Choose SingleFile if you want a standalone HTML file to open offline in a browser. Choose Evernote Web Clipper if you want to save web content as an organized, searchable Evernote note. The better option depends on whether your archive is a portable file or a notebook you can search and manage.
How the two tools archive a page
SingleFile saves a self-contained HTML file
SingleFile is a browser extension that saves a web page and its resources—including images, stylesheets, fonts, and frames—as one HTML file. Its project says saved pages can be opened offline in a browser without the extension installed. It also lists features for selecting and annotating content, automatic saving, batch URL saving, saving bookmarked pages, and sending pages to services such as GitHub, Amazon S3, Google Drive, or WebDAV. SingleFile is free and open source under the AGPL license. See the SingleFile project for its current feature and browser information.
Evernote Web Clipper saves a note in Evernote
Evernote Web Clipper captures material into Evernote, where the saved note includes the page content and URL and can be searched. Evernote says search can include text in images. The clipper offers several formats, so you can choose between extracting text, keeping a static copy of the page, or saving a visual capture. The available formats and their descriptions are in Evernote’s clip formats documentation.

Which Evernote clip format should you use?
Evernote’s formats are not interchangeable: some prioritize readable text, while others retain more of the page’s design or save a visual record.

- Article: extracts the page’s main section.
- Simplified Article: removes layout and formatting for a pared-down reading copy.
- Multi-Select: combines page sections you choose.
- Selection: saves selected text or images.
- Full page: keeps a static copy that retains the page’s design and navigation.
- Screenshot: saves a static visual capture.
- Bookmark: saves the URL, a thumbnail, and a snippet.
- PDF: captures a PDF attachment.

Set up Web Clipper or SingleFile
Install and configure the extension
Both products are browser extensions, but supported browsers and available clip types can vary. SingleFile lists Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Firefox for Android, and Safari apps. Evernote’s Quick Start Guide names Chrome, Safari, and Firefox, while its settings documentation discusses Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and legacy Internet Explorer support. Check the relevant extension store and current documentation for your browser before installing; do not assume every format is available everywhere.

For Evernote, the settings page lets you configure a default clip mode and notebook or tag behavior. Evernote notes that settings can vary by browser. See Evernote Web Clipper settings for current details. SingleFile’s project page describes its extension and additional save options.
Test the pages you need to preserve
- Choose a representative page, including any site with a complex layout, media, or interactive elements.
- Capture it using the format or extension you expect to use regularly.
- For SingleFile, open the saved HTML file offline in a browser and check whether the material you need is present.
- For Evernote, open the saved note and confirm that the content, URL, and organization are right for your archive.
- If the result is incomplete or hard to read, try another Evernote format or select the relevant content manually, then compare the result with the original page.
Limits to keep in mind
Evernote warns that complex designs, interactive content, and multimedia can cause clipping problems or produce results that look different from the original. Its suggested remedies are to try another clip mode, select content manually, or use a screenshot. See its Web Clipper troubleshooting guidance.

A saved HTML file or note should not be treated as a guarantee that a site’s scripts, video, or interactive behavior will work offline. The tools’ documented formats describe ways to save page content or appearance; they do not establish that every dynamic feature survives archiving. If exact appearance matters, a screenshot or PDF-like visual record serves a different purpose from searchable text or a self-contained HTML file.

For a page you want to keep as a file and open offline, start with SingleFile. For material you want to organize and retrieve through Evernote, use Web Clipper and pick the format that suits the page. Try the actual pages you plan to save: the choice between extracted text, a static copy, and a visual capture matters as much as the tool.
