Choose Watch Dogs if you want hacking connected city systems to shape how you scout, sneak, fight, and move through the world. Choose Grand Theft Auto V if you want a crime story centered on three protagonists and dangerous heists—or want a separate online mode alongside the story. Neither is an objective winner: the better fit depends on what you want from an open-world game.
How do the games differ?
They share an open-world setting, but their defining hooks are different. Ubisoft describes Watch Dogs around hacking and manipulating city infrastructure. Rockstar describes Grand Theft Auto V around three protagonists drawn into the criminal underworld and attempting dangerous heists. It is more useful to compare those central ideas than to treat Watch Dogs as simply “GTA with hacking.”

Choose Watch Dogs if you want hacking at the center
In Watch Dogs, hacking connected systems is presented as a way to affect your approach to the city. Ubisoft’s product page says: “In a world led by technology, you will be able to hack and manipulate the city’s systems to stop traffic lights, detonate gas lines, turn off the electrical grid and more.” Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs page frames this as the game’s signature distinction; PlayStation’s page also emphasizes hacking and profiling.

Choose Grand Theft Auto V if you want a crime story and online play
Grand Theft Auto V follows three protagonists caught up in the criminal underworld as they attempt dangerous heists. Its store page also presents GTA Online as a distinct multiplayer experience, rather than simply another name for the single-player story. Rockstar describes it as “a dynamic and ever-evolving online universe for up to 30 players,” with players able to build a criminal enterprise. The “up to 30” figure is Rockstar’s current store-page description, not a guarantee that every session or platform has that many players.
Pick GTA V if that three-protagonist crime premise is the stronger draw, or if you specifically want the separate online mode. Rockstar’s description is a publisher statement, not an independent comparison of the two games.

Check editions and platform details before buying
Watch Dogs
Ubisoft lists a Watch_Dogs Complete Edition that includes the game and Season Pass content, including a new game mode, weapons, outfits, and missions. Ubisoft says DLC bought from Ubisoft.com or Ubisoft Connect is compatible only with base games purchased on those platforms. The examined Rockstar PC listing includes GTAV Enhanced and GTAV Legacy; Rockstar says Legacy is included for hardware that does not meet Enhanced’s minimum requirements. Other storefronts and platforms may package the game differently. Confirm the exact version and whether the modes you want are included on the Rockstar Games listing for your platform and region.
