Choose WeasyPrint when you need a paginated PDF; choose wkhtmltoimage when you need an image capture. They are not interchangeable screenshot engines: WeasyPrint is an HTML/CSS renderer oriented toward document and print output, while wkhtmltoimage is a headless command-line tool that renders HTML to image formats with Qt WebKit. Neither should be assumed to match a current mainstream browser, especially for JavaScript-heavy pages or modern CSS. The right choice depends first on the file you need, then on whether your actual pages render correctly and safely with that tool.

At a glance: PDF or image?

Question WeasyPrint wkhtmltoimage
Primary output PDF from HTML and CSS Image capture; documented formats include JPG, PNG, BMP and SVG
JavaScript Does not execute JavaScript Has settings for enabling JavaScript and delaying capture; this does not establish modern-browser compatibility
Rendering model Dedicated HTML/CSS renderer with print and PDF capabilities Uses Qt WebKit
Best initial fit Structured, paginated documents where print layout and PDF features matter Existing workflows that need image captures and have been checked against its rendering behavior
Freshness signal in official project material reviewed Version 70.0 is listed as released September 8, 2026 Version 0.12.6 is identified as the stable series, released June 11, 2020

These are product and documentation differences, not results from a controlled speed or visual-fidelity test. Your templates, fonts, assets, operating system and exact installed build can change the practical outcome.

How their rendering approaches differ

WeasyPrint: HTML and CSS composed as a document

WeasyPrint is designed to turn HTML and CSS into PDF. Its API documentation describes support across many CSS specifications, while also listing unsupported areas; it should not be treated as a complete browser engine. Its PDF-specific capabilities include hyperlinks, bookmarks, attachments and forms. Those features make it a natural candidate when the output is meant to be read, printed, archived or navigated as a document rather than used as a screenshot.

WeasyPrint does not run page JavaScript. A page whose final content depends on a script—for example, a client-side app that fills in a chart after loading—may therefore produce incomplete output. A delay cannot make a non-executing renderer run that script. Prepare HTML with the necessary content already present, or choose a rendering approach that executes the required JavaScript.

wkhtmltoimage: a page capture rendered by Qt WebKit

wkhtmltoimage is a headless command-line HTML-to-image tool. Its image settings document choices such as output format, screen width, crop coordinates and dimensions, PNG/SVG transparency, smart-width behavior and JPEG quality. Its page-loading settings include a JavaScript enable switch and a delay setting. These controls can help with a page that needs time to settle, but they do not turn Qt WebKit into a current browser engine.

Use the image-specific documentation for wkhtmltoimage rather than assuming every setting shared across the wkhtmltopdf project applies to this executable. The documentation notes that some settings have no effect for wkhtmltoimage. Confirm the behavior of the exact build you deploy, especially if a workflow depends on a less common option.

Which one should you choose?

Choose WeasyPrint for paginated PDF output

  • Your required artifact is a PDF, not a raster screenshot.
  • Your layout is primarily HTML and CSS, and does not rely on JavaScript to create essential page content.
  • You need document-oriented features such as links, bookmarks, attachments or forms.
  • You can validate the resulting PDF against the needs of your readers and publishing workflow.

WeasyPrint documentation also describes PDF/A and PDF/UA generation, but cautions that conformance is not guaranteed. If an accessibility or archival standard is a requirement, inspect and validate the generated file; do not infer conformance merely from choosing a supported output option.

Choose wkhtmltoimage when an image is the intended artifact

  • Your application needs a JPG, PNG, BMP or SVG capture.
  • Your pages render acceptably in the Qt WebKit-based tool you plan to ship.
  • Its width, crop, transparency or image-quality controls fit your capture requirements.
  • You have checked the target binary’s age, operating-system compatibility and security posture.

The project download page identifies 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020, as the stable series. That date is a reason to review deployment risk and package support, not proof that a particular binary is unavailable or unusable. Builds may differ, and the download material notes that some features require patched Qt. Check the package and platform you will actually deploy.

Choose neither by assumption if current-browser behavior is essential

If your output must reflect modern JavaScript, current CSS behavior or pixel-level parity with a present-day browser, test a representative alternative based on a currently maintained browser automation stack. The reviewed documentation for these two tools does not support assuming current-browser parity. Keep the distinction clear: wkhtmltoimage exposes JavaScript-related loading settings, but that alone is not evidence that it supports modern web applications as a current browser does.

How to evaluate them before committing

There is no universal winner based on the documented feature lists, and no controlled comparison establishes which is faster or more faithful. Run a small acceptance test with the pages that matter to your project. Use the same HTML, assets, fonts, viewport assumptions and output requirements for each candidate; judge the delivered artifact rather than a successful process exit alone.

