Waze can use more of your phone’s power while you navigate because it needs location access and relies on GPS and an internet connection. Keeping the display on can add to that load. Waze does not publish a battery-use rate or evidence that it drains more power than other navigation apps, so there is no reliable per-hour figure or supported ranking.
Why Waze can use battery during a drive
Live navigation involves several functions that can draw power at the same time:
- Location and GPS: Waze requires access to your phone’s location to navigate. Its Android GPS guidance explains that location must be enabled and allowed for Waze.
- Internet connectivity: Waze uses a mobile connection as part of navigation. Its availability and cost guidance says continuous use can consume substantial mobile data, depending on factors such as route, trip length, traffic, reports, and active drivers. That statement concerns data use, not battery consumption.
- An illuminated display: Waze has a “Prevent auto-lock” setting that keeps the screen on. A screen that remains lit adds to the phone’s overall power load, although Waze does not quantify how much this setting contributes. Waze says the feature is not supported on Android Auto, Android Automotive, or CarPlay; see its always-on display guidance.
These functions explain why navigation can use power, but they are not a measured breakdown of Waze’s battery consumption. The available Waze guidance does not provide a battery-drain rate per hour or a controlled comparison with another navigation app.
Check whether Waze is still active after a trip
If the battery continues to fall after you stop navigating, check whether Waze is still active and review its location and background permissions. Waze Community users have reported the app remaining active after a trip or being swiped away, but individual reports do not establish that this is a common problem or diagnose what is happening on your phone.

- Check the app’s status. Look for Waze in your phone’s active or recently used apps. As a diagnostic step, fully exit it when you are not travelling and see whether the battery behavior changes. A community discussion includes this suggestion, but it is not a proven fix for every device.
- Review location access. Open your phone’s app settings for Waze and check its location permission. Menu names and paths vary by device and operating-system version; Waze notes this variation in its Android permission instructions.
- Review background activity. In a Waze Community discussion, a Product Expert suggested “While Using the App” location access and turning off Background App Refresh on iPhone, or restricting background activity on Android. This is community troubleshooting guidance, not official Waze policy. Restricting access may affect app behavior, including navigation or alerts.
A Waze Privacy Policy describes location and other information the app may collect, including in some circumstances in the background. That disclosure explains data practices; it is not evidence of battery consumption or a diagnosis of background drain. See the Waze Privacy Policy.
If Waze shows “No GPS”
A GPS warning is a location-function problem, not proof that Waze is causing unusual battery drain. Waze’s GPS troubleshooting guide recommends checking location permission, restarting the phone, and testing GPS. It also notes that Android Auto navigation depends on the phone’s GPS and internet connection.

Keep Waze running or limit it after navigation?

If you need live navigation, location access is required. If you do not, checking the app’s status and permissions is a reasonable way to investigate continued battery loss without assuming Waze is necessarily the cause.
Does Waze use more battery than Google Maps?
The available evidence does not establish whether Waze uses more battery than Google Maps, Apple Maps, or another navigation app. A meaningful ranking would require comparable measurements; results can depend on the phone, app version, settings, screen state, route, and reception. Treat claims of a universal winner or a fixed hourly drain rate with caution unless they identify how the comparison was measured.

What to do if your phone loses charge while driving
A compatible in-car charger can supply power during navigation, but it does not reduce Waze’s power draw or fix a background-activity issue. Check that the charger matches your phone’s connector and that your vehicle has a compatible power outlet.
