The private alternative in the headline is the Pebble Time 2 smartwatch. Pebble says health data stays on the watch and phone by default rather than being uploaded to its servers; syncing to Apple Health or Android Health Connect is optional and requires permission. That makes it a possible fit for casual tracking with less routine cloud transfer—not proof that every part of the device, phone, or backup system is secure.
How Pebble Time 2 handles health data
Pebble’s Health Tracking documentation says steps, sleep, and heart rate on supported watches are recorded by the watch and displayed in the mobile app. It states: “Nothing is uploaded anywhere by default.” This is the vendor’s description of the default data flow, not the result of an independent security audit.
Health-platform sharing is optional. If enabled and authorized, Pebble sends data one way from its app to Apple Health on iPhone or Health Connect on Android. The documentation does not describe those platforms sending health data back into Pebble.

What the watch tracks—and what it does not promise
Pebble lists step and sleep tracking, and identifies the Pebble Time 2 as a model with a heart-rate sensor. Heart-rate background sampling can be adjusted. The first-person account that popularized this alternative describes weekly trends on the watch and weekly or monthly charts in the phone app; those are the writer’s reported experience, not independently measured accuracy results.
#1 Best Overall
- STYLISH DESIGN, BRIGHT DISPLAY: The sleek stainless steel build blends classic style with workout durability, while the bright 1.32" AMOLED display keeps your data easy to read, even under bright sunlight.
- PRECISE HEART RATE AND SLEEP TRACKING: Amazfit's BioTracker technology tracks your heart rate and sleep data with accuracy that previous sensors just can't match.
- UP TO 10 DAYS OF BATTERY LIFE: With long battery life that lasts up to 10 days with typical use, nightly recharges are a thing of the past.
- FREE MAPS WITH TURN DIRECTIONS: Stay on-track with free downloadable maps, and get turn-by-turn guidance on-screen or via your Bluetooth headphones. Enjoy ski maps for global resorts, including guidance for cable cars, slopes, and more.
- FASTER AND MORE ACCURATE GPS TRACKING: 5 satellite positioning systems ensure fast GPS connection and accurate positioning whenever you're out running, walking, cycling or hiking.
This is a better fit for someone seeking basic trends than someone choosing a watch for a broad fitness or safety feature set. The author says the Pebble lacks fall detection, skin-health monitoring, a body-battery or morning-energy score, coaching, and friend competitions. These limitations reflect that account rather than an independent feature-by-feature audit of all current competing devices.
Settings that give you more control
- Stop collection: Pebble documents a master health-tracking switch. Turning it off stops new data collection, but does not delete previously recorded data.
- Adjust heart-rate monitoring: On Pebble Time 2, heart-rate monitoring can be disabled separately, and background sampling frequency can be changed.
- Choose whether to share: Leave Apple Health or Health Connect sync disabled unless you want to grant permission for the one-way transfer.
- Consider account backup separately: The first-person account says users can choose whether to back up data to a Pebble account. The available documentation does not fully establish backup security or retention, so local-by-default health tracking should not be taken as a description of every possible copy of your data.
Who should switch—and who may not want to
Pebble Time 2 may suit a wearer who wants steps, sleep, and heart-rate trends while avoiding routine cloud upload by default. It is less compelling if the deciding factors are extensive training guidance, advanced wellness metrics, safety alerts, or social fitness tools. The trade-off is not simply “private versus tracked”: it is also a choice about which features and data flows matter to you.

Do not treat this as evidence that Fitbit or Samsung Health necessarily send data in a particular way, or that Pebble is categorically safer. The first-person article discusses other platforms’ privacy options, but those claims are not independently verified here against current platform documentation. Nor do the cited sources establish an independent security audit of the Pebble watch, its phone app, account backups, or third-party apps.
What the privacy claim does—and does not—mean
Keeping health data on the watch and phone by default can reduce routine transfer to a cloud service, according to Pebble’s documentation. It does not by itself establish how the phone is secured, what happens if you enable account backup or platform sync, or whether every relevant component has been independently tested. If your priority is minimizing sharing, review the app’s health and backup settings and grant platform permissions only when you want those transfers.
