Choose an FFmpeg-based workflow if you can build and maintain the scripts and operations around it. FFmpeg is a software encoder and media-processing tool that can be used within a scripted workflow. For a continuous playlist stream, the playlist input is only one component. You must also decide how the process starts and stays running, how failures are detected and handled, and how the outgoing stream is monitored. Those details depend on the media and uptime requirements; the available documentation does not establish one guaranteed, turnkey FFmpeg playlist scheduler or recovery setup.

That is not the same as scheduling a stream to start at a particular time of day. vMix’s knowledge base says it is primarily designed for single live events and does not support time-of-day scheduling. - Basic playlist automation is useful, and you can handle any time-of-day scheduling requirement separately.
- You have an operator or supporting system to manage stream starts, monitoring, and failures.
Choose FFmpeg when you can own the pipeline

For either choice, define continuity before setup
- Identify the source files and confirm their formats are suitable for your chosen workflow.
- Decide whether you need transitions, overlays, live switching, or only a repeating sequence.
- Specify how and when the stream starts, what should happen if the encoder exits, and who or what checks that the stream is still live.
- Test the full chain—including the network and YouTube ingest—before depending on unattended operation. The cited sources do not provide a comparative uptime guarantee for either approach.
YouTube ingest and stream continuity are separate concerns
YouTube’s HLS ingestion path has a specific conformance requirement: encoder media playlists and media segments must conform to the HTTP Live Streaming 2nd Edition specification. Separately, a valid encoder output does not solve scheduling or recovery. A continuous service needs a way to launch the workflow, notice when it stops or loses its connection, and take an appropriate recovery action. The sources cited here do not establish that either vMix or stand-alone FFmpeg automatically provides a complete unattended 24/7 setup.

Expecting vMix PlayList to start a stream on a clock
The playlist feature handles basic input automation, not time-of-day scheduling. Arrange an external scheduling method if the stream must start at a specific time without an operator.

Treating an FFmpeg playlist as the whole service
A media sequence does not by itself provide supervision, alerting, or recovery. Design those operational layers around the command or script, and test what happens when the process or network fails.
Assuming supported formats prove reliability
Encoder formats and ingest conformance describe what can be sent, not how reliably a long-running stream will stay online. Validate your selected output path and separately test process and connection recovery.
