1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIn the Android samples analyzed by Fox-IT, Vultur combined banking-focused surveillance with expanded remote control: operators could use Accessibility Services and Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) to interact with the screen, manage files, and block selected apps. The analysis describes specific samples, not the malware’s current prevalence or a feature set guaranteed in every Vultur variant.
What is Vultur Android malware?
Vultur is Android banking malware. In the samples examined by Fox-IT, its capabilities went beyond collecting device and activity information: the malware could also let an operator remotely interact with the infected device. Fox-IT’s technical analysis, “Android Malware Vultur Expands Its Wingspan”, describes the observed behavior and the components used to carry it out.
The report presents an analysis of submitted samples. It does not establish how widespread Vultur is now, where current infections are occurring, how many people have been affected, or whether the samples it studied represent the newest active variant.
How did the described infection chain work?
- A fake transaction alert started the contact. The campaign began with an SMS falsely warning of a large unauthorized transaction and telling the recipient to call a phone number.
- A caller sent an app link. During the call, the fraudster sent a second SMS linking to a trojanized app presented as McAfee Security. The familiar brand and interface were disguises in this campaign, not proof that the app was genuine.
- The dropper deployed additional payloads. The dropper, identified as Brunhilda, registered with its command-and-control (C2) server and then deployed three Vultur-related payloads. The first helped obtain Accessibility Service privileges and install the next stage; the final two worked together.
The practical warning is the sequence: an alarming unsolicited message, a call, and then pressure to install an app from a link. The campaign described by Fox-IT used social engineering as part of delivery; the brand name alone should not be treated as a trust signal. NCC Group’s newsroom summary also describes the release of the analysis in 2024.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
What could the analyzed variant do?
Fox-IT reported seven new C2 methods and 41 new FCM commands in the analyzed samples. FCM could deliver commands without requiring a continuous connection for every interaction. The report also found that AlphaVNC and ngrok components remained available for a VNC connection.
| Capability | What the analyzed samples could do |
|---|---|
| Screen and interface interaction | Use Accessibility Service actions for clicks, scrolling, swipes, navigation, text entry, screen recording, and other interactions. |
| Remote connection | Retain AlphaVNC and ngrok components for VNC access alongside the additional FCM command path. |
| File operations | Download, upload, install, delete, and search for files. |
| App blocking | Configure selected apps to be blocked. When a blocked app was detected, Vultur could press Back and display custom HTML or a default “Temporarily Unavailable” message. |
| Device and activity information | Send installed-app lists, keystrokes, device status, screen details, accessibility-event details, and other information to C2 methods described in the report. |
| Device-state changes | Disable keyguard, mute audio, hide the keyboard, display views or notifications, and interact with app settings. |
Fox-IT said overlay-injection support was unclear in the samples it studied. The report therefore does not establish that this function was fully implemented in those samples.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
How did the newer interaction path change remote control?
The main change described in the analysis was an expansion of the available control methods, not the removal of the earlier remote-access components. AlphaVNC and ngrok remained, while FCM-delivered commands and Accessibility Service actions added ways to operate the interface and manage files or app access.
Fox-IT’s executive summary describes the development this way: “The authors behind Android banking malware Vultur have been spotted adding new technical features, which allow the malware operator to further remotely interact with the victim’s mobile device.” The report’s wrap-up says: “During our investigation of recently submitted Vultur samples, we observed the addition of new functionality occurring shortly after one another.” Both statements refer to the samples under investigation, not a measured trend across all variants or current campaigns.

What made Vultur harder to analyze?
- Encrypted communications: The report describes HTTPS C2 traffic using AES encryption and Base64 encoding.
- Runtime-decrypted payloads: Payloads were encrypted and decrypted at runtime, including through native-code decryption.
- Modified app identities: Legitimate app identities were altered, complicating straightforward identification.
- Fragmented components: Functionality was split across two APKs and a DEX payload. Researchers had to assemble the components to understand the overall behavior.
These characteristics explain why examining one file in isolation may not reveal the full behavior described in the report. They do not, by themselves, show how often the malware is detected or how many devices are infected.
What do the published hashes and YARA rule tell you?
Fox-IT included package names, SHA-256 hashes, and a YARA rule for observed Brunhilda dropper samples. These are indicators tied to samples in the analysis, not a complete list of Vultur variants or a guarantee of protection. The report also notes that later-stage DEX payloads may be submitted to scanning services less often because they are uncovered later in the infection chain.

As a result, a match to a published indicator can be useful for identifying a known sample, but a lack of a match does not establish that a device is clean. The report does not recommend a particular antivirus product or establish that a specific device, app, or accessory prevents or removes Vultur.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can Android users take away from this campaign?
- Treat an unexpected financial alert followed by a call and an app-install link as a warning sign, especially when the caller is creating urgency.
- Do not use an app link supplied during an unsolicited call as proof that an app is legitimate; in the described campaign, the McAfee name and interface were impersonated.
- Understand that granting Accessibility Service privileges can give an app powerful ways to interact with the interface. The Fox-IT report describes this privilege as part of the observed infection chain, but does not provide a universal removal procedure or a current-device diagnostic.
- Use the published sample indicators only for the samples they identify; they are not a comprehensive test for every possible variant.
The findings are specific to Fox-IT’s analyzed samples. The report does not establish present-day campaign activity, geographic distribution, victim counts, or current C2 infrastructure.
