Voice over wireless IP means carrying voice calls over an IP network while using a wireless network for access. In the common Wi-Fi case, that is voice over IP (VoIP) over a wireless local area network (WLAN), often called voice over WLAN (VoWLAN) or VoWiFi. IP carries the voice service; Wi-Fi supplies the wireless connection.

What is voice over wireless IP?

It is voice communication sent using Internet Protocol (IP) across a wireless network. In common usage, the wireless network is Wi-Fi: a phone sends and receives voice traffic over a WLAN rather than relying on a wired connection at the handset. The IEEE Standards Association describes IEEE 802.11 as covering the transport of voice, audio, and video over wireless LANs (IEEE 802.11-2024).

The related terms describe different parts of the arrangement. VoIP is voice carried over an IP data network. VoWLAN and VoWiFi commonly refer to VoIP delivered over a Wi-Fi WLAN. Usage can vary: a Wi-Fi calling service offered by a carrier may have a different implementation or service arrangement from an enterprise VoWLAN deployment.

How does a voice-over-wireless-IP system work?

In a typical enterprise example documented by Cisco, a wireless IP phone connects to a Wi-Fi access point. The access point forwards traffic into the wired IP network, and call-control equipment processes and routes the call. The exact equipment and network design depend on the phone system and deployment (Cisco’s wireless IP phone overview).

  1. Wireless phone: captures and plays the caller’s speech and connects to the WLAN.
  2. Access point: provides the phone’s wireless network connection and bridges traffic toward the wired network.
  3. IP network: carries the voice traffic between network components.
  4. Call-control system: handles call processing and routing in the documented enterprise architecture.

Which parts are Wi-Fi, and which parts are VoIP?

They are related but not interchangeable. IEEE 802.11 defines WLAN media access control (MAC) and physical-layer (PHY) functions: it describes how devices communicate over the wireless LAN. VoIP describes voice communication carried over an IP data network. A voice service also uses signaling and speech codecs, whose choices depend on the system.

Cisco’s troubleshooting guide gives SIP and SCCP as signaling examples, and G.711 and G.729 as codec examples. These are examples from Cisco’s documented system, not universal requirements. Cisco defines VoIP as carrying phone calls over an IP data network, whether that network is the Internet, an internal network, or both (Cisco’s VoWLAN troubleshooting guide).

Does a WLAN need special configuration for voice?

Voice traffic can use a WLAN, but a data-only wireless layout should not automatically be assumed suitable for phones. Cisco distinguishes WLANs carrying voice from those used only for data and notes that voice requires voice-aware configuration and network layout. The details depend on the intended use, coverage and roaming needs, security configuration, and the voice system’s supported features; the sources do not establish one universal configuration or numeric performance threshold.
