Yes, ocean warming can make some of the food available to fish less nutritious, but it does not affect every plankton group or fish population in the same way. Warming can alter plankton’s fatty-acid composition and shift which kinds of plankton are abundant. Experiments, regional observations and ecosystem models support these possible effects; they do not show that wild fish everywhere have already become less nutritious.
How can warming change the food fish get from plankton?
There are two related pathways. First, warming can change the biochemical composition of plankton, including the balance and amount of omega-3 fatty acids. Second, it can change the mix of plankton groups in the ecosystem. If fish encounter prey with less energy or a different nutritional profile, their food quality may change even if the fish themselves are not measured.
That distinction matters: a change in plankton’s fatty acids is not the same as a measured change in fish muscle, and a shift in what fish eat is not by itself proof of a change in seafood nutrition for people.
What do experiments say about plankton’s fatty acids?
A 2026 meta-analysis by Dawson and colleagues in Global Change Biology combined 489 experiments from 143 publications covering 132 marine species. Across the groups analyzed, warmer conditions were associated with upper-end reductions of up to 34% in omega-3 fatty-acid proportions, up to 50% in omega-3 concentrations and up to 53% in omega-3-to-omega-6 ratios. The study also reported upper-end increases of up to 22% in saturated-fatty-acid proportions and up to 17% in their concentrations.

Those are the largest reported changes across taxa groups in the synthesis, not a forecast or a measured average for all plankton, fish or seafood. The strongest omega-3 reductions occurred in primary producers, which makes a downstream effect on food webs plausible. The authors also emphasized the need for longer-term studies under ecologically realistic conditions.
How might a different plankton mix affect fish food?
A 2023 Nature Climate Change study used a trait-based marine ecosystem model to project future changes in zooplankton and fish food quality. Under future conditions, especially in tropical regions under the high-emissions SSP5–8.5 scenario, the model projected a shift toward more carnivorous and gelatinous zooplankton and away from groups such as omnivorous copepods and euphausiids. Its projections to 2100 indicated less nutritious food for fish and reduced ecosystem carrying capacity.

This is a model projection, not a direct measurement of global change. The model also does not describe a simple chain in which more gelatinous plankton always means less energy reaches fish: gelatinous filter feeders can provide a direct energy route from small phytoplankton to fish, partly avoiding additional steps through the food web. The study identified declining phytoplankton biomass as a more important driver of projected fish-biomass decline than warming’s direct effects on zooplankton and fish biomass.

What has been observed in warm-ocean years?
NOAA’s 2018 account of research in the eastern Pacific described forage fish eating more gelatinous zooplankton during unusually warm years. Those prey were lower in energy than the fish’s usual prey. This is a regional example of a diet shift during warm conditions, not evidence that fish everywhere now eat lower-energy food.

Discussing the implications of warm events, Mary Hunsicker, a co-author and research ecologist at NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center, said: “We need a better understanding of the linkages between forage fish and their predators so that we can anticipate and mitigate the ecological impacts of warming events, such as the warm blob, which are expected to increase in frequency and intensity.”
Do plankton responses stay the same over time?
Not necessarily. In a 2020 laboratory selection study, Jin and colleagues exposed tested phytoplankton species to conditions 4°C warmer for roughly two years. Fatty-acid and lipid content partly or fully recovered in the species studied; in three of the four species, some losses of essential fatty acids were offset. This suggests that longer-term responses can differ from short-term ones, but it does not establish that wild plankton communities will fully compensate as oceans continue to warm.

Why do studies reach different results?
They examine different organisms, locations, timescales and outcomes. Some measure plankton chemistry in experiments, others observe prey choices in a particular region, and models project future food-web changes. Conditions such as salinity and eutrophication can also influence plankton quality, making it difficult to attribute every difference to temperature alone.

Does this mean wild fish or seafood are already less nutritious?
No universal percentage for a decline in the nutritional value of wild fish flesh is established by these findings. The meta-analysis concerns experimental responses across marine species, with the strongest changes in primary producers; the model concerns projected food quality and ecosystem capacity; the NOAA example concerns forage-fish diets; and the Antarctic study measured fish muscle in one species without finding a statistically significant nutritional-index change. Together, they show plausible risks and substantial variation, not a demonstrated global decline in seafood nutrition.
