If a YouTube video looks blurry in VLC over a 4G hotspot, first check YouTube’s selected playback quality; if it keeps stopping, investigate the connection and buffering instead. VLC’s Network caching setting can soften some interruptions, but it cannot increase bandwidth or sharpen a low-resolution stream. There is no single best resolution or cache value for every Indian hotspot—the right choice depends on the video, device, signal and available speed.
First identify the problem: blur, buffering, or both
- Blur with smooth playback: YouTube may have selected a lower resolution, or the original video may not have been uploaded at a higher quality. Check the player’s quality setting.
- Repeated pauses or long loading: the hotspot may not be delivering enough consistent throughput, or other devices may be using the connection. Test the same video in YouTube’s app or at youtube.com.
- Blur and buffering together: YouTube can lower quality in response to viewing conditions, while an unstable connection can also interrupt playback. Test quality and connection separately before changing VLC settings.
YouTube says it changes stream quality based on viewing conditions, including internet speed, player or screen size, the original upload and browser support. VLC’s cache and YouTube’s resolution selection are separate controls.
Choose YouTube quality to match the hotspot
In the YouTube app, open the video player’s Settings → Quality. Labels and available resolutions can vary by app version, video and device.

YouTube’s Android quality guidance notes that “Higher picture quality” uses more data, so videos may take longer to start or buffer more often. If a sharper image is your priority and the video plays steadily, use Advanced (if available) to try a higher resolution. If it stalls, step down or return to Auto.

The original upload sets an upper limit: selecting a higher resolution cannot add detail that the source video does not contain. A larger player or screen and browser support can also affect the available or selected quality.
Check whether the 4G hotspot is the limiting factor
Google YouTube Help recommends a connection speed of at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming. This is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular video will play in HD on every hotspot. Mobile throughput can vary with location, signal, congestion and plan conditions; the guidance does not identify a best Indian carrier or plan.

- Play the same video in YouTube’s own app or at youtube.com, and compare it with VLC. If the issue occurs only in VLC, focus on VLC or how that stream is being played.
- If possible, compare the hotspot with another connection. YouTube recommends checking whether other videos play and testing another internet connection when troubleshooting.
- Reduce other devices’ use of the hotspot, then retry. YouTube specifically recommends minimizing other devices connected to the network.
- If the problem follows the hotspot across apps, check signal and coverage where you are using it, and review any plan conditions that could affect service. This is a diagnostic inference, not a finding about a particular carrier.
Adjust VLC for Android’s Network caching only for interruptions
VideoLAN documents Network caching under VLC for Android’s Advanced settings. The setting controls how much network media VLC buffers, in milliseconds, for software decoding. A larger cache can reduce buffering on a slow connection, but it adds waiting time before playback; seeking may also feel less immediate. It does not raise the stream resolution or create more bandwidth.

- Change the value only if playback is interrupted despite checking the YouTube quality and connection. Increase it in small increments, testing the same stream after each change.
- If startup or seeking becomes too slow, reduce the value or clear it to restore the default. VideoLAN does not give one universally best number for every network and device.
VideoLAN also documents frame skip as a performance option, but warns that it lowers video quality. Since this problem is already low picture quality, frame skip is not a good first fix.

When YouTube’s app or browser is the better test
VideoLAN says VLC for Android supports network-stream formats including HLS and DASH. That confirms format support; it does not guarantee that every YouTube URL will work in VLC or that VLC will behave like YouTube’s adaptive player. For diagnosis, YouTube recommends its app or youtube.com. Compare the same video there before treating VLC as the source of the problem.