  1. Write down the required output. Decide whether you need a multipage PDF or a single-page image, which image formats are acceptable, and whether links, bookmarks, transparency, crop behavior or page breaks matter.
  2. Select representative inputs. Include a simple page, a long document, a page with external images and fonts, a page with complex CSS, and any page whose content is created by JavaScript. Use real production templates, not just a minimal demo.
  3. Check content completeness. Compare text, image loading, navigation, page breaks, clipping and margins. For WeasyPrint, test whether required content exists without JavaScript. For wkhtmltoimage, check the actual output format and capture dimensions as well as page appearance.
  4. Exercise failure cases. Test slow or unavailable external resources, invalid markup, missing fonts and unusually long pages. Record whether the tool fails, emits a partial file or produces a result that looks valid but is incomplete.
  5. Measure your own workload. Time repeated captures with the same pages and deployment conditions, and watch memory and concurrency behavior. No performance comparison is established here, so use your own representative workload rather than importing a speed claim.
  6. Repeat on the deployment platform. Test the exact package and operating system intended for production. A result on a developer workstation does not establish that the production binary, Qt build, fonts or resource access will behave identically.
  7. Review security and maintenance. Restrict what HTML can request and what local files or network resources the renderer can access. Pin and track the selected package, and revisit updates and advisories as part of maintenance.

Security: treat the HTML as an input boundary

Both projects’ documentation makes input security material. The wkhtmltopdf download page explicitly warns against using the tool with untrusted HTML. WeasyPrint’s use-case material flags security problems involving untrusted HTML and CSS. A renderer that accepts a URL or document can be exposed to malicious markup, external-resource requests or access to resources available to the rendering process.

For either tool, accept only inputs appropriate to your trust model. Validate or sanitize submitted content, restrict network egress and local-file access, and avoid running a renderer with unnecessary privileges. Consider external images, stylesheets, fonts and URL fetchers as part of the boundary: they can affect both what is rendered and what the process is allowed to retrieve. Keep renderer updates in your security maintenance plan; WeasyPrint’s changelog lists version 70.0 on September 8, 2026 as a security update and recommends upgrading in specified cases involving untrusted embedded images or URL fetchers. Check the live project changelog and release information when deploying.

Common problems and practical fixes

The PDF or image is missing dynamic content

First determine whether the content is generated by JavaScript. WeasyPrint does not execute JavaScript, so a wait period is not a remedy; provide completed HTML or use a renderer that runs the page’s scripts. With wkhtmltoimage, confirm JavaScript loading settings and test whether the page’s specific scripts work with the deployed Qt WebKit build. A JavaScript switch or delay setting does not guarantee compatibility with modern frameworks.

The output looks different from the browser

Do not use browser appearance as an assumed baseline for either engine. Identify the smallest mismatch—font, CSS feature, viewport width, crop or page break—and reduce the test page until you can isolate it. WeasyPrint documents broad but not complete CSS support; wkhtmltoimage uses Qt WebKit. If exact contemporary browser rendering is a hard requirement, move the test to a current-browser automation option rather than accumulating workarounds around an unverified engine.

Images, fonts or styles are absent

Check whether each resource is reachable from the renderer’s environment, whether its URL is valid, and whether the process is allowed to fetch it. Compare a local copy with the externally fetched asset to distinguish a rendering problem from a network or access problem. Do not solve this by granting unrestricted filesystem or network access to untrusted input.

A wkhtmltoimage option appears to do nothing

Verify that the option is documented for wkhtmltoimage itself. The project documentation identifies settings that do not affect this executable, and some capabilities depend on patched Qt. Confirm the installed version and build before changing application code.

Performance, reliability and cost

The available project material does not establish a head-to-head benchmark, resource profile, uptime figure or universal reliability ranking for these tools. Rendering time depends on the input, page complexity, resources and environment; measure it on your own expected workload. For production, observe duration, memory use, incomplete outputs and failures under the concurrency you expect, then set limits appropriate to your service.

Cost is also deployment-specific: the reviewed material does not establish comparable license, hosting or maintenance totals for a particular use case. Account for the binary and runtime, operating-system support, security updates, operations work, and the engineering cost of fixing rendering differences. A free or familiar command-line tool is not automatically the lower-cost option if it requires significant maintenance or creates unacceptable security risk.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a screenshot or PDF from a URL rather than operating a renderer yourself, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of a URL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request parameters. The matching Python and Node.js forms are:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Keep the API key on the server side rather than exposing it in a public page. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
