You can use a VPN with a Vizio Smart TV, but the reviewed sources do not establish that a VPN app can be installed directly on the TV. The clearest route is to configure a VPN on a compatible router and connect the TV to that router’s network. Before choosing a service or buying hardware, check support for your exact router model and configuration.
Can you install a VPN app on a Vizio Smart TV?
Native VPN support is not established in the reviewed documentation. VIZIO describes VIZIO Home as its Smart TV platform but does not document VPN installation on its VIZIO Mobile App page. NordVPN says most smart TVs lack built-in VPN functionality, with Android-based TVs as an exception. That guidance does not prove that every Vizio model can never run VPN software; it means the available sources do not confirm a native Vizio VPN app.
A separate Android TV or other compatible streaming device is different: a VPN app on that device protects its connection, not an app installed on the Vizio TV itself. Check the device’s operating system and the VPN provider’s current supported versions before relying on this route. Provider setup indexes such as ExpressVPN’s setup guides list apps and instructions for selected platforms.

1. Configure the VPN on a compatible router
This is the most direct general option when you want the TV’s built-in apps and network connection to use a VPN. Configure the VPN on a router that supports the provider’s setup, then connect the Vizio TV to that router by Wi-Fi or Ethernet, if supported. NordVPN outlines router setup for smart-TV use in its smart TV and console guide; ExpressVPN documents supported router approaches in its setup guides and router support information.

Check your existing router before buying anything. Compatibility depends on the exact model, firmware, configuration, and provider instructions; a router that provides ordinary Wi-Fi is not automatically able to run a VPN configuration. If yours is incompatible, search for a VPN-compatible router, then verify the precise model and firmware against the VPN provider’s current documentation. The available evidence supports the product category, not a particular “best” router model.
2. Share a VPN connection from a computer
NordVPN lists Windows wireless and Ethernet connection sharing as an option for some smart-TV categories. This may let a TV use a computer’s VPN connection, but the reviewed instructions do not establish steps for every Vizio model, Windows version, or network setup. Treat it as a device-specific alternative and confirm that your computer and network support the required sharing method before depending on it.

3. Stream through a separate device with a VPN app
If you are willing to use a separate compatible streaming device, install the VPN app on that device and watch through it instead of the Vizio TV’s built-in platform. This does not add VPN software to the TV. Confirm that the specific device operating system and version are supported by the provider; app availability varies by platform.
How to choose the right setup
- Router support: Does the VPN provider support your exact router model and configuration?
- Which devices should use the VPN: Decide whether you want all traffic routed through the VPN or only devices connected to a separate router or network.
- Setup and hardware: Consider the configuration effort and whether your current router can do the job or you need additional equipment.
- Built-in TV versus external device: Decide whether you want to keep using Vizio’s built-in apps or are comfortable streaming through a separate supported device.
- Current terms and support: Check the provider’s up-to-date device support, connection behavior, and terms for your location.
The reviewed sources do not provide a comparable test basis for ranking VPN providers by speed, privacy, streaming access, or value, so this guide does not name an overall provider winner.

Will a VPN unlock streaming catalogs on Vizio?
Do not assume that a VPN will unlock a particular streaming catalog. The reviewed material does not establish successful access to any service or region, and streaming services may apply their own access rules. Check the relevant service’s terms and the VPN provider’s current guidance before subscribing for that purpose.
