Georges Niang tried some small-ball center during a Warriors training-camp scrimmage, but the team has not announced him as a regular center. Steve Kerr’s reported view is conditional: Niang could fill the role with the right lineup around him, trading potential offensive punch for a rim-protection concern.
What happened in the Warriors’ camp scrimmage?
Niang saw some minutes at center in a Thursday training-camp scrimmage, according to NBA.com’s October 3, 2026 player-page news item. The report attributes the account of the scrimmage and Kerr’s comments to Luca Evans of the San Francisco Chronicle.
A CBS Sports report published October 2, 2026, based on RotoWire, also describes Kerr’s assessment of Niang as a possible small-ball five. Neither report says the Warriors have assigned him a regular center role.

The appeal is offensive: Kerr reportedly sees potential for lineups featuring Niang to provide a strong offensive punch. The available reports do not include lineup statistics or game results, so that is a coaching assessment of potential—not evidence that the configuration has already proved effective.

NBA.com lists Niang at 6 feet 6 inches and 230 pounds. Those measurements provide context for the small-ball label, but they do not establish how he would defend particular opponents or perform as a center.
What is the tradeoff?
The same reports identify rim protection as Kerr’s concern. A smaller lineup may offer offensive possibilities, but the sources do not quantify the defensive cost or show how the Warriors would address it with the other players on the floor.

The most specific reported description of Kerr’s view is that Niang is “capable of playing small-ball five, but you’ve got to put the right group around him.” The wording is reported by NBA.com and CBS/RotoWire and attributed through Luca Evans; the original Chronicle article or a direct transcript was not independently available in those reports.
Does this mean Niang will be a regular Warriors center?
No. The reports establish only that he got some center reps in a camp scrimmage and that Kerr sees the role as dependent on the surrounding lineup. They do not say how often Niang will play center, who would share the floor with him, whether the experiment will continue after camp, or how it would fare in regular-season games.
