At VMware Explore 2025, Broadcom framed AI security as a private-cloud workload protection challenge: isolate AI workloads, detect threats, and help security teams investigate them. Its headline agentic-AI security announcement was a technology preview of zero-trust lateral security for agentic AI workloads on VMware Cloud Foundation Private AI Foundation—not a generally available product confirmed by the cited announcement.

What Broadcom presented at VMware Explore 2025

Broadcom announced that VMware Explore 2025 would take place August 25–28 at The Venetian Convention and Expo Center in Las Vegas, with more than 400 sessions across four content tracks. The company scheduled CEO Hock Tan’s keynote, “Shaping the Future of Private Cloud and AI Innovation,” for August 26. Broadcom’s event announcement set the broader private-cloud and AI context for the security program.

Within that program, vDefend sessions treated AI as a workload to secure inside private-cloud infrastructure. The agenda connected architectural controls—such as isolation and segmentation—with threat detection and investigation workflows. These were vendor-authored descriptions of planned sessions and capabilities, not independent evaluations of their effectiveness.

Three security questions in the vDefend sessions

How should generative AI systems be secured and kept resilient?

The session “Generative AI: Addressing Security and Resiliency Concerns” described the demands of AI applications, including large-scale data storage and processing, model governance workflows, and large language models. It proposed discussion of technical, legal, and organizational security and resiliency concerns. The listed speakers were Ranga Rajagopalan, CTO of Broadcom’s ANS Division; Prashant Gandhi, Head of Products for that division; and Mark Fournier, CIO/CTO of US Senate Federal Credit Union.

What belongs in a private-AI architecture?

A separate session focused on designing a private-AI architecture around data protection, workload isolation, and automated policy enforcement. Broadcom described vDefend segmentation and real-time threat detection as ways to enhance AI model security, alongside Private AI with NVIDIA. Those are vendor claims and architectural framing; the session material does not provide measured efficacy results.

Can GenAI assist threat investigation?

“Elevate Threat Investigation Workflows with the GenAI Intelligent Assist” focused on triaging, contextualizing, and responding to incidents. Broadcom said the demonstration would cover explainability and remediation of threat-detection events. Bopaiah Puliyanda, Senior Manager of Product Management at Broadcom, was the named speaker. The official VMware Security Blog session description says: “The Intelligent Assist for vDefend is designed to address these challenges by leveraging GenAI.” That statement describes the product’s intent, not a measured result.

How Broadcom described vDefend’s security controls

In its session material, Broadcom described vDefend’s distributed firewall, distributed intrusion detection, and distributed intrusion protection services as operating in the kernel through rules and signatures within virtual networking infrastructure. It also described AI-assisted configuration of centrally managed protection mechanisms. This is Broadcom’s account of the architecture; the session description does not establish how the controls perform in independent testing.

The distinction matters for agentic AI: lateral security is about controlling and observing communication between workloads, while investigation assistance concerns what security teams do with detected events. Broadcom’s Explore program presented these as related layers of a private-cloud security approach, not as proof that one capability replaces the others.

Agentic-AI lateral security was announced as a technology preview

In a September 16, 2025 post about Explore innovations, Broadcom described a technology preview of zero-trust lateral security for agentic AI workloads running on VMware Cloud Foundation Private AI Foundation. The announcement establishes that Broadcom previewed the capability in 2025; it does not establish its current release status. Readers should not treat the preview as generally available without newer confirmation.

The same post also announced a Micro-Segmentation Quick Start Wizard, an NDR Sensor for datacenter-wide threat visibility, and Fileless Malware Defense. Those announcements place the agentic-AI preview within a wider vDefend program, but they do not change its stated preview status. Broadcom’s Explore security recap is the source for these announcements.

How the security announcements fit Broadcom’s Private AI story

Broadcom’s Explore recap said VMware Private AI Services would become a standard component of VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0. It also listed Intelligent Assist for VCF, Model Context Protocol support, and a multi-accelerator model runtime among the announced capabilities. This was Broadcom’s platform positioning at Explore 2025; the cited material does not independently verify current packaging or availability for every customer.

The platform and security announcements are related but distinct. The platform story concerns running and supporting AI services in a private-cloud environment; the vDefend story concerns workload protection and security operations within that environment. Neither announcement alone demonstrates that all named capabilities are available together in every deployment.

What the event’s private-cloud statistics do—and do not—show

Broadcom’s Explore recap said 92% of companies trust private-cloud security and compliance, and that 7 out of 10 organizations have repatriated or plan to repatriate workloads from public to private clouds. The recap, as presented in the material cited here, does not identify the underlying study or its methods. Attribute both figures to Broadcom’s recap rather than treating them as independently verified evidence or as a measure of vDefend effectiveness. The Explore recap provides the figures.

What enterprise buyers can reasonably conclude

Explore 2025 showed how Broadcom wants customers to think about AI security in its private-cloud environment: protect workloads with controls such as isolation and segmentation, detect threats, and assist analysts as they investigate incidents. The most specific agentic-AI capability in the event recap—zero-trust lateral security on VMware Cloud Foundation Private AI Foundation—was a technology preview in the September 2025 announcement.

The cited materials do not provide independent product testing, a like-for-like comparison with another vendor, or confirmation of the preview’s present availability. For an evaluation, buyers should verify current release status and platform requirements with Broadcom and assess how the described controls fit their own AI workloads and security operations.
