If WARDOGS shows a WD-L error, note the exact code and where startup stops, then try Team17’s first-line checks: verify the game files in Steam, update your graphics driver, repair the bundled Elytra component, and restart your PC. Team17 lists these as potential workarounds, not guaranteed fixes, and does not publish a separate cause for each code.
What do WARDOGS WD-L error codes mean?
Team17’s 12 September 2026 support post identifies WD-L004, WD-L006, WD-L007, WD-L010, WD-L014, and WD-L020 as codes associated with launch failures or crashes under investigation. It does not map those codes to distinct causes or fixes. The number alone is therefore not enough to diagnose the problem. Team17 Support’s code and troubleshooting post is the official reference.
Before troubleshooting, record the full code and the stage at which the failure occurs—for example, before the game opens, during loading, or after reaching a menu. That information is useful if you need to contact support.

How do you fix the WD-L errors?
Try these lower-impact steps in order. Team17 describes them as possible workarounds; its post does not report a success rate or promise that any step will resolve a particular code.
- Verify the WARDOGS files in Steam. In your Steam Library, right-click WARDOGS, open Properties, select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files. Wait for Steam to finish before launching the game again.
- Update your graphics driver. Install the current driver for your NVIDIA or AMD graphics card using the manufacturer’s official update method, then try the game again.
- Repair Elytra from the game’s installation folder. Open the WARDOGS installation directory and run the Elytra setup or repair program included with the game. Follow its prompts; the Team17 post does not specify a separate download.
- Restart the PC. After the verification, driver update, or Elytra repair, restart Windows and test WARDOGS again.
What is WARDOGS error WD-L004?
Team17 names WD-L004 as one of the reported WARDOGS launch or crash codes, but does not publish a code-specific meaning or remedy. Apply the general checks above and avoid treating a third-party code listing as an official diagnosis. The same limitation applies to WD-L006, WD-L007, WD-L010, and WD-L014; a secondary WARDOGS error index may help identify public error-string wording, but it is not an official code definition.
What should you do if WD-L020 appears?
There is one specific, resolved WD-L020 case: a crash linked to Windows 11 preview update KB5124010. BULKHEAD announced on 30 September 2026 that WARDOGS Update 0.1.2 fixed that incident. If your error matches that recent scenario, make sure the game has received Update 0.1.2 and test again. What other troubleshooting checks are worth trying?
If the first steps do not help, Team17 also suggests these optional checks. Change one thing at a time and test the game, so you can tell whether a change made a difference.

- Compare network paths: test another connection, such as a mobile hotspot, to see whether the failure changes. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a recommendation to buy networking equipment.
- Disable CPU or GPU overclocking: return the processor and graphics card to their standard settings temporarily, then test WARDOGS.
- Set the maximum frame rate to 60 FPS: apply a 60 FPS cap through the relevant graphics settings and see whether the crash changes.
- Check for software conflicts: Team17’s post names software that may conflict with the game. Compare your running software with the named items in the official troubleshooting post; close a suspected conflict temporarily to test.
- Check security software: confirm that your antivirus or firewall is not blocking WARDOGS or Elytra. Only add an allowed app or exception if you trust the game installation and understand the security change.
Team17 also mentions virtualization features and Windows Memory Integrity among possible workarounds. Treat these as advanced options, not routine fixes: changing Windows security or virtualization settings can have consequences, and the post does not say these changes are required or guaranteed to solve a WD-L error. Do not weaken a security setting unless you understand the trade-off and have a specific reason to test it.

Team17 lists these minimum PC specifications in its support post. Meeting them does not prove a particular error’s cause, and falling short does not identify which WD-L code a system will show.

Include the exact WD-L code, the point where startup fails, your Windows version, and which troubleshooting steps you tried. Steam identifies Team17 as publisher and BULKHEAD as developer on the WARDOGS store page.
