Apple’s AI strategy is built around integrating features into its devices, processing requests on-device when possible, and using Private Cloud Compute for more demanding work. That is a coherent, privacy-focused approach—but it does not prove Apple was more responsible or capable than its competitors. The delayed Siri upgrade is an important counterexample: moving slowly can reflect quality control, but announcing features before they are ready can also undermine trust.
Was Apple late to AI?
Apple announced its first Apple Intelligence effort in June 2024, when it also announced Responsible AI principles. Its approach has been less about releasing a standalone chatbot and more about integrating AI into the operating systems and apps people already use. Apple’s 2025 proxy statement describes company oversight of AI and privacy, including regular updates to the full board on emerging technology.
That strategy can reasonably be called deliberate. Calling Apple “the adult in the room,” however, is an editorial judgment—not a finding established by comparative evidence. The available sources do not provide a rigorous comparison of AI companies’ safety, privacy outcomes, model quality, or performance.
Why did Apple delay the new Siri?
At WWDC in June 2025, the Associated Press reported that the more personalized Siri features Apple had announced the previous year had not arrived. Apple gave no precise completion date and indicated the upgrade would not come until the following year at the earliest. Apple software chief Craig Federighi said, “This work needed more time to reach our high-quality bar.”

That explanation leaves two plausible readings. Waiting may be a quality-control decision; it may also point to execution problems or promises made before a feature was ready. The delay is therefore counterevidence to the idea that a slower rollout, by itself, proves superior judgment.
How Apple says its AI architecture works
Apple’s June 2026 announcement described its third-generation foundation-model family, developed in collaboration with Google, as a mix of on-device models and server models running on Private Cloud Compute. The published technical specifications describe model design, not independent measures of accuracy or usefulness.

Is Apple Intelligence private?
Apple says that when Private Cloud Compute handles a request, personal data is not stored or accessible to Apple or anyone else, and that outside experts can verify the system’s design. This is Apple’s stated privacy guarantee; it is not an independent assessment of how every request behaves in practice or a comparison of privacy outcomes across AI systems.

Apple’s 2025 proxy statement says its full board receives regular updates on emerging technology, its Audit Committee assists with privacy-related AI oversight, and a management Privacy Steering Committee sets standards and handles escalations. Apple also says it does not use Apple user data to train its foundation models and describes consent and privacy protections for its ChatGPT integration. These are company disclosures, not independent findings.
What changed in Apple’s 2026 announcements?
On June 8, 2026, Apple announced a next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI across its platforms. Apple said the new features were available for developer testing and planned to make them available to users in the fall. It said new Siri features would be offered as a user beta later in the year. Those statements describe plans at announcement time, not confirmation that the features subsequently reached general availability.

The announcements show product and technical movement, but they do not establish that Apple caught up with competitors or that its systems are safer, more capable, or better in practice. Judging the rollout requires distinguishing announced capabilities from features people can actually use.

An iPhone 16 is one example on Apple’s compatibility list; compatibility alone is not a reason to buy or upgrade a device. Availability varies by language and region. Apple said Siri AI would initially be unavailable in the EU on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS, and that Apple Intelligence features would not be available in China while regulatory requirements were addressed. Check Apple’s current feature and compatibility information because availability can change.
How to judge whether Apple’s approach is actually better
A fair comparison should look beyond product announcements and consider:
- Availability: Which features are released, rather than merely announced?
- Capability: How well do they perform on tasks people actually need?
- Processing: What runs locally, and what is sent to remote servers?
- Data handling: What is retained, and who can access it?
- Reach: Which languages, regions, and devices are supported?
- Access and partnerships: What can developers use, and which outside companies contribute?
The evidence available here supports a focused account of Apple’s architecture, stated privacy commitments, rollout, and Google collaboration. It does not settle a comprehensive comparison with other AI companies.
