If your VPN connects and then drops, record the connection and the surrounding network events before changing settings. A timestamped timeline can show whether the device lost Wi-Fi, the VPN tunnel failed on its own, or a gateway disconnected it—and helps you and an administrator compare the right logs.
What to record when the VPN drops
Use one consistent clock and include the time zone if you plan to share the record. Note the exact connection and disconnection times, the VPN’s full message or error code, and what the network was doing at each point. Microsoft’s Windows Always On VPN guidance recommends examining application logs and RasClient events; its wireless troubleshooting guidance recommends recording wireless conditions and correlating client traces with access-point or controller logs.

This is a practical way to organize observations, not a vendor-mandated log format. Preserve the full message and timestamp rather than relying on a paraphrase or cropped screenshot. Also record recent changes before troubleshooting: operating-system updates, wireless drivers or firmware, security or VPN software, wireless profiles, authentication policies, and access-point configuration.

Wi-Fi drops or roams at the same time
Investigate the underlying wireless connection before blaming the VPN tunnel. Record the network name, access point, signal conditions, and whether the device roamed. For Windows clients, Microsoft recommends correlating the client trace with access-point or controller logs. A simultaneous Wi-Fi loss and VPN disconnect points first to the wireless timeline, though it does not by itself establish the root cause.

Wi-Fi remains connected, but the VPN tunnel drops
Focus on the VPN client’s connection evidence. In Microsoft’s Windows Always On VPN troubleshooting scenario, the relevant evidence includes RasClient events in the application logs and the error code in the event message. Keep the exact timestamp and full message. The precise navigation path and applicable logs depend on the Windows version and VPN deployment; this guidance is not a universal path for macOS, mobile devices, or every consumer VPN app.
A managed or site-to-site VPN disconnects
Give the administrator the client-side drop time so it can be compared with gateway or server diagnostics. For Azure VPN Gateway, Microsoft identifies TunnelDiagnosticLog as useful for investigating past unexpected disconnections and recommends checking Azure Service Health after establishing when the disconnect occurred. Intermittent Azure site-to-site VPN troubleshooting may also require an administrator to compare network ranges and IPsec policies on the gateway and on-premises side.

Keep error codes tied to their context
An error code is a clue about a particular event and connection stage, not a diagnosis for every VPN disconnect. In its Windows Always On VPN guidance, Microsoft describes error 809 as the remote server not responding; possible causes include intervening network devices, firewalls, or NAT. For the IKE/IPsec scenario covered there, UDP ports 500 and 4500 are among the items to investigate with a network administrator or service provider. Do not assume those ports explain a drop unless the error and connection setup fit that scenario.

- Connection layer: Did the device lose Wi-Fi or other network access, or did only the VPN tunnel drop?
- Timing: Does the event coincide with roaming, sleep/resume, a client authentication event, a profile sync, or a gateway-side disconnect?
- Scope: Does the problem follow one device, one network, one VPN profile, or multiple users or devices? This comparison can help narrow the issue, but there is no single universal procedure for every VPN service.
- Best evidence source: Is the next useful record on the Windows client, the wireless access point or controller, or the VPN gateway or service?
- Error detail: Does a documented code point to a specific authentication or network path, or is the event only a generic disconnect?
Once the timeline supports a likely cause, change one relevant setting at a time and record the change and its result. If several settings change together, a later improvement or failure is harder to interpret. For a managed VPN, share the timeline and ask the administrator to correlate it with infrastructure logs before changing organization-controlled settings.

Microsoft’s wireless troubleshooting guidance recommends identifying the scenario, collecting baseline evidence, then using the Wi-Fi autoconnect state machine and Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) analysis to isolate the affected component and connection stage. The following references cover particular Windows and Azure scenarios; their log paths and labels should not be treated as universal instructions for other platforms or VPN deployments.
