Two unsolicited requests reached one unpublished Cloudflare Quick Tunnel hostname during a 13.8-hour test. The first arrived 74 minutes after startup. That is a useful snapshot—not a discovery-rate estimate, and not evidence that an exposed tunnel is safe.
The test’s server was deliberately inert, so the result says little about what an internet visitor could do to a real application. The more lasting lesson is about access: without a gate, anyone who obtains a Quick Tunnel URL can reach the local service behind it.
What the experiment did
DevOps Daily reported the experiment on September 22, 2026. The authors exposed a local server through a Cloudflare Quick Tunnel, using cloudflared as the route into a service listening on loopback. They describe the server as deliberately inert: it read no files, ran no commands, reflected no input, logged requests, and returned the same 404 response.

The test hostname was not published. During 13.8 hours, the authors recorded two unsolicited requests. Both were HEAD / requests from the same source, carried a desktop Chrome user agent, and were reported as originating in the United States. The first arrived 1 hour and 14 minutes after the tunnel started. The authors saw no requests for paths such as /.env, WordPress login pages, Git configuration, or actuator health endpoints. What turned up—and what that result means
Two requests, not a general discovery rate
This was one hostname, one setup, and a short observation window. Two requests in 13.8 hours do not establish how quickly tunnels are usually discovered, how often scanners target them, or what would happen over a longer period. The authors themselves describe the observation as thin and suggest that a week-long run or deliberately sharing the URL would answer different questions.
A fixed 404 is not a real application
Because the test service exposed no files or actions and returned a fixed 404, the requests did not test the defenses or contents of an actual development app. An application with debug information, private records, administrative actions, or credentials presents a different risk. The experiment cannot show that such a service would be ignored—or safe.

What is the actual risk of a Quick Tunnel?
The URL is a route to your local service, not an access-control mechanism. Cloudflare’s Quick Tunnels documentation says, “Anyone with the URL can access your local service.” That means a link shared with a colleague, posted in a ticket, or sent to a webhook provider should be treated as granting reachability unless you configure an access gate. Cloudflare’s Quick Tunnels documentation describes the current behavior.
Use a tunnel only for a development service whose data and actions are safe to make reachable. Avoid exposing private admin tools, production credentials, or sensitive databases through an ungated public URL. Share the link deliberately and stop the cloudflared process when the test is over.

Email PIN protection for shared testing
As announced October 2, 2026, Cloudflare offers an optional --allowed-mail flag for Quick Tunnels. It restricts access to designated email addresses using a one-time PIN; visitors do not need a Cloudflare account. The flow requires an interactive browser, so it may not suit non-interactive clients such as third-party webhook delivery. Quick Tunnel limits and intended use
Cloudflare’s documentation, last updated September 30, 2026, describes Quick Tunnels as temporary URLs on trycloudflare.com for exposing a local service without a Cloudflare account or domain. The hostname changes each time a Quick Tunnel is created, and the URL stops working when its cloudflared process stops. Cloudflare positions the feature for testing and development, not persistent production service.

For a persistent or production use case, follow Cloudflare’s current named-tunnel guidance rather than treating a disposable Quick Tunnel as a production endpoint.

The authors also sent 20 requests from a Frankfurt server to a Raspberry Pi on a domestic connection through the tunnel. They reported 188 ms at p50 and 399 ms at p95. These are measurements of that particular path and setup, not a Cloudflare latency guarantee. Their comparison with a production site behind the same CDN involved applications doing different amounts of work, so it does not isolate the tunnel’s performance. How to apply the finding
- Check what the local service can do. Do not make sensitive data, production secrets, or consequential actions reachable just because the server binds to loopback.
- Choose access based on the recipient. For a person using a browser, consider the documented email PIN option and verify it works for that visitor. For automated integrations, confirm that the required workflow is compatible; an interactive email challenge may block it.
- Limit the exposure window. Share the URL only with intended recipients and stop the tunnel when testing ends.
- Choose a durable setup for durable needs. A temporary Quick Tunnel has no uptime guarantee and has documented traffic and protocol limits; use Cloudflare’s named-tunnel guidance when the service needs persistence.
