Yes: a VPN encrypts traffic routed through its tunnel between your device and the VPN server, but it does not automatically encrypt every connection from your phone or computer. Split-tunnel rules, DNS settings, routing exceptions, or a dropped connection can leave some traffic outside that tunnel. HTTPS separately protects the connection between your browser and a website.

What does VPN encryption protect?

A VPN creates an encrypted connection, or tunnel, between your device and a VPN server. Traffic that your device routes through that tunnel is protected on that leg of the journey. The local network and your internet service provider can generally see that your device is connecting to the VPN endpoint, but the VPN operator handles the tunneled traffic at its server.

The tunnel’s protection ends at the VPN server. A VPN does not, by itself, keep data encrypted all the way to its final destination. HTTPS provides a separate layer between a browser and a website when the site supports it. The two protections cover different parts of the route: device-to-VPN server and browser-to-website. See the UK National Cyber Security Centre’s VPN guidance for an overview of VPN routing.

Does a VPN encrypt all traffic from your device?

Not necessarily. Whether all internet-bound traffic enters the tunnel depends on the VPN client, operating system, route rules, and settings. A full-tunnel configuration routes general internet traffic through the VPN. Split tunneling creates exceptions, sending selected apps or destinations directly to their destination while other traffic uses the tunnel.

For example, Microsoft documents a configuration in which selected Microsoft 365 endpoints bypass a corporate VPN while other internet traffic continues through it. This is an example of how split tunneling can work, not a description of every VPN app. See Microsoft’s overview of VPN split tunneling for Microsoft 365.

Can DNS or a dropped connection bypass the VPN?

DNS requests

DNS translates a domain name, such as a website address, into an IP address. A VPN may route DNS requests through the tunnel to its resolver, but configuration exceptions can send queries to the ISP or another resolver instead. That resolver may learn the requested domain names even when the later website connection uses HTTPS. Check the VPN app’s documentation and use a DNS-leak check to see whether queries are going where you expect; behavior varies by service and configuration. The IETF’s RFC 7359 discusses VPN traffic leakage in dual-stack hosts and networks.

Tunnel interruptions

If the VPN tunnel drops, a device may resume ordinary internet access outside it. A kill switch is intended to block internet traffic while the VPN is unavailable, reducing that exposure until the tunnel reconnects. It is a protective feature, not a universal guarantee: what it blocks depends on the client, settings, operating system, and failure condition. NCSC guidance recommends using a kill switch.

What a VPN does not guarantee

  • That every app or connection is covered: split tunneling and route exclusions can send selected traffic outside the tunnel.
  • That every DNS query uses the VPN: DNS routing depends on the configuration.
  • That nobody can see your activity: the VPN operator handles tunneled traffic at its endpoint, and websites or services you use may receive information you send them.
  • That a website is honest: HTTPS encrypts a connection but does not prove the site is legitimate. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission warns that scammers can use encryption too; information sent to a scammer still reaches that party. See the FTC’s public Wi-Fi safety guidance.
  • That HTTPS is unnecessary: HTTPS protects the browser-to-site connection independently of VPN use.

How to check what your VPN covers

  1. Review the routing mode. In the VPN app, look for full-tunnel or split-tunnel settings and check whether any apps, websites, or destinations are excluded.
  2. Check DNS handling. Consult the provider’s documentation for how the app routes DNS queries, then run a DNS-leak check while connected. A provider’s description applies to that product and configuration, not every VPN.
  3. Check IPv6 behavior. Look for the app’s documentation on IPv6 routing and leakage, especially if your network supports IPv6. VPN handling can differ across dual-stack networks.
  4. Enable and understand the kill switch. Check which traffic it blocks, whether it must be enabled manually, and what happens when the VPN reconnects.
  5. Keep HTTPS protections in place. Use secure connections to websites and verify that you are dealing with the intended site; a VPN does not validate a destination.

What to compare when choosing a VPN

Do not judge coverage by a “connected” indicator alone. Compare the specific app and operating system you use, its full- and split-tunnel controls, DNS and IPv6 handling, kill-switch behavior, and privacy and logging disclosures. The features and defaults can differ by service and version, so check the documentation for your setup rather than assuming one provider’s behavior applies to another.
