Yes—but the Spanish TV you can watch outside Spain depends on the service, your country, and each program’s territorial rights. Start with official access: free RTVE Play, the international subscriptions RTVE Play+ or Atresplayer, or Movistar Plus if your Spanish account qualifies for travel access in one of its listed European countries. A VPN may work for some live channels, but a published test is only a snapshot, not a guarantee for your location or a particular program.
Why Spanish TV availability changes by country
Broadcasters license programs for particular territories. A service may load abroad while a specific film, episode, or live channel remains unavailable. RTVE says some content is restricted by territory; Atresmedia warns that rights limits can block titles even for international subscribers. Mediaset’s FAQ similarly indicates that its app can be accessed abroad while some programs remain geoblocked.
That distinction matters: access to an app or subscription does not necessarily mean access to its entire Spanish catalog. Check the specific service and title from your country before subscribing or travelling.
Official ways to watch Spanish TV abroad
RTVE Play: free live and on-demand programming
RTVE Play is the free route for live and on-demand programming, including series, films, documentaries, and other programs. RTVE says its app is available on mobile devices, tablets, computers, and smart TVs. Its FAQ notes that territorial restrictions apply to some content; depending on the title, an alternative catalog entry or international version may be available. RTVE Play+: a separate international subscription
RTVE Play+ is a paid international service, distinct from the free RTVE Play offering. It promotes an international premium catalog, monthly and annual subscriptions, and seven-day trials. Availability, catalog, and prices depend on region, so check the terms shown for your country. Movistar Plus while travelling in Europe
Movistar says customers who sign up in Spain can watch while travelling in 29 named European countries. Its listed countries are Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czechia, Croatia, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Liechtenstein, Iceland, and Norway. This is a travel option for eligible Spain-based customers, not a general international sign-up route. Verify current account eligibility and country coverage with Movistar before relying on it. Mitele and Mediaset
A Mediaset FAQ result says Mitele can be accessed outside Spain, but individual programs may still be geoblocked where Mediaset holds rights only for Spain. Because current service branding and help details may change, check Mediaset’s current support information for your country and program rather than assuming every Mitele title will play. What a published test of three VPNs found
Gizmodo’s guide, published September 29, 2026, reports a test conducted from Europe on Windows 11 using 5G mobile data. The tester recorded a 325.97 Mbps baseline and connected to Barcelona servers. In those tests, Gizmodo reports that NordVPN, Proton VPN, and ExpressVPN each unblocked live La 1, 24h, Telecinco, and Antena 3. These are Gizmodo’s results, not independent tests for this article. How to choose an option
- For a free starting point: try RTVE Play and check whether the specific live channel or on-demand title is available in your country.
- For an official international catalog: compare RTVE Play+ and Atresplayer’s international package, including regional availability and title restrictions.
- If you already subscribe to Movistar Plus in Spain: check whether your trip is to a country on Movistar’s current list and whether your account meets its travel-access requirements.
- If considering a VPN: treat the Gizmodo test as evidence that access worked in one setup at one time—not a promise of future access, availability in your country, or access to every program.
- For TV playback: use a device supported by the service, such as a compatible smart TV or streaming device. A Fire TV Stick can help display a supported app; it does not change territorial permissions or replace a subscription.
Can a VPN guarantee access?
No. A VPN may change the apparent location of your connection, and Gizmodo reported successful access to selected live channels through Barcelona servers in its test. Broadcasters can still restrict streams, VPN connections may be blocked, and rights can differ from one title to another. If playback fails, try the broadcaster’s official international or travel option, confirm the title’s availability in your location, and check the service’s current support guidance.
