Start with the original webpage’s URL in the Wayback Machine, then check the capture you want. If the page loads but its video does not, look for the video’s own media URL and search for that URL in Wayback. An archived webpage does not guarantee that its video file was saved, and the Internet Archive does not document a universal way to download video embedded in a third-party archived page.
Find the archived webpage
- Open the Wayback Machine and enter the original webpage’s URL or domain.
- Choose an available capture from the calendar or capture list, then open it.
- Check the replay URL’s timestamp. Its digits use the format
yyyymmddhhmmss, which identifies the capture date and time. Not every date has a complete capture, so the page and its linked files may not all reflect the same moment. - Test the video player. If it works, the capture may let you watch the video, but that alone does not establish that the video file is downloadable.
Wayback searches for URLs and domains; it is not a full-text search engine for finding archived pages by words inside them. If you do not know the original page URL, you will need to find it elsewhere before using this workflow.
If the video is missing or will not play
A page and its media are separate resources. The page may have been captured while the video, scripts, or other assets were not. The Internet Archive’s troubleshooting guidance also notes that JavaScript-dependent pages and resources that need to contact the original server can fail during replay.
Recommended Free Tools
- Look for a direct video or media URL on the original page, in its links, or in the page’s player controls if they expose one.
- Enter that specific URL in Wayback and check whether it has its own capture. The Internet Archive recommends checking an individual asset URL when a linked image or file is unavailable.
- If there is no capture of the media URL, the archive may not have saved the video. A working page capture cannot substitute for a missing media file.
- If the replay appears to show a linked page or file, verify the replay URL and capture date. Wayback may use a nearby capture for a missing link or reach the live web when the requested link is absent from the archive.
Save Page Now does not solve this after the fact: it saves one page at a time, does not save outlinks, and does not start a full-site crawl. Capturing a page is not the same as capturing every video it references.

Know which download route applies
| What you found | What to do | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| A video embedded in a third-party webpage replayed by Wayback | Check the video’s media URL separately in Wayback, if you can identify it. | A separate media capture may exist, but an embedded player does not guarantee a downloadable file. The Internet Archive’s guidance does not specify a general download procedure for video payloads in third-party captures. |
| A video or other file on an Internet Archive item page | Open the item page and look for Download Options. | Some listed files can be downloaded, but the Internet Archive says that some files, collections, or formats are restricted. This is a separate workflow from Wayback replay. |
Do not treat an archive.org item’s Download Options as instructions for extracting a video from a Wayback capture. They apply to files offered on that item page.
Access and reuse are separate questions
Finding a capture does not by itself establish that you may download, share, or reuse its contents. The Internet Archive says it cannot guarantee that a site has been or will be archived, and its guidance describes using the service to locate and access archived versions of sites to which you own the rights. Check the relevant rights and permissions before reusing third-party video; archive availability alone does not settle them.
