You do not need a VPN to use Google Home or Google Assistant. If you want VPN routing for smart-home devices, the practical option is usually a VPN client configured on your router—but compatibility depends on the router, its firmware, the VPN provider’s supported protocol, and whether local discovery and control still work on your network.
Does Google Home need a VPN?
No. Google’s setup and troubleshooting guidance focuses on internet access, Wi-Fi compatibility, and local-network permissions; it does not list a VPN as a requirement. A VPN also does not guarantee better Assistant responses, and routing traffic through a VPN does not prevent Google from receiving activity sent to Google services.
For ordinary use, connect the Home or Nest device to a reliable home Wi-Fi network and set it up using the Google Home app. Google says most home Wi-Fi networks are compatible, while captive-portal networks and enterprise 802.1x/RADIUS networks are incompatible. It does not recommend mobile hotspots because of possible bandwidth, availability, and data-limit problems. Some Nest products support only 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. See Google’s Wi-Fi network compatibility guidance.

A VPN may be useful if you specifically want eligible devices’ internet traffic routed through a VPN service. Many smart-home devices do not offer their own VPN app, so one possible approach is configuring the router as a VPN client. This is not a Google Home feature and is not guaranteed to work with every device or network.

- Each nest Wi Fi router provides up to 2200 square feet of fast, reliable Wi Fi coverage for your home. [1]
Check router and provider support before configuring
- Confirm that the router supports VPN client mode; VPN server support alone is not the same thing.
- Check the router firmware and the VPN provider’s current setup instructions for that exact model or firmware.
- Verify the required client protocol. NordVPN’s router guidance says configuration may require OpenVPN client support, and notes that ISP-issued routers may not support VPN configuration. Its instructions are available at NordVPN Support’s router setup page.
- If you want only selected devices routed through the VPN, check whether the router supports per-device routing or equivalent rules.
- After setup, test pairing, local discovery, casting, and control—not just whether a device can reach the internet.
VPN providers publish configuration instructions for some router environments, but that does not establish that a particular service is best for Google Home. NordVPN provides a general VPN-router setup guide, and ExpressVPN documents router app support. Neither source establishes Google Home-specific performance or guarantees that all local-control features will continue to work.
Could a VPN interfere with setup?
It can in a specific situation: Google warns that some VPN tunnels on iOS might interfere while setting up Google Wifi, Nest Wifi, or Nest Wifi Pro. Google Nest Help explains that some VPNs route phone communications through a “VPN tunnel,” which might interfere with the Wifi device’s setup process. Its recommendation is to turn off the VPN temporarily during setup, then restore the previous privacy setting afterward. This is a setup warning, not a claim that VPNs always break Google Home. - Nest Wifi Pro is up to 2x faster than Wi-Fi 6, so you get super fast speeds and a reliable connection for your entire home[1]
- Three Wi-Fi routers provide up to 6600 square feet of fast, reliable Wi-Fi[2]; and you can customize your setup to create a mesh Wi-Fi system for the coverage you need
- Nest Wifi Pro uses the latest, most advanced Wi-Fi 6E technology[3], so it isn’t compatible with previous generations of Google Wifi or Nest Wifi
- Nest Wifi Pro automatically adjusts your Wi-Fi network’s performance and activity; it prioritizes video calls and helps websites load quickly
- It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]
Fix pairing or discovery problems on your network
If the app cannot find a Home or Nest device, first check the phone’s local connection and permissions. Google’s pairing guidance recommends the following checks:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Connect the phone to the same Wi-Fi network as the Google Home or Nest device.
- Turn on Bluetooth and, while troubleshooting, turn off cellular data.
- On iOS 14 or later, allow local-network access for the Google Home or Nest app in iOS settings.
- If an iOS VPN is active while setting up Google Wifi, Nest Wifi, or Nest Wifi Pro, temporarily disable it for setup and restore the setting afterward.
- Check router rules or VPN routing if discovery or pairing still fails, then retry with the relevant routing rule or VPN temporarily disabled to isolate the cause.

Custom DNS is not a VPN
Changing DNS does not encrypt a device’s internet traffic like a VPN tunnel. Google says Nest Wifi and Google Wifi act as DNS proxies and offer automatic, ISP-provided, or custom DNS choices. A custom DNS server that is wrong or unavailable can prevent connected devices from reaching the internet; changing DNS is therefore not a substitute for VPN routing. Details are in Google’s DNS server instructions.
Keep the home network secure with or without a VPN
A VPN is only one part of network configuration. Google recommends using a strong Wi-Fi password and keeping router firmware current. Its security guidance also suggests reviewing port-forwarding rules and considering removal of exposed rules for ports 8008, 8009, and 8443. Treat those as general network-security checks, not as a reason to install a VPN. See Google’s Nest, Chromecast, and Google TV Streamer security tips.

What to choose
If the goal is simply to run Google Home or use Google Assistant, choose no VPN configuration: Google does not require one. If you have a specific reason to route smart-home traffic through a VPN, start with the router and provider compatibility checks above, then test the features you use. The available guidance does not establish a best VPN for Google Home through device-specific comparisons, speed tests, or evidence that every provider preserves local control.
