For a useful VPS performance check, start with YABS for a broad overview, then use focused tools to investigate CPU and memory, storage, or network results. Repeat the same tests with the same settings when comparing plans or tracking changes: benchmark scores describe a particular workload and test setup, not a universal measure of server quality.
What a VPS benchmark should measure
A single score cannot tell you everything about a VPS. Separate the questions you need answered:
- CPU: How quickly does it handle single-threaded work, and how does performance change with parallel work?
- Memory: How does memory perform under the workload you care about?
- Storage: What are the latency and throughput characteristics for the relevant read/write pattern?
- Network: What bandwidth can the VPS achieve to a particular endpoint?
- Sustained stability: Does performance hold up over a longer period?
These are different measurements. A network test does not measure disk speed, and a synthetic CPU score does not establish how a particular application will perform.
Choose the right tool for the question
YABS for a convenient first pass
YABS is a Linux server test script that combines fio for disk testing, iperf3 for network testing, and Geekbench for system performance. Its README documents options to disable or reduce test categories; it currently lists Geekbench 6 as the default and supports other versions through flags. Confirm current options and dependencies in the README because they can change.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YABS’s default iperf tests can try to use substantial bandwidth: the README describes roughly 20 seconds per location, split between download and upload. If the VPS has a bandwidth cap or is serving users, reduce the number of locations or disable network tests. The script downloads and runs code and external binaries, so review the project and its security notice before running it.
sysbench for focused CPU, memory, and other workloads
sysbench includes CPU, memory, file I/O, thread, mutex, and OLTP-style database workloads. Use it when you need a focused result or a workload-specific test. Record the workload and settings; an OLTP score, for example, should not be presented as a direct measure of an application unless the test represents that application.

fio for storage behavior
fio runs configurable I/O workloads from job files. Disk results depend on the workload parameters, so include at least the block size, queue depth, read/write mix, access pattern, and test duration when sharing results.
Small random I/O and large sequential I/O answer different questions. One VPS benchmarking guide uses 4K as an example block size for random I/O and 1M for sequential I/O; these are examples, not universal recommendations. Queue depth 1 emphasizes latency, while larger queue depths can target throughput. Match the settings to the storage behavior your application needs, and remember that a disk test creates I/O load.

- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
iperf3 for throughput between endpoints
iperf3 actively measures achievable bandwidth between network endpoints and reports throughput or bitrate, loss, and other parameters. Its result describes a path between the VPS and the selected remote endpoint. Record the endpoint or its location and the relevant test settings. Geography and routing affect the result; it neither measures the VPS disk nor proves an application will achieve the same throughput.
Geekbench and sustained stability
YABS includes Geekbench as its system performance test. Check the YABS README for the version used when interpreting or comparing results, since available versions and defaults may change.

Short synthetic tests and longer endurance tests answer different questions. VPSBenchmarks says its provider trials include web server tests, network transfers, sysbench, YABS tests, and a 24-hour sustained CPU endurance test to assess stability over time. That is one comparison site’s methodology, not a required duration for every VPS owner.

Run repeatable tests
- Record the setup. Note the plan name, data-center location, operating system, visible CPU model and vCPU count, memory, disk type and size, date and time, and whether production work was running. These details can help explain differences between runs.
- Run a short overview. Use YABS for a broad first look. Reduce or skip its network tests if bandwidth use could hit a cap or affect users.
- Investigate the result in isolation. Use sysbench for a focused CPU or memory question, fio for a storage question, and iperf3 between relevant network endpoints. Keep each workload’s settings with its result.
- Save a baseline. Record tool versions, settings, and results. When comparing a new plan or diagnosing a later change, rerun the same tests under similar conditions.
- Test the application when that is the real decision. RamNode’s guide lists pgbench for PostgreSQL, sysbench OLTP for MySQL or MariaDB, wrk or k6 for HTTP, iperf3 between instances, and redis-benchmark for Redis. Choose a test that reflects the application and document its configuration.
Compare results in context
For plan comparisons, select measurements that match the intended workload: single- and multi-thread CPU behavior, memory, random and sequential storage performance, relevant network paths, application response and capacity, and sustained stability. Compare test dates, locations, and workload settings as well as the numbers. Host generation, storage backend, CPU steal, and the number of neighboring workloads can affect the performance delivered by a shared VPS.

VPSBenchmarks’ screener groups plans into web, CPU, disk, network, and stability categories. Its grades are relative to the other plans in its comparison set, not an independent quality standard. The site says its screener includes plans tested in the prior 18 months. Its FAQ says a metric in the top 18% receives an A and one in the bottom 18% receives an F before metric grades are weighted into categories. Use these grades to screen options, then inspect the underlying results and dates before deciding.
VPSBenchmarks says it buys VPS instances as a regular customer for public trials and tests providers using the same procedure, while also receiving advertising and Featured Provider subscription support. That describes its stated methodology; it does not establish that every possible source of bias is eliminated.
Use CPU steal as a contention signal
During a CPU stress test, monitor %st in top. RamNode’s benchmarking guide describes sustained steal as a possible sign of host preemption or contention from neighboring workloads. Treat it as a diagnostic clue alongside performance results, not as a standalone verdict: one provider’s threshold heuristic is not a universal industry standard.
