If a VPN says a certificate is expired or not yet valid, check the device’s actual date and time and whether its clock is synchronized. Certificate checks compare the certificate’s notBefore and notAfter dates with the local system clock, so an incorrect clock can make a valid certificate appear invalid. If correcting the time does not clear the error, investigate the certificate and VPN configuration instead of repeatedly changing the clock.
First, identify what kind of certificate error you have
Record the full error text and code, the VPN client and operating system, and whether the connection uses certificate-based authentication. The wording can help separate a time-validity problem from a trust or configuration problem.
- A message that a certificate is not within its validity period points to a comparison between the certificate dates and the current system time.
- A message that the certificate chain terminates at an untrusted root points to a trust-chain problem, not necessarily a clock problem.
Microsoft documents these as distinct VPN failure causes with different remedies in its Azure point-to-site VPN troubleshooting guide and Always On VPN troubleshooting guide.
Check the actual system time and synchronization
Check the device’s date, time, time zone, and clock synchronization status. A plausible displayed hour alone does not establish that the underlying clock is accurate or synchronized.

Microsoft explains the reason in its Linux VM certificate-chain troubleshooting guidance: “Certificate validation checks notBefore and notAfter against the local clock.” The article’s commands are Linux examples, not universal VPN instructions.
Linux example from Microsoft
On the Linux VM covered by that guidance, check UTC time with date -u and inspect time-service status with chronyc tracking or ntpq -p. Use the time service and synchronization procedure supported for your system; on other platforms, use the operating system’s supported time settings or your administrator’s managed process.

Correct the clock, then retry once
If the date, time, or synchronization status is wrong, correct it using the supported system or organization-managed method. Then retry the VPN connection or repeat the relevant certificate verification. Microsoft’s Linux example specifically recommends rerunning verification after time synchronization.

If the validity-period error clears after correcting the clock, clock skew was a likely cause. If it remains, the certificate may actually be expired or not yet valid, or the problem may involve trust, installation, or VPN settings.

If time is correct, inspect the certificate and VPN configuration
Certificate locations and requirements depend on the VPN product and configuration. Use the VPN administrator’s documented procedure rather than assuming that instructions for one Microsoft VPN apply to another client.
Confirm the right certificate is installed
Check that the relevant client or server certificate is installed in the expected certificate store. For Azure point-to-site VPN, Microsoft identifies the current user’s Personal certificate store as the location for the client certificate. Its troubleshooting guide also describes incorrect certificate placement and expired or corrupted keys as separate issues.

Check certificate dates and trust
Verify that the certificate is within its validity dates and that the appropriate root certificate is installed and trusted. Microsoft’s Always On VPN guidance lists an expired server machine certificate as one possible IKE authentication cause and a missing trusted root as a cause of error 0x800B0109. Its certificate enrollment tutorial explains how to inspect validity dates.
Check certificate purpose and server name
For Windows Always On VPN, verify that the server certificate has the required Server Authentication Enhanced Key Usage and that its name matches the VPN configuration. Microsoft lists a missing Server Authentication usage and a server-name mismatch among possible certificate errors in its troubleshooting guidance and certificate tutorial.

When to involve the VPN administrator
If the VPN is managed by an employer, school, or service administrator, provide the exact error and relevant certificate details to that administrator. Root certificates, trust settings, VPN packages, and gateway configuration may be centrally managed; changing them independently can create security or access problems.
Do not disable certificate validation or install a certificate you do not trust to make the warning disappear. A clock correction addresses only a clock-related validity mismatch; it does not establish that a certificate or VPN endpoint is trustworthy.
Why the fix depends on the VPN
The documented examples cover different environments: a Linux virtual machine’s certificate verification, Azure point-to-site VPN, and Windows Always On VPN. They do not establish one universal set of commands, certificate stores, or remedies for every VPN client and operating system. Follow instructions for the specific VPN configuration, and use administrator-managed procedures where applicable.
