VS Code can be a capable writing app, but its strength is in projects made of many related text files: book chapters, research notes, outlines, drafts, and documentation. Its project-level tools, including folder-wide search, side-by-side editor groups, distraction-free layouts, and Git history, solve problems that writers face in long projects. It is a poor fit for some deliverables, such as heavily formatted documents that must go into a word processor for review. The rest of this article explains which features matter for writing, how to use them, and where the editor falls short.
Why a code editor suits some writing projects
The case for VS Code rests on one idea: a writing project is rarely a single document. A novel has chapters, character notes, and a timeline. A technical guide has sections, screenshots captions, and glossary entries. VS Code is built to open a whole folder and keep those files navigable in one window, so you spend less time switching between applications and more time working across the project.
The idea was argued in a first-person essay on XDA Developers by a writer identified as Nolen, published on 16 September 2026. The author describes adopting the editor after using it to clean up HTML, and then moving more of their writing into it. That account is one person’s experience. It is useful as a description of a workflow, not as proof that VS Code is the best tool for every writer.

Two layout features do most of the work for prose: Zen Mode and editor groups.

- YOUR PHONE AND CHROMEBOOK WORK BETTER TOGETHER: Easily transfer files between devices, and control your phone right from your Chromebook.
Zen Mode for distraction-free drafting
Zen Mode hides the interface elements around the editor, switches the window to full screen, and centers the text. Microsoft documents its default shortcut as Ctrl+K then Z on Windows and Linux. To leave it, press Escape twice. You can also enter Zen Mode from the View menu.
Shortcuts can be changed, so if a key sequence does nothing, check your keybindings before assuming the feature is missing. The View menu is the more reliable route on any platform.
Editor groups for side-by-side work
Editor groups let you open more than one document at once in split panes. You can create a split by dragging a tab to the edge of the editor area or by using the Split commands. Typical arrangements for writers include:

- A chapter draft on the left and a character or timeline file on the right.
- An outline beside the section being written.
- Markdown source beside its rendered preview, so you can check how the text will look as you edit it.
Because the panes are ordinary editor tabs, you can rearrange them at any time without losing place in either file.
Keyboard split shortcut: check before you rely on it
Some secondary coverage gives Ctrl+, as the shortcut for opening a second editor pane. That is wrong. Ctrl+, opens Settings. WindowsForum commentary published the same day as the XDA essay gives Ctrl+ as the Windows default for splitting the editor. Treat that as a secondary source, and confirm the current binding in VS Code’s keyboard shortcut reference for your version. Until you do, the drag-and-drop or Split command route works on every platform.
Searching and replacing across a project
The Search view in the Activity Bar searches every file in the currently opened folder. It groups matches by file, so you can see at a glance where a name, term, or phrase appears across chapters or notes.

Replacement across files is the feature that makes the editor useful for revision. Before anything changes, VS Code shows the pending edits as a diff. You can then replace all matches, replace within one file, or replace a single match. For a manuscript where a character’s name has changed, or a product term needs updating across a documentation set, this is much faster than opening each file in turn.
The risk is in the breadth of the search. A global replace will also change text inside quotations, dialogue attributed to other characters, notes you have kept for reference, and unrelated passages that happen to match. Read each match before replacing it, and use single-file or single-match replacement when context matters.
Markdown and output formats
VS Code includes a Markdown preview that renders the text as you type. That makes it a natural environment for README files, web articles, documentation, newsletters written in Markdown, and other text-first work.

- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
Markdown has limits that matter for some deliverables. It is not designed for complex page layout, and it does not give you the full review workflow of a word processor. If your final output must be a styled DOCX with tracked changes, margin comments, and publisher-specific formatting, you will need an export or conversion step, and that step should be tested with a sample before you commit a whole project to Markdown.
Version history with Git
The Source Control view in VS Code lets you see changed files, stage selected files or individual changes, and commit them with a message. It turns a folder of drafts into a project with checkpoints you can return to.

- Git must be installed separately. VS Code provides the interface; it does not ship Git itself. Without Git, the Source Control view has nothing to work with.
- A commit records only what you staged. Unstaged or unsaved changes are not part of the checkpoint. Stage deliberately, and commit at points that matter, such as the end of a chapter.
- A local repository is not a backup. Your history lives on the same disk as your files. If the disk fails, both the drafts and the history are lost. Pair local history with an independent backup, or push the repository to a remote host you control.
The phrase “infinitely detailed undo history” that circulates in discussions of this kind is a figure of speech. Git records the commits you make, not every keystroke, so it is a set of deliberate checkpoints rather than a complete record of every change.

Use the following table as a rough guide. It reflects the features described above, not a test of every workflow.
| Writing task | Fit for VS Code | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Book or long report split into chapter files | Strong | Folder-wide search, editor groups, and Git checkpoints suit many related files. |
| Documentation set or README files | Strong | Markdown preview and folder navigation match text-first output. |
| Web article written in Markdown | Good | Side-by-side preview shows the rendered result while you draft. |
| Heavily formatted manuscript needing DOCX tracked changes and comments | Weak unless tested | Markdown does not handle complex layout or the full Word review workflow; test the handoff first. |
| Single-page letter or form | Limited benefit | Project tools add little for one document; a word processor is simpler. |
For a long text project or a documentation folder, the project tools are the reason to choose VS Code. For a one-page letter, or a manuscript that must go to an editor as a styled DOCX, a conventional word processor is usually the more practical choice.

- Press Ctrl+K then Z to enter Zen Mode for drafting, and Escape twice to leave it.
- Open a second file in a split pane by dragging its tab to the side of the editor, or use the Split commands.
- Run a Search across the folder, read each match, and replace one file or one match at a time when context matters.
- Open the Source Control view, stage the files that reached a milestone, and commit with a clear message.
Shortcuts are the defaults documented by Microsoft for Windows and Linux. Check them against your own keybindings if they differ.
