For many beginners, a volumizing brush dryer is likely easier to coordinate: the brush and airflow come from one tool. A separate round brush and hair dryer require you to manage both hands, guide the airflow and move the brush through each section together. That is a practical inference from how the tools are used—not a result established by comparative user testing.
How the two setups differ

Hand coordination
With a separate brush and dryer, L’Oréal’s technique asks you to place the brush beneath a small section, direct the dryer along that section and move both tools together. A hot-air brush puts brush and airflow in one tool, so there are fewer separate movements to coordinate.

Neither setup removes the need to prepare your hair or work methodically. Follow the instructions for your exact appliance and take manageable sections. L’Oréal recommends small sections for its separate-brush technique; Dyson’s preparation guidance varies by hair texture and attachment.

Shaping and control
A round brush can shape the ends, create a bend through the middle of a section, add lift at the roots or lift a fringe, according to Dyson. That describes what the brush can do; it does not establish that a traditional brush-and-dryer setup has better styling results than an integrated hot-air brush.
Using a separate round brush and dryer
L’Oréal’s tutorial describes this sequence:
- Fit a nozzle to the dryer so you can direct the airflow along a section.
- Work with a small section of hair and place the round brush beneath it.
- Move the brush through the section while directing the dryer along the hair.
- Finish with a blast of cool air to help set the style.
The method depends on keeping the brush and airflow working together. If that coordination is the part you find difficult, the integrated design of a hot-air brush may be simpler to handle.

Using a round volumising brush attachment: Dyson’s instructions
Preparation depends on hair texture in Dyson’s directions for its round volumising brush—not a universal routine for every hot-air brush:
- Straight or wavy hair: Rough-dry first with the Dryer+Flyaway smoother.
- Curly or coily hair: Pre-dry first with the Firm smoothing brush.
Dyson then instructs users to work from root to tip, lifting sections and shaping the ends under. It describes the attachment this way: “The round volumising brush directs air into the hair to give body, and the bristles create tension to shape hair as it dries.”
