Journalist Matt Taibbi said he had been placed under a “blanket search ban” on Twitter, now X. The allegation arose from a reported exchange with Elon Musk in April 2023 and became public in February 2024. The available reporting does not independently establish how much Taibbi’s account visibility was restricted, how long any restriction lasted, or why it happened.
What Matt Taibbi alleged
In February 2024, Taibbi published screenshots of private messages with Musk and said he had at one point been under a “blanket search ban.” Contemporaneous coverage quoted Taibbi saying, “I was under a ‘blanket search ban’ at one point and a lot of my 1.9 million followers still don’t see my content.” That is Taibbi’s description of his experience, not an independently measured finding about his account or audience. Read the contemporaneous report.
When the exchange happened and what was going on
Reporting places the messages in April 2023, during a dispute involving Substack and the launch of its Notes feature, which was viewed as a competitor to Twitter. Taibbi asked Musk whether he was being shadowbanned. He made the screenshots public in February 2024. See the reporting on the exchange and context.
The reported response from Musk is not independent confirmation of the scope or cause of any restriction. The timeline helps explain the context of the allegation, but does not establish that Taibbi’s Substack activity prompted a platform action.

What Twitter and X say about shadow banning
Twitter’s 2018 statement
In a 2018 company statement, Twitter said, “And we certainly don’t shadow ban based on political viewpoints or ideology.” That statement described the company’s position and its understanding of shadow banning and moderation practices at that time; it was not an account-specific finding about Taibbi years later. Read Twitter’s 2018 statement.
X’s current terminology
X’s help page asks, “Does X shadow ban?” and discusses visibility filtering and platform manipulation. This is the platform’s terminology and position, not an adjudication of Taibbi’s allegation. Consult X’s help page.

What is—and is not—established
The account available in the reporting establishes that Taibbi made the allegation and that the reported exchange took place amid the Substack Notes dispute. The sources do not provide internal moderation records or independent account analytics confirming whether a search restriction was applied.
- Scope: The evidence does not establish which searches, posts, or users—if any—were affected.
- Duration: The length of any restriction is not established.
- Motive: The reporting does not establish that the action, if one occurred, was caused by Taibbi’s Substack activity or any other motive.
For those reasons, “Taibbi said he was shadowbanned” is more precise than stating as fact that Twitter shadowbanned him.
