If audio and video are misaligned in a YouTube live stream playing in VLC, correct their relative timing in VLC: press J if the audio comes before the matching picture, or K if it comes after. VLC’s Windows FAQ documents these shortcuts in 50 ms steps. If the audio and picture remain aligned with each other but the event itself is late, that is live-stream delay—not an audio-sync problem.
First identify which kind of delay you have
Watch a speaker’s mouth, or listen for a sound with a visible cause. Check whether the sound happens before or after the matching action.

YouTube notes that network congestion and other factors can delay live programming, even with a good network. That is different from a mismatch between sound and picture. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot streaming & video issues.

Correct audio-video sync with VLC’s delay controls
Use the J and K shortcuts
- Start the YouTube live stream in VLC and keep playback running.
- If audio is ahead of the image, press J. If audio is behind the image, press K.
- After each press, check a clear speech or action cue. Repeat in the appropriate direction until the sound and picture line up.
VideoLAN’s Windows FAQ says these keys adjust audio delay in 50 ms steps. The instruction is based on whether audio is ahead or behind, rather than on a universal positive or negative value. VideoLAN VLC User Documentation: Windows FAQ.

Enter an offset in Track Synchronization
On the documented VLC desktop 3.0 interface, open Tools > Track Synchronization during playback and enter an audio-track synchronization offset. Make a small adjustment, check the result, and refine it as needed; do not assume that one signed value will correct every case. VLC 3.0 desktop guide: Adjustments and Effects.
Menu layouts, shortcuts, and settings can vary by operating system, VLC version, or customized controls. If the documented menu or keys do not match your VLC, consult the controls for your version rather than guessing at a shortcut.

If the whole YouTube live stream is late or keeps buffering
When speech and picture stay synchronized but the event is behind real time, changing VLC’s audio offset will not make the broadcast itself happen sooner. For buffering or playback interruptions, YouTube recommends trying a different connection, manually adjusting quality when possible, and comparing playback on another device. These steps can help distinguish a network or device issue from a VLC-specific one.
YouTube also documents a Broadcast Delay selector in its TV app: Default aims to minimize playback interruptions, while Decrease reduces live delay with some risk of interruptions. This is a YouTube TV app control, not a VLC setting. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot streaming & video issues.

If the audio output itself sounds abnormal
If sound is distorted, missing, or otherwise abnormal—not simply early or late—test a different audio output module in VLC. VideoLAN’s Windows FAQ recommends saving the change and restarting VLC for audio-output anomalies. This is a troubleshooting possibility, not a guaranteed fix for live-stream synchronization.
