Google has not announced a new Nest Hub or given a release date for another smart display. Google still documents the Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest Hub Max, while a May 2026 report found “Google Home Display” in Google Home app code without confirming a device or launch. If you need a display now, the existing Nest Hub may fit; if you want a successor, there is no confirmed date to wait for.

Is Google making a new Nest Hub?

There is no confirmed new Google smart display announcement in the official product pages reviewed here. Google’s Help Center lists Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max, and its comparison page presents the Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest Hub Max as its display options. Those listings establish which products Google documents, not whether either model is in stock where you live. Google’s Nest display Help Center and its Nest Hub comparison page are the places to check for current product information.

What the “Google Home Display” reference means

On May 13, 2026, 9to5Google reported finding the name “Google Home Display” in Google Home app code. The report said no further device information was available and did not identify a confirmed release. An app-code reference can indicate a development lead, but it is not an announcement, a specification sheet, or evidence of a launch date. 9to5Google’s report is the source for that finding.

What Google has said about smart-home hardware

In an October 2025 announcement about Gemini for Home, Google introduced new cameras, a doorbell, and a Google Home Speaker. The company said it was working with partners on more form factors, prices, and designs, but did not promise a new smart display. Google’s announcement describes broader smart-home activity, not a specific display or release window.

Google Home Chief Product Officer Anish Kattukaran later expressed enthusiasm for the category in a quote reported by TechRadar from The Vergecast, saying it felt like “almost the ultimate form factor” for a great home experience and that Google would “continue to invest in that category.” That is a statement about the category, not confirmation of a new Nest Hub, its features, or when it might arrive. TechRadar’s article includes the quote.

Should you buy a Nest Hub (2nd gen) now or wait?

Buy the Nest Hub (2nd gen) if its documented functions meet your needs and you can find it at an acceptable local price. Wait only if you are comfortable using another setup in the meantime: Google has not confirmed a successor or when one might ship, so there is no evidence-based date to plan around.

What the current Nest Hub can do

Google describes the Nest Hub (2nd gen) as a display for controlling compatible smart-home devices, viewing supported Nest camera feeds, setting alarms and timers, and using voice and visual assistance. Those functions make it a practical choice when you want a stationary screen for common home controls rather than a portable tablet. Check the compatibility of your devices and camera services before buying. Google’s Nest Hub (2nd gen) product page outlines its intended uses.

Check Thread needs before choosing a hub

If you use Matter devices that communicate over Thread, the distinction between Nest Hub models matters. Google lists the first-generation Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max as Wi-Fi Matter hubs; it lists the second-generation Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max as supporting both Wi-Fi and Thread. Its documentation does not list Thread support for the first-generation Hub. Confirm the exact model and the connectivity required by your devices in Google’s Matter hub compatibility information.

What can you use instead of a Google Nest Hub?

A tablet on a dock is the most direct alternative if you want a screen that can also leave the kitchen or living room for general use. TechRadar’s July 21, 2026 article describes the Pixel Tablet as a portable smart-home screen option, but says it has been discontinued. Treat it as an alternative to investigate, not a reliably available new purchase; check local stock, price, and support before choosing it. The article does not establish a current inventory level.

Compare the options against your actual needs

Option Best fit Key checks
Nest Hub (2nd gen) A stationary Google Home display for compatible device controls, supported Nest camera feeds, alarms, timers, and visual assistance. Local availability and price; device and camera compatibility; Thread requirement if you use Thread-based Matter devices.
Nest Hub Max A Google display option when you want to consider a larger-screen model. Google’s cited comparison page names it as an option, but the evidence here does not establish specific dimensions, price, or current local stock. Confirm those details and whether its features meet your needs.
Tablet with a dock A screen that can double as a portable, general-purpose device. Availability and support: the Pixel Tablet was reported discontinued in July 2026. Confirm how well the tablet and dock meet your Google Home control needs.

How long has it been since Google introduced a display?

9to5Google’s May 2026 report gives the relevant product history: the original Google Home Hub launched in 2018, Nest Hub Max followed in 2019, and Nest Hub (2nd gen) arrived in 2021. Those dates put the last listed Hub generation several years back, but they do not establish a fixed product-release schedule or prove that a replacement is overdue.
