Improve web performance by finding the bottleneck before changing code: use real-user data to identify which pages and devices struggle, reproduce a representative URL in browser tools, inspect the slow part of the load or interaction, make a targeted change, and measure again. Core Web Vitals track loading, responsiveness, and visual stability; their good-experience targets are LCP of 2.5 seconds or less, INP under 200 milliseconds, and CLS under 0.1.
What web performance means in practice
Google describes Core Web Vitals as metrics for real-world loading performance, interactivity, and visual stability. The three metrics are useful starting points, but they describe different user problems and need separate diagnoses.
| Metric | What it measures | Good target |
|---|---|---|
| LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) | How long it takes the largest visible image, text block, or video to render. | 2.5 seconds or less at the 75th percentile, assessed separately for mobile and desktop. |
| INP (Interaction to Next Paint) | How quickly the page responds visually after user interactions. | Under 200 milliseconds. |
| CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) | Unexpected movement of visible page content. | Under 0.1. |
Google recommends good Core Web Vitals for user experience and search success, and says they align with what its core ranking systems seek to reward. Meeting a threshold does not guarantee a ranking increase. Google’s Core Web Vitals guidance explains the metrics and targets.
Start with real-user data, then reproduce the problem
Find the affected metric, device, and URL group
In Google Search Console, open the Core Web Vitals report and inspect mobile and desktop separately. The report uses CrUX field data from actual Chrome users and groups similar URLs. A group’s status reflects its slowest metric when sufficient data is available; some groups may not appear if there is not enough data. Search Console classifies LCP as good at 2.5 seconds or less, needs improvement through 4 seconds, and poor above 4 seconds. For INP, the boundaries are 200 and 500 milliseconds; for CLS they are 0.1 and 0.25. Google’s report documentation describes the group and status methodology.

Test one representative URL
Use PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse to test a specific URL and review its diagnostics. Keep the test’s device conditions in mind and compare the lab result with the field outcome. A single lab run is not the same thing as the field status for a group of URLs: field LCP can include connection setup and other delays that a lab run does not represent in the same way. Treat the lab report as a way to reproduce and investigate, not as a substitute for real-user results.
Inspect the trace or request waterfall
Look for slow initial HTML or time to first byte (TTFB), late discovery of the main image or font, large transfers, stylesheets or scripts that block rendering, and main-thread work that postpones paint. Chrome DevTools’ Performance panel and its render-blocking insight can help identify requests that delay first render and potentially LCP. Chrome’s render-blocking guidance explains what to inspect.

Fix the bottleneck that the evidence points to
When LCP is slow, identify which part consumes the time
LCP consists of four sequential components: TTFB, resource load delay, resource load duration, and element render delay. Together they account for the LCP timing. The largest-looking image is not necessarily the whole problem; determine which component is consuming time before optimizing. web.dev’s LCP optimization guide gives a diagnostic breakdown.
- High TTFB: Investigate server response and delivery. Frontend work cannot begin until the browser receives the first HTML byte.
- Late resource discovery: Make the LCP image discoverable in the initial HTML where possible. If it is a CSS background image, consider an appropriate preload. Avoid lazy-loading the above-the-fold LCP image, and use priority hints selectively.
- Long transfer duration: If transfer time is the measured bottleneck, reduce image bytes, use a suitable efficient format such as WebP or AVIF, and deliver a responsive image sized for the viewport without sacrificing needed visual quality.
- Long render delay: Reduce or defer non-critical CSS and JavaScript. Ensure the LCP element is present and visible without waiting for unnecessary client-side work; synchronous scripts in the document head can delay rendering.
When CSS or JavaScript delays first paint
Defer requests that are not needed for first paint, keep critical inline requests small, and limit CSS and scripts to what the initial view requires. Inlining CSS is an advanced option, not a default fix: it can introduce bugs and should be used only when the page architecture and testing support it. Chrome’s performance insight covers render-blocking requests.

When repeat visits remain slow
Review the site’s Cache-Control policy so repeat resource requests can be served from cache where appropriate. Balance caching duration against content freshness and how quickly updates must reach visitors.
When INP or CLS is the problem
Use field data to establish that responsiveness or visual stability is the failing metric, then reproduce the relevant interaction or page behavior in a lab trace. Inspect the main thread for work that delays a response when INP is poor; inspect when and where visible elements move when CLS is poor. The available guidance establishes these metrics and thresholds, but does not identify a universal fix for every INP or CLS issue. Avoid changing unrelated assets just because they are easy to optimize.

Validate changes without confusing lab and field results
- Record the affected URL or URL group, metric, device category, field status, and the lab test conditions before changing anything.
- Change one likely cause at a time so you can associate a result with the intervention.
- Repeat the same lab test and inspect the trace or waterfall to confirm the intended component changed.
- Check field data as it becomes available. A faster lab run does not by itself establish that real users or every URL in a group improved.
For example, shrinking an image can reduce its transfer time but may not reduce total LCP if the image remains undiscovered until late or is hidden while client-side code runs. web.dev’s LCP overview discusses field measurement and the 75th-percentile target.
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Search Console and Lighthouse disagree: They describe different evidence: grouped field data versus a specific lab test. Compare metric, device, and test conditions rather than expecting identical numbers.
- An optimization does not move LCP: Check all four LCP components. The change may have improved a non-dominant component while discovery or rendering still controls the total.
- A page looks fast on a developer’s computer: That does not establish how it performs for users on other devices and connections. Use field data segmented by device.
- Inlining or deferring breaks page behavior: These changes can alter styling or script timing. Test the affected page behavior as well as its performance, and keep critical inline content small.
- A URL has no Search Console status: The report may not have sufficient field data for that group. Use a representative URL in PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse while recognizing that a lab result does not create field data.
Choose an implementation by fit, not by label
When considering an implementation change or delivery service, first match it to the measured bottleneck: server response and delivery for TTFB, markup or preload behavior for discovery, image handling for transfer, or CSS and JavaScript behavior for render delay. Then consider platform compatibility, access to code and server settings, implementation risk, ongoing operating cost, and whether the expected result can be verified in field data rather than only a lab audit. A CDN, image-delivery service, or managed hosting change may be relevant when delivery is the problem, but it is not a universal performance fix.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a good Core Web Vitals score guarantee better search rankings?
No. Google recommends good Core Web Vitals and says they align with what its core ranking systems seek to reward, but a particular score does not guarantee a ranking increase.
Why can my lab LCP differ from the Search Console result?
Search Console reports grouped real-user field data, while a lab test measures a specific URL under test conditions. Field LCP can include connection setup and other delays that a lab measurement does not represent in the same way.
