Chris from Clickspring turns a home machine-shop project into a precision benchtop gyroscope: a spinning metal flywheel supported by a simple, adjustable cone bearing. Make’s two-part feature follows the build and explains the bearing choice, but it is a maker project—not a tested product review or a ready-made kit.
What the gyroscope build involves
In Make’s August 2015 project feature, Chris describes making a gyroscope intended to work as well as serve as a desktop ornament. The project uses metalworking techniques with a lathe and mill drill. Chris also notes that builders without the usual tools can use simpler techniques, though the articles do not detail a specific substitute workflow.
The design files are offered in both Imperial and Metric measurements. The feature does not name a required machine model or provide a ready-made kit; this is a build for people prepared to make the parts and source suitable materials. Why the bearing design matters
The follow-up article identifies the flywheel support as a simple cone bearing. Chris says this arrangement is straightforward to make, tolerates axial misalignment and flex, and allows adjustment of end shake—the small amount of axial movement in the rotating assembly. These are the maker’s design observations, not results from an independent bearing test.

Chris also notes that the cone bearing can wear over time, particularly when made from brass. He suggests high-carbon steel as an alternative for builders comfortable with quench hardening. The article does not give a quantified service life for either material.
Cone bearing or roller bearing?

What to expect from the feature
The project articles show how a precision home-shop object is made and explain a notable mechanical design decision. They do not report measured spin duration, exact dimensions, or independently verified performance figures. The first article’s description of “a pound of spinning metal” is project prose, not a general specification.
