There is no universal VPS size. Choose based on the software you will run, its database and other services, and how many people or tasks use it at once. Leave headroom for normal busy periods, then monitor the server and resize if CPU or memory pressure persists. A vCPU count or RAM figure by itself does not tell you how a plan will perform.
Start with the workload, not a plan size
List what the VPS must run: the operating system, application, database, background jobs, and any supporting services. Estimate expected concurrency—the number of requests or tasks being handled at the same time—because simultaneous work can raise both memory use and CPU demand.
There is no general-purpose capacity calculator or industry-wide “typical VPS” benchmark established by the provider documentation cited here. Treat provider guidance as a workload-specific starting point, not a guarantee. Actual needs also depend on configuration, caching, software behavior, and traffic patterns.
How much RAM does a WordPress VPS need?
Amazon’s guidance applies specifically to WordPress instances on Lightsail. It says small, low-traffic sites with minimal plugins may suit plans with 512 MB to 1 GB of RAM; sites using page builders such as Elementor or Divi, WooCommerce, or many active plugins should start at 2 GB and up. AWS notes that plugins, themes, and the database can consume significant memory. These figures are AWS recommendations for this configuration, not universal VPS requirements. Choose CPU for the workload you have
A vCPU count does not fully describe processing performance. Some plans use a baseline with capacity to burst above it; that can work for intermittent peaks but may not suit work that needs high CPU continuously. AWS documents baseline and burst behavior for Lightsail plans, so check the current rules for the exact plan rather than inferring sustained performance from its vCPU count. DigitalOcean separates Droplets into general-purpose, CPU-optimized, and memory-optimized families. Its CPU-optimized category is intended for sustained CPU-demanding work such as CI/CD, video encoding, machine learning, batch processing, and front-end web servers. These categories illustrate why you should identify the resource your workload actually constrains, rather than assuming CPU and RAM should always increase in the same ratio. Compare actual plans on the right criteria
Once you have a shortlist, compare the providers’ current specifications for your deployment region. Prices, availability, and plan policies can change, so undated price figures are not a reliable sizing guide.
- Memory capacity: Allow for the operating system, application processes, database, and expected concurrent work.
- CPU allocation and sustained behavior: Check whether CPU is shared or dedicated and whether the plan has a baseline or burst limit. Match burstable capacity to intermittent demand, not sustained load.
- Memory-to-vCPU balance: Plan families can target different workloads and offer different RAM-to-vCPU ratios; compare the ratio against the resource your software needs.
- Storage and transfer: Include SSD capacity and transfer allowance in the comparison. Lightsail bundles combine RAM and vCPUs with these other resources. Amazon Lightsail bundle details
- Resize path: Check whether resizing requires a snapshot or rebuild, whether downtime is involved, and what happens to disk size. Make sure you understand backups and rollback before changing a production server.
Reduce avoidable demand before upgrading
For WordPress, caching can reduce repeated PHP execution and database queries. AWS describes page caching, object caching, and a content delivery network (CDN) as options. Caching can reduce resource use, but it does not replace enough capacity for the workload. AWS’s WordPress documentation says, “The most effective way to improve WordPress performance is to run on an instance bundle with enough memory for your workload.” AWS Lightsail WordPress documentation

How do you know if a VPS is running out of memory?
On a Linux WordPress server, AWS recommends checking memory with free -m and inspecting the available column. Also check kernel messages for out-of-memory (OOM) kills, which can indicate that the system terminated processes under memory pressure. Slow page loads, timeouts under modest traffic, and database connection errors can also accompany memory problems. AWS Lightsail memory troubleshooting
AWS’s Lightsail troubleshooting guide says that if available memory is below 50 MB, the instance is under heavy memory pressure and at risk of OOM-killing processes. This is AWS’s diagnostic warning for Lightsail troubleshooting—not a universal Linux VPS threshold. The guide also addresses automatic memory tuning for the newer Lightsail WordPress blueprint; do not assume that feature is present on other installations.

Monitor before you resize
Watch CPU and memory during representative busy periods, and include disk and bandwidth in your checks. A brief spike alone may not warrant a larger plan; recurring pressure, failed processes, or user-facing slowdowns are stronger reasons to investigate. Provider metrics may summarize utilization differently: AWS notes, for example, that its Lightsail CPU graph averages utilization and baseline for instances with multiple vCPUs. If the workload has outgrown the instance, follow the provider’s current procedure. AWS documents taking a snapshot and launching a larger Lightsail instance. DigitalOcean documents resizing Droplets to increase CPU and RAM, and warns that disk size may increase permanently depending on the resize option.
