV, and XML formats.
- Add only useful extensions. Add a chart, history, schedule, or alert only if it answers a real question beyond the initial dataset.
- Document the result. In a short README, identify the source, collection date, fields, output format, and limitations.

Be considerate of the source
Use a practice site, an approved source, or data that is meant to be accessed programmatically. Keep request volume low and identify your crawler honestly. Scrapy’s tutorial recommends setting a user agent so site owners can contact you; it suggests a project name plus a URL or email address. Scrapy also documents download-delay and per-domain concurrency settings, as well as robots.txt support. These are practical controls, not a guarantee that a crawl complies with every site’s terms or applicable law.

Should I learn web scraping with Scrapy or Beautiful Soup?
For a few static pages, Requests with Beautiful Soup is a reasonable starting point. Choose Scrapy when reusable spiders, page following, structured exports, or crawl controls are part of the learning goal.
Does a weather logger count as a web-scraping project?
Not necessarily. If it collects observations through an API, it is more accurately described as a data-ingestion project.
